Hello and welcome to another video! Today, we’ll discuss the widely known rail line in New Jersey that is no longer operative and has created many memories for people who lived on this line. Ladies and gentlemen, me and Pensyfan19 welcome you to... The Incredible Story of the Boonton Branch! The Boonton Branch was first a major freight line until passenger (later commuter) service came along as the dominant kind of rail traffic. Built in 1870, it was mainly a freight bypass for the Morris & Essex RR and it lasted until 2002 when the last NJ Transit Boonton Line train made its trip before it was ripped up in favor of the new Montclair Connection. Anyway, enough yapping. Enjoy the video!

When they built the Secaucus Junction station back in the early 2000s, it made the Boonton Branch line completely obsolete. I hope they at least make it into a nice bike trail.

Great video! It always makes you wonder what the railroads in the area would be like today if the segment wasn’t closed. Also, i believe the section between Hoboken and Bay Street (the line that closed in 2002) was part of the former Erie Greenwood Lake line.

Bay St. to Hoboken was the DL&W Montclair branch. The Greenwood Lake passed through Arlington, North Newark, Rowe St.(Bloomfield), Benson St.(Glen Ridge), etc.😎🚂🚃🚃🚃✝

@@garykuipers2696 Im aware of that. I was just pointing it out since those are two different lines separate from the DL&W Boonton Branch

@@garykuipers2696 the montclair branch from my knowledge has by far the largest amount of abandoned properties (station buildings, platforms, crossings, etc.) the benson street stop is only a few minutes walk from the bay street station.

The Montclair Connection was between the former Erie Greenwood Lake Branch and the former Lackawanna Montclair Branch. Most of the Boonton Line is still in service today. The pnly part not in existence any more is the part from South Paterson to Totowa. The part from just west of the Bergen Tunnels to South Paterson is called the Main Line. The part from the Mountain View junction with the former Erie Greenwood Lake Branch is called The Montclair Boonton Line The abandoned lines in the NJ meadows are the former Erie Greenwood Lake Branch and Newark Branch, never anything called part of the Boonton Line. Just timetable west of South Paterson, the former Erie Newark Branch joins the Boonton Line. The Erie consolidated its Newark Branch with the Lackawanna to where the Boonton Line turned north to go by Paterson. The former Newark Branch line was elevated over two main streets to allow trains from the Boonton Line to connect with the former Erie Main Line just east of the Paterson station. The Boonton Line Paterson station was several miles away from downtown Paterson.

Have to learn some pronunciations my friend. The "N" in Boonton is mainly silent. Like "Boo-ton" Not Boon-ton. Totowa is pronounced as one word, Totowa. Not "Toe Toe Wah. Also. That's not the Montville station.

West of Hudson, pronounced boonton correctly, pennsyfan didn't. Considering pf19 is not from the area at all I am not surprised he doesn't now. Later he did mispronounce it. Oh well.
