The practice of keeping the light going through the night and storms has gone on for thousands of years. Lighthouses have been an essential part of navigating coastal waters since many of the first ships set sail. From the Pharos of Alexandria, a wonder of the ancient world, to the Thridarangar Lighthouse, one of the most isolated lighthouses in the world: their abundance is matched with the necessity of their duty. They light the way into harbors and ensure sailors are aware of hazards they might come across. Without a proper lighthouse system, there's no telling the human and economic costs that could have befallen the civilizations of the world. In this episode, we're going to explore the beginnings of lighthouses, and how they were improved to the point of obsolescence.
