In the eight steps of yoga each step is built on the last. The step before meditation ( Dhynam) is concentration(Dharana). Generally namas marana or japa with a certain degree of devotion developes concentration. Only when you have enough concentration can you hope to have a glimmer of meditation, and only when your meditation becomes perfect do you move into samadhi . Sadhana is not for the lazy ones !

Japam, wich means to chant the Holy Names of God.

What he means is that you can meditate anywhere and everywhere. You don't need a specific, normal, regular, or whatever everyone use to "meditate". Just like he mentions to master the body, which means you should like, what I do is I try to locate my body, like doing a body scan, and try to feel the feelings. It's the action that determines meditation, and not just "act".

Dirk Fischer So, Swami Vishwananda, when He says that we first need to master the Japam, He means that we need to chant the divine Name (in case of His devotees, it's OM Namo Narayanaya mantra, into which He also initiates us). So, we do 16 rounds of japa mala daily, meaning 16 x 108 beads (that many are on a mala - bead counter). Good? :) And that will calm the monkey mind...gradually and slowly.
