Yes, that bongo solo is a lot of fun, and it could totally be looped two or three times! I also enjoyed the power and contrast of the brass and organ sections.

''Apache' by The Incredible Bongo Band was the seed that started the BBoy Breakdance & Hip-Hop revolution in NY in the late 70's

This is a breakdance anthem. You could not escape from hearing this song in every hiphop jam in the 80s and 90s.

It sounds to me like that song "jump on it". Well, I look it up and see that all of these years I was listening to Apache only by the Sugar Hill Gang. Wow. I did not know this song had such a life.

For Amy's "covers" series may I suggest Big Mama Thortons original recording of "Hound Dog" ( though she didn't write it ) and then Elvis Presley's version which came out a few year later.

If you want to see a song being transformed, try the original 1937 Robert Johnson version of "Crossroads" (or "Cross Road Blues"), and then the live version on the Cream's 1966 album Wheels Of Fire. You will also see what Eric Clapton was known for earlier in his career.

They have chucked everything at it haven't they---including the kitchen sink. Sometimes simple is best. Not as good as The Shadows IMO.

The whole album is brilliant. It's basically a group of very talented and prolific studio musicians, who are simply having fun on a record. People should watch the documentary Sample This, which covers the creation of the band, and this song's transition into the rise of hip hop and beat looping. There is one moment in this recording, however, where there is a poor punch-in. My recording engineer ears can never unhear it.

Played keyboards in an instrumental band for some time. Played a lot of organ on surf and blues music. Always been a fan of progressive bands like Yes and ELP that use a lot of organ.

‘Apache drop out’ is an incredible rewrite of two songs - and might be an introduction to Captain Beefheart.

There are two drum breaks used heavily in hip-hop pre 2000: The Amen Break (from the b side Amen Brother) and the Apache Break. The Amen Break is a pretty common sample to use even today. It's a shame the Amen Break has fallen out of fashion.

I prefer the Shadows version because funk just isn't really my thing but I have to give them credit for radically transforming it. A lot of covers try to too closely mimic the original making them a bit pointless.

A fine album although I prefer 'let there be drum' (another cover). If you can get hold of the Grandmaster Flash remix version - it will give you a good insight into how this track is so revered in the hip-hop style. To b e fair - your reading to much into this. It's just a record producer trying to make MONEY.

While happenstance influences everything I wonder if 'Apache' isn't contributing more to its success than you give it credit for. If you ever see pictures of top supermodels without make up you will see they have peculiar neutrality to their beauty. Their faces are very symmetric and well proportioned but they are a blank canvas on which the make up artist can portray any style whatsoever with equal success. So I wonder if Apache's melody is such a 'blank canvas'; able to support decoration any musical style that performers choose.

Drugs, in the 70's there were plenty of bands who did breaks, it was for their 12 inch singles. Supposedly George Harrison participated on this song. Almost all pop bands in the late 70's had dance remixes. There was a whole culture going on. You don't believe me? Google John Belushi in SNL's Samurai Night Fever.

I strongly encourage you to take a pass at “I don’t like Mondays” by the Boomtown Rats. I think you’ll really enjoy the composition, particularly given that, despite being a pop song (from 40 years ago), it’s piano driven, with string and percussion accompaniment. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jLakqJiHmNGshIE.html

The only good cover of this song is by Jørgen Ingmann, also recorded in 1960. His tone and his style of guitar is unmatched. I wish you would listen to that version as well, although you're probably done reacting to covers of this song.
