The incredible six year journey of an ex-paratrooper and his dog

When Chris Lewis set off on a fundraising walk in 2017, he couldn’t have imagined it would take him six years to complete - nor just how much it would change his life.
The former paratrooper has traced almost every twist and turn of the UK coastline - at one point spending Covid lockdown on an uninhabited Scottish island.
The whole time, he’s been supported by the kindness of strangers and online followers, thousands of them.

Its amazing how animals are the ones you gravitate too, I'm a life long major clinical depression unfortunate, war veteran and, can do person. Luckily I have always had a lot of fight in me that again & again saved me. I feel for the types who give up. A great story from a man who obviously has the fight in him too, good luck Sir.

I don’t think people give up .I think they haven’t anymore strength left to continue. You have obviously have to deal with a lot and keep managing to have the strength to continue and I hope you always manage to do so .I wish you all the best.

Good on you brother, I left the military after 6 years service and by god did I struggle, I couldn't cope with things and adapt to normal life, became depressed and so lost and it was SSAFA that showed me support until earlier this year I returned back home to the military and started serving again. Can gladly now say I feel how I should be and couldn't be more greatful the support military charities provide as well.

I was lucky enough to be a neighbour of Chris in Swansea; despite his obvious psychological struggles, his character and deep-down determination shone through. Must admit to shedding a few tears watching this, not helped by the use of The Foo's 'Times Like These'!!

See those Scottish midgies? Individually they're tiny and yet each bite feels like a spark has landed on your skin, it's painful. I remember up on the Whisky Trail on Speyside kind of, where I used to live, I took my son camping and when I got up in the morning and leaned out if the tent to boil some water, a hoard of them descended on my bare arms, it was like his tent except possibly worse as they were hungry and seriously, you could hardly see my arms through the layer of midgies. Obviously I had on long sleeves when the kettle boiled and I made the tea. They eat me alive, some people don't seem to get bitten nearly as much. I really admire him for doing this, especially all those miles and miles in Scotland and its islands.

I was really struck by the enormity of the challenge Chris undertook and the level of humility he has tackled it with when I first learned of him. He is a real inspiration for anyone who has struggled with any degree of mental health. Can somebody please put him touch with 'Speakers from the Edge' which will allow him to tour round the UK and give talks on his amazing achievement. The real beauty of this is the level of generosity displayed by the public as he made his way. There is a something about seeing a person who is potentially vulnerable that brings out the best in some people. But being vulnerable is not about an individual displaying weakness, it is about that individual allowing another to express their generosity towards them. That is the Spirit of Humanity. God bless you, Chris and your beautiful family! You have touched more lives than you could possibly have imagined.

What a story, good on you chap, that one way of healing but for many of these soldiers a long lasting peace must be confronting what they have done and seen in these wars that is haunting them and share the stories to expose those who sent you in these wars and abandon you when you are broken, the goal:for future generations of soldiers to refuse to go and fight other people who have done nothing to their country, people whose only fault is to have ressources in their country.peace

as a nation we should crowd fund vulnerable teens who are at risk of a life of crime to continually circle the coast line picking litter to help create a better cleaner world for future generations. local communities they visit could fund them and give them free camping space all whilst being promoted by local press at every location they visit.

i would love to know what reaction Chris & Co received if they were spotted making their way along the SW Hampshire beaches of sand & shingle between the mouths of Beaulieu & Lymington Rivers. As I understand it , the beach or shore between High Water mark & the actual sea level isn’t private property ( not withstanding MOD land & suchlike ) & one can’t be accused of trespass but there’s a pair of neighbours along this particular stretch- both ex working class & from the midlands whom aren’t at all keen on sightseers or plebs interrupting their peaceful & private world amongst opulence indoors & outside .Being a musician is a fabulous thing but in my estimation when compared to many whom have spent decades writing & performing masterpieces of wonder , inspiration & imagination but remained un recognised, unrewarded or completely disregarded whilst these guys’ batch of simple pop rock earned them & their companies millions & they basically got money for nothing. So if Chris was detected & invited in for tea or soup I retract my spiteful comment completely but if he was chastised or threatened with the dogs I rest my case & mourn the loss of easy access to such a magical stretch of coast previously enjoyed by many for generations 😮👍
