The Nissan 300ZX is one of the most beloved sports cars to come out of Japan. We didn’t get the Nissan Skyline GTR in the USA, but we did get the next best thing. A sleek, stylishing, twin turbo powered ringer packed with a ton of features that were ahead of its time. It was one of the first cars designed on a Supercomputer running CAD software! Not only were the looks advanced, under that pretty exterior it had the goods to back it up. With electronic 4 wheel steering, Variable Timing control (VTC), headlights that were the first of its kind, the Fairlady Z set the stage for the future of modern sports cars. Today we are going to look at Nissan’s flagship car in the States and some of the tech used in the Z that give it some current day character “flaws”
Huge thanks to everyone who submitted a video!
Special thanks to @mikemehnert for bringing out his Z32!

This is So right. And it's sad. FJ20 - no replacement SR20 - no replacement CA18 - no replacement RB2x - no replacement VQ35 - a somewhat failed design VH45 - sadly did not make it in a coupe... Alsow no nice coupes made anymore :( No 180/200 silvias No real Z-car (compared to the z32 all what came after was a disappointment) Do you guys still remember the old slogan? "Nissan - enjoy the ride“ that was the time of the old 240zx cars...

In 1993 I was a Nissan tech fresh out of high school when these cars came out and I fell in love the first time I saw one. I drove tons of the non-turbo 300 and they were pretty much better in every way as a daily driver but the Twin-Turbo Twin Intercooled versions had lots of growing pains and I remember them having lots of clutch issues with the TT cars. Tuning wasn’t as common as it is now so to find a modified one back then was unusual but I had a customer that had done fuel, intercooler, exhaust and turbo upgrades and a ‘chip’ that had to be soldered into the ecu to make it all work. He had a binder of receipts from a shop in Florida that did the build. He was a pilot and an adrenaline junkie and we struck up a friendship after a giggle-inducing high speed drive to demo a vibration that no one else was able to fix until I discovered a bad driveshaft carrier bushing/bearing assembly was the culprit and got the driveshaft replaced under factory warranty. After that, he would only bring the car to me for service or repair. He was always telling me how he could stomp on a new Vette or Mustang (I had a new 5.0 then) and he beat the absolute crap out of that car and was outrunning muscle cars and Gixers on the streets just about every weekend. We were pretty relaxed on warranty work in those days but I remember an adjuster denying a repair after he had smoked the rear end for the second time due to the abuse and modifications and after an investigation the VIN was entered into a ‘do not honor’ status on his warranty in the Nissan service database. He was loaded and had a best friend that was an attorney on speed dial so he got away with more than the average Joe and always had a riveting story to tell about some adventure he had gotten himself into in the car. The best story he had was spending the night in jail after being chased down racing a CBR in the Everglades by a highway patrol officer in a Pursuit Mustang and had the 184mph ticket in the service book to prove it! The case was thrown out when the officer ‘could not recollect’ if it was his 300zx or another 300zx so the judge had no choice but to drop the charges. 😎👍

Lemme tell ya where the REAL PROBLEM is... 🤨 I've always wanted one of these since I was a teenager... I could still recall callin' up Nissan like 20+ years ago, and chewin' them out for discontinuing the 300ZX. The car was FANTASTIC, and NOTHING is wrong with it. I was hopin' they would mass-manufacture it make as as many of them as there were Corollas. Like a MILLION of these vehicles a year. They just coldly said to me, that the 350z will be 'replacing' it. I told 'em to just go straight to HELL. I shure gave 'em an EARFUL!!! 😡

I have a 92 ZX TT and absolutely love it and I'll tell you the problems: The T bar leaks The annoying clicking from the AC pod Poor placement of seat adjustment lever But for a car that is 20yrs old, it's simply a fantastic drive with stunning performance. Really easy to stick the back end out and control it.

@@Isaacfrmdaa For a 17-year-old, your top priorities should be safety and reliability. You are young and dumb, so you need a car that you can beat on and crash several times and still walk away in one piece. My suggestion? Toyota Camry. Don't be stupid like I was as a teen, and buy more car than you can handle. Cause you *will* damage it from lack of maintenance, and you *will* smack it against curbs, poles, and random trees. If you ignore my advice and get something fast and/or nice, don't come crying to me when you eventually kill the car and/or yourself.
@willspicer3190

@Isaacfrmdaa if you can't fix it yourself when it breaks then you better have a healthy budget to pay a mechanic. Other then that I don't see why not. Other then teenagers don't usually have the discipline to run a performance car without wrecking it lol

Oh god, no. I was coming here to say the problem was that when it came out, it started looking old and dated less than a year after it was released. I can't think of another car that managed this. The design was the exact opposite of timeless, it's time was about 6 months, then it expired. This was a topic of conversation among friends, everybody liked the way it looked when it came out, 2 years later, nobody did. It's sales died because of the styling, not despite it. Their sales went from 22K the first year it was out, to 15K year two, less than 10K each of the next two years, then less than 5K for per year. You may like it for it's "retro" styling now, but its looks aged like milk in the 90s. The new Z, to me at least, is exactly the same, first few pictures were cool, but as time passes and the more I see it, it just doesn't look that good anymore, and they haven't even started making it yet. I'd expect the same sales path.

[STORY TIME] Thank you for this video. I grew up a poor immigrant kid in southern Ontario, Canada in the 90s, but in my neighborhood, a friend’s dad had a spotless 300ZX in red w/the all black interior. I think it was the first time I actually got to touch/sit in a wedge-shaped sports car. It was such a special sight. Nobody in my complex was jealous or hateful, even another neighbor who had a Taurus SHO would compliment the Nissan. We were all just happy to see it every time it drove by, knowing it is something unique in our little pocket of town, in a sea of Neons, Jettas and Cavaliers. As an adult, every time I see one, I’m in time-machine mode. Sorry for the lengthy post, and shout out to everyone with childhood memories of cool cars!!😊

Nissan and Mitsubishi should’ve never listen to Renault. NEVER. EVER. Collaborate with the French when it comes to cars. Vans yes BUT NEVER CARS, EVER. Citroen screwed over Maserati when the cash-strapped Italian firm needed assistance. Citroen saved them but the cars were terrible and the BiTurbo damaged their reputation. Renault milked Nissan and Mitsubishi and with the exception of GTR and 350/70Z made the most boring AF cars ever to exist, and dangerous electrics.

The 300ZX TT was a force to be reckoned with when it debuted. By 1994 it was noticeably slower in a straight line than the Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 and Toyota Supra TT but was more fun to dive than either. I had a 1991 300ZX Twin Turbo and a 1998 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 back in the early 2000s. Driven back to back it's obvious the Mitsubishi is the faster car, at the track I ran 13.7-14.0@99-102mph in the Z and in the VR-4 I ran 13.3-13.5@101-103mph. Despite being a bit slower, the Z was still the most versatile and fun to drive. I daily drove the VR-4 due to its AWD and took the Z when it was nice out.

I owned a 300 ZX twin turbo, and loved it. It was the best car I've ever owned. I've owned other sports cars including a couple Porsches, and the 300ZX was the most reliable and most fun in 45 years of driving. I put over a 100K miles on it, and all I ever needed to do was regular maintenance, except perhaps replacing the rear Z-rated tire$ about twice a year.

One flake of snow on the ground and he couldn’t get to work. If it snowed during the day... when he managed to fishtail his way home... the neighborhood would watch with consternation as he spent 5 minutes trying to get up his 15 foot long driveway with a slight grade. His teenage sons behind him pushing him up the drive. Needless to say... by Spring... the car was gone. Thanks for the laughs and memories Brad.

I have a 1991 300zx TT that I bought in 2007. I was tired of dealing with the old tech and issues, so I did the forbidden LS swap. It's now a 1100whp, ethanol burning, 6.2l, LS3 with rear mounted twin turbos, making around 1300hp crank. To my knowledge, it's the most powerful LS swapped street legal Z32 in Zword, as of 04/2020. Some history: I bought a 1990 Z32 NA back in 2001. I always loved the way these cars looks. The timing belt broke, and the engine had to be replaced. I then bought a 1991 Z32 TT in 2007. It was already moded, and made 550whp. It was a fun car until the gaskets started to go, along with many other problems over the year, but hey, it's an old car. I decided to do a swap, and decided on the LS3. The LS3 aluminum block is nearly 200lbs lighter than the VG30DETT, and takes up less room in the bay. This means you can work on the engine, and not have to remove it every time something goes wrong. Hit me up on social media ( XTZTwinTurbo ) and check out the vids and pics. #XTZTwinTurbo

Back in the day, Nissan had a very popular TV commercial for the new 300ZX TT where it double flashed the headlights and passed the camera. That was the essence of cool because turning on the high beams back then was more of a slow 'now they go on...now they go off' which required you to click a plastic stalk past a plastic nub thing, or maybe a foot button. There was no "flashing" of headlights. So flashing the headlights was super cool back then and my whole family wanted to know how they did that. And it drew attention to the super cool new headlights. So good move in that commercial. I still love the 300 ZX Twin Turbo. So cool.

When you get a 300zx just expect all the cool tech to be broken.
@SSChambers1

Not entirely true. I agree that most of the Z32's were bought up by a younger demographic that didn't maintain them, abused them, and tastelessly modded them. However, properly maintained Z32's still have all the great tech that works. My '90 NA, which was one of the first ones sold in Ohio, is pristine and everything works 100%; even the original digital clock which is known to stop working. The engine runs strong, VTC still works, all electronics still function, T-tops don't leak, and hell even the driver's side key hole still illuminates green. Power seats and mirrors still operate. It's as solid as it was 30 years ago but not without proper maintenance. I'll never sell her and in fact she may get a TT sister if I find one in similar condition.

I bought an 86 300zx 2+2 with a 5 speed a couple years ago. I grew up in them, my dad had one and my grandmother and grandfather had one and I loved them. It had been parked 9 years without being touched when I got it, I revived it, got it running and driving again but literally the day I first drove it was on to someone else's trailer. It had spent a lot of time on the Texas east coast and it was rusted far worse than the PO had led me to believe, to the point that I couldn't even jack the car up, the wheels would just stay on the ground. I had to let it go, I've never worked with that much rust before.

That is basicly a US thing only. Nissan even dropped the basic engines for their coupes and swapped in the ka24 Traktor engine... Just to make it simple enough to get it serviced reliable in the US... I guess it's cause most American engine builders have no experience working on more complex engines. Why should they, LS (and other pushrod v8) engines are dirt cheap in the US and basicly everyone understands them and knows how to work on them. They are way simpler in design compared to more modern engines (like mid 80s🤣) they are however not without their own problems....

A lot of ppl love to hate on Nissan. A 90 300zxTT was the first car I ever owned when I was 18yrs old. Been a fan of Nissan every since. I even had a 94 Maxima SE 3rd gen. It has an LSD front diff too. It was also a fun car especially for a front wheel drive sport car. I dropped it 2 inch full custom exhaust and that thing got so many compliments because not a lot of ppl mod those. It had the same engine as the 300zx but was the front wheel drive version. It of course lacked that forced induction those TT made all the difference. My friends dad has a bad ass 700hp+ 300zx. He also had an 04 G35 Coupe which was brand new at the time. He had it for a month before he threw an Eaton Supercharger on it. That's when I started to fall in love with those Gs. I got a G35x, it's not a coupe but it's still fun. Nissan all the way...

@@mamoochie7392 To be so similar, the valuations of the Mitsubishi's at all levels are lower than the Nissan's. Plus, the interior of the Nissan, particularly the leather of the seats, has held up much better than that of the Mitsu's, making it harder to find Mitsu's in passable shape after almost thirty years. Despite that, they are still worth less, indicating they are less desirable. Personally, I appreciate the exterior styling and performance of the Mitsu's, but when it came to buying, I went with my long time favorite, the 300ZX TT.

Second gen 3000gt Vr-4’s did 0-60 in 4.7-4.9 seconds and the 1/4 mile in low 13’s and the Dodge Stealth Twin Turbos being lighter have been able to do 12’9s completely STOCK. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rKx1jM6YtMDIc2g.html ^watch this stock 1999 3000gt Vr-4 run a 13’2.
