The Max Headroom incident looks far creepier than adult content being briefly shown on TV. I do understand the inappropriateness of something like that happening on a kids channel, but when it happens during the Super Bowl, it sounds hilarious. There was a similar incident that happened on the Sesame Street KZfaq Channel where someone hacked it and uploaded adult content on it.
@Leon-oo4ei
@Leon-oo4ei Жыл бұрын
*looks* creepier because there's a lack of historical context to the max headroom incident. the character of max is exactly like that (minus the bottocks): an annoying head that interrupts the TV signal to say something sarcastic and then disappear. for the time, nobody was spooked because max headroom was a popular character (even if his fame bordered on infamy)

I've never been a witness for this kind of incidents. However, I think I can say I was a witness to a "reverse" incident. Mexico City, September 19th. A huge earthquake nearly destroyed the city, including the oldest and most important broadcaster, Televisa. For about 5 hours, 4 TV channels went off the air, only for one of their channels to go back on air to show the gruesome event. Channel 5, traditionally a kids channel, was the most affected since its huge transmitter antenna was now part of the pavement, but that didn't deter the broadcaster to put the channel back and give the programming many frightened kids wanted to watch. And, so it happened, they tied to put it back around 5 PM with a scheduled re-re-rerun of Shazam!... which failed miserably. The signal was weak, even with a good antenna that usually picked the same channel with good quality the day before, it was like moving the rabbit ears constantly. Colors going off, distorted picture and off center, but the creepiest part was the audio, completetly distorted, noisy and unintelligible. When the episode was done, after the credits rolled, the channel went back off air. This is effectively lost media, it is very unlikely that the broadcaster being in such situation recorded this attempt to bring back the channel and there are even less chances for someone rich enough to have a VCR at that time who had recorded this broadcast. 2007 and no one having this in an old hard drive, a VHS or even a DVD-R? Laughable! I'm sure it will surface sooner or later. Someone in Mexico in 1985 recording a meaningless broadcast during a huge natural disaster and keeping the recording for years (maybe not even weeks) instead of using the tape again to save a lot of money on a new blank one to record a soccer game? Chances equal to 0. Impossible, and I do mean it in the pure sense of the word, impossible. Now, that's what I call lost media I'm not joking, if this is ever found, analog terror could change forever.

Searched the LMW, nothing I’d be absolutely shocked it someone actually had footage from it, the reason I have never taken it to LMW (besides disliking most of what is considered “lost media” and stuff around it) is because I’m positive 1000% that no one held to it if, if, IF someone recorded it. That someone had to be extremely rich (not kidding) to had a VCR and never tape over anything and be very smart to record and keep such a thing, that’s how things were in Mexico back then.

I saw a signal broadcast in Costa Rica around 2011 - 2012. I’ve never seen anyone talk about this, but I know it happened because my mom saw it too. Basically it happened on some dubbed free movie channel, where it stopped and for about 2 seconds was a line of 3 buff men in thongs made of jingle bells swinging their “packages” around, then immediately clipped back to the program. I would’ve thought this was a fever dream if my mom had not been just as shocked as me and obviously remember it. It happened very late at night around 2 -3 am, so I don’t think many people saw it, if any. I wouldn’t be surprised if me and my mom were the only two to see this regional movie channel program hack

This is such an interesting situation because I was one of the witnesses! I was born in 2006, 17 now, so I must've been 1. My mom, understandably, flipped out and contacted the cable company only for them to respond with a basic "Monitor what your kids do." Despite that clearly not being what happened, haha. I thought this was a small thing but to see a lot of people being affected by this is really interesting! On a less positive note, I do feel bad for children that were older than me, since I didn't remember this at all (as a 1 year old wouldn't). But I'm sure someone who was 5 - 6 would've, hope it didn't affect anybody too hard..

hey, everyone... in all seriousness, let's take a moment to hold compassion for the kids who probably ended up with some form of PTSD from this. it might seem funny on the surface level, but I know the inescapable, lifelong effects of childhood pornography exposure firsthand, and it's... haunting. truly and deeeply harrowing beyond description. I can't imagine many parents handling something like this very well, either, which could have been so damaging in an already incredibly volatile and fragile situation. not being able to understand or process something you see on a screen is one thing, but having a parent freak out and scream in panic and fury is a whole other layer. so my heart seriously goes out to the kids affected by this. I hope many of them got the help they needed and were able to recover.

Yeah radio is even more difficult to document than TV. It's crazy how many slip ups and unexpected moments happen that are never heard of again. Plus there's no rewinding and studios don't always record/save their programs and replace them with new ones. So finding a particular event can be literally impossible. Stations can get fined by the FCC for things like swearing so breeches are shut down asap. It's possible they have master copies but they won't just hand them over to Joe shmoe for ‘historical purposes’.

And it went fast, too, before it went silent for a half an hour and they got someone up there to fix the mess. It's what I like about unplanned local things like this, though-- they're transient things that happened and shaped our experience, and afterwards when they likely remain intangible, we will always have the stories to tell. They're unique and special. Maybe a little odd and mysterious, a little spooky, but uniquely yours.

I once commented to a friend that I wonder how many people had witnessed a broadcast hijacking and not realized it because they thought whatever was happening was part of the movie or show. Imagine two friends watching a movie at one of their homes… “Hey, why’d they cut out the chalkboard scene?” “The what?” “I was watching this on TV one night and it cut to a guy drawing sheep on a chalkboard and yodeling.” “Wait, was this around 2019? Back when you were living in Ohio?” “Yeah! How’d you know?” “I read about that hijacking! You know, they never did catch whoever did that!” (Note: I made this example up. As far as I know a hijacking like I described hasn’t actually happened)

If I hijacked a TV network, I'd do something crazy but fairly harmless, like Rick Roll people watching the news or interrupt a season finale of a super popular show by putting on The Room or put an actual nature documentary on Animal Planet or something. What gets me that I remember as a kid who had Comcast was why they offered adult material for free. One day I was trying to find a niche cartoon show that I had seen live once and wondered if Comcast had it. As I was clicking around through the tabs in the main menu, I came across an adult section, was curious by the titles, and clicked on to see some inappropriate stuff. I freaked out and closed out of everything and turned off the tv. You'd think that kind of stuff would be behind a password paywall like thing or something. I went to my parents and told them what I came across and they were horrified. Needless to say I was forbidden to go searching for stuff on my own unless they'd do it for me if what I was wanting to find was past my usual tabs I'd go through normally.

great video on this topic. I remember hearing multiple incidents and such and I think that it kinda makes sense due to the time period. During that time many cable operators and cable headends were transitioning from analog to digital.. as well as many signals up in the sky that were now starting to be broadcast full-on digital via c-band. I highly believe that the handy mandy incident and the superbowl were only seen in analog cable as someone would need to had either changed something by mistake or had done a malicious act and changed the digital to analog feed. The lilo and stitch incident may had been a glitch with the DVR from dish, especially if it was raining or something changed. This is because I remember reading online of an issue where a recording might change channel halfway when it looses signal, but not sure. It's also very likely that just that family saw such recording and no one else did (unlike the comcast incidents where more people saw it at the same time).

@@user-fe8gx3ie5v The thing is how many people would have been recording something off Disney Jr? I'm sure some parents would have but overall I don't think it would have been many people, Especially since I think the channel was ad free (giving you less of a need to record). Then with DVRs, I actually think it's easier to lose content from the DVR era over the VHS era. When we were done with recordings, we almost always deleted them and then eventually the cable box would have been returned to the cable company anyway. And old VHS could get lost somewhere for awhile and this save the recording on it. Also it's not like this was nationwide, it sounds like it just happened in one county so I think that would make it harder to find. Finally if a parent had been recording that, I'm sure they would have immediately deleted it after they learned what happened.

I remember years ago, I was watching Doc Mcstuffins one day, and it was the episode with the red and blue flippy toys that were struggling to flip or something along those lines. Anyways…. When one of the two toys started talking, Disney Junior randomly bleeped out one of their words. It was like, “But if Bernardo can’t flip, something *BEEEEEP* be wrong!” Also, one time, I put on PBS Kids for background noise while I was cleaning my room. An episode of Peg + Cat came on and it got like, 10 seconds into the intro and the whole channel locked up. Then it pixelated and jumped to an episode of Thomas the Tank engine, except it was halfway through the episode. It stayed on Thomas for a solid 15 minutes before freezing and pixelating and jumping back to Peg + Cat.

reminds me of this extremely weird fucked up sesame street master clip that was on youtube. it was this scene with elmo and rosita and elmo keeps saying "hot! hot!" and rosita thinks elmo got burnt. the catch is, during the beginning there's a ~1khz sine tone that plays over the audio and lasts for a good few seconds (like 5 seconds or so) and then it's normal for the rest of the thing. i think it's gone off youtube but i 100% remember this being a thing. and by master clip i mean it was from the official sesame street channel and it was a really old upload too, like 2012 or something around that time frame. haven't been able to find it since, but i know for a fact this wasn't a YTP or an edit. i'm thinking it's just a weird error of some sort that they had on the master videotape (considering this skit was probably from the early 90s)

Now I'm not from Lincroft, but I am from New Jersey. I would've been 4 years old at the time of the broadcast. Realistically, my dad would've just left for work, my mom would've been in the kitchen doing laundry and watching Regis and Kelly, and I would've been in the living room likely watching Playhouse Disney block. While I don't remember anything unusual, there is a chance, a small chance, but a chance, that those cursed images are buried somewhere deep down, inaccessible, in my subconscious, waiting to be found... i have a memory of something somewhat similar to this, just on a much less intense scale, and ive never been able to find any info on it at all. i was watching toon disney sometime during the afternoon in around 2007-2008, and during the commercials there was an ad for one of the girls gone wild videos (i remember the ad vividly and that it was about collage girls), it just came and went like any other ad, no glitching or anything to indicate it wasnt meant to be there. i called mom once i realized what i was looking at and she saw it too, she was freaking out trying to find the remote but it was pretty much over by the time she came and it was on to the next ad like nothing happened. she made me change the channel for a while in case it happened again, but acknowledged that it didnt seem like disney meant to air that and i wasnt banned from toon disney or anything. me and mom theorized that some kind of mix up happened with the broadcast and they played the ad on the wrong channel. i honestly have no idea how plausible that is, but it was just way too... *normal* to be a hijacking, youd think if they were gonna go through all the trouble and legal risk of hijacking a broadcast to show sexual content to kids they'd do something like the ones in this video, not something thats extremally tame and censored. i mean im not complaining that i didnt see surprise hardcore porn as a kid, but it just doesnt seem like what i saw was some malicious intentional thing they could trace back to one person and i would be really surprised if it was. cause like, what would be the point of that? i would love to see a recording of that commercial break, all the normal disney ads with a random ggw ad slapped in there.

It appeared the video wasn’t being scaled to the size of the box so the menu covered most of the screen, but I know I saw something that made me panic, close OnDemand, and turn off the TV. To interrupt a broadcast for such a small area is surprisingly easy if you have amateur radio knowledge, equipment and know where a transmitter is. It was either on Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, or the Disney Channel, although I'm certain that doesn't narrow it down too awful much, lol.

@@rosennacht7624 It was like a cartoon, yeah. I only saw a second of it before the broadcast went back to normal. It panned from one character to the other, and I think they were about to arm wrestle or something.

this isn't really a broadcast intrusion, but there was one time many years ago when nickelodeon was having some technical difficulties in australia. to make up for it, there was a spongebob marathon (i think it lasted all day iirc), and it would occasionally show a white screen with a picture of a scared spongebob with the text "we've got a problem!" next to him. i was only 7 when it happened, and it traumatised me 💀. i can't find any info on this incident on the internet, apart from a thread on the lost media wiki forums

I've lived in the area my entire life and this the first time I've heard of this happening. Lincroft is relatively small and home to the county college, I wonder if bored AV students could be to blame. They have a radio and TV program.

When I was a kid remember seeing a strange broadcast. It was late at night but probably no later the 10. The tv cuts to static before cutting to a strange darkly light pinkish alien environment. It looked like night but had pink light reflected off of fog. It zooms into a strange alien man pink slimy or wet skin. He standing next to a boiling cauldron and is speaking to the camera. I can’t remember what he said but his voice was corse and gravely. I remember him leaning into at the camera at some point and saying something like we’re coming. Scared me so much that I ran out the room. This was early 2000’s I was either in kindergarten, or first or second grade. I live in ct but have never met or heard another person talk about it. I’ve tried looking for it trying to see if anything fits what I remember but no. If anyone remembers or knows about it let me know.

The only weird tv things I had growing up in the 90s in England was the many times the tapes didn’t work and having the creepy girl and the clown doll shown until it was fixed or just had someone say sorry for the inconvenience and would just show something else or would have the presenters back on screen Always fun never knowing if your show would be played properly and seeing if tv presenters would mess up when they were on screen when they thought they were off air

I always hated Time Warner Cable. As a kid I ALWAYS had Disney Channel running on for background noise in my sleep, and very often the shows would just freeze and pixelate. It was so scary to see as a child. And it'd last for HOURS and I couldn't sleep without the TV on. Man this was locked in the deepest parts of my memories but seeing these comments unlocked it and I'm kinda sad. Also getting the "Weekly Broadcast Emergency Tests" done at 3am were scary as shit man 😭
@dreamieramune

oh god i'm like three months late but yeah the weekly eas tests were and still are horrifying. i kind of used to have the same thing as you but with my radio, so i always had to have it set to this one station to serve as background noise, but i stopped doing that a long time ago when i woke back up to a flash flood warning. it didn't even like blast my ears out or anything it was usually very quiet, it's just the fact that it interrupted something so relaxing to me i think. now whenever i listen to music while i try to sleep i get occasional irrational fears that the music is just gonna suddenly cut out into silence for a few seconds before an eas sound starts playing lol. creepy stuff

I remember browsing KZfaq sometime in 2012 and I ended up finding a porn video while looking for new uploads during a search. The weird thing was that it was shot just like a silent movie, complete with film scratches, intertitles, and clothing that would be accurate for the time period (1920s). The visuals didn't even look like it was just some cheap video effect either, it looked like it could have legitimately been made in that era. I watched the video for like a couple of minutes but got scared and turned it off when it was beginning to get explicit. I flagged it and it was taken down within a day. Believe it had like 400 views when I found it and it was about 9-10 minutes long in total.

Yeah, I don't know for sure, but I think it might've happened to me at one point too. You just never truly when you're casually watching TV, and then all of a sudden it becomes briefly interrupted by a suggestive commercial (though I do find it funny). While I'm sure finding said suggestive commercials will not be too difficult, it's very unlikely that the reasons of them happening will ever be found.

Way back in the day we had a large satellite dish with the wild feed channels, and I used to find all kinds of weird stuff on it but I can't remember too well other than the one time what was supposed to have been Saturday cartoons was what looked like a warning from another country, like a weather alert or something. Ayyy I recognize the commercial footage you used to replicate what the hack looked like. That's the condom commercial with Jason Griffith, and since his voice is so recognizable, it's a meme in the Sonic fandom, like the equivalent of Haley Joel Osment's "swabbing urethras" line in the Kingdom Hearts community
