Kimin KIM Principal Dancer, The Mariinsky Ballet, Russia 러시아 마린스키 발레단 수석무용수 김기민
The world-renowned Mariinsky Ballet in Russia presents with pride its principal ballet dancers. There is one Asian male among this most prestigious company - Kimin KIM has now been with the Mariinsky for 7 years. In 2016, he became the first Korean male dancer to win Benois de La Danse for Ballerino - this is often called the Academy Award for the world of dance. Now only in his mid-twenties, KIM is in his prime as a dancer, giving stunning performances in Russia, America, Europe and beyond.
Kimin KIM built on his talent with an inspiring work ethic - his teachers had to stop him from practicing too much. Now standing at the very heights of international ballet, INNERview meets Kimin KIM to hear his story of sweat and tears behind those breathtakingly beautiful stages.

I wish you less injuries and more and more great roles in your future career as a principal ballet dancer. Fighting!

What an absolutely privilege to become acquainted with this young man. Came across his name while watching the list of 10 top performing men ballet dancers, he becoming #1 in 2012, and then principal Dancer in 2015. This interview revealed so much about his early years as a ballet student in Korea, moving on in his career to the world famous Mariinsky Ballet as a principal soloist in 2015. Underlining the entire interview was his humility and gratitude. Mahalo ArirangTV for showcasing this outstanding commitment.

Very nice young guy Bi-Lo great inspiration to Young promising male dancers instead of all these loudmouth football players nowadays that bored me to tears that's why all of a sudden I started to take an interest in ballet I got bored with Athletics for that very reason it had become boring. As of October, 2018, this interview is the latest, in-depth discussion with one of the international ballet world's most exciting male dancers, Kimin Kim. Tall, dark and handsome, he has been a principal dancer of the Mariinsky Ballet since 2015. He presents himself with a simple but polished formality, responding to his charming host, Ki Min-Jung, in Korean (with English subtitles), keeping the conversation moving along at quite a clip. Kim was initially taken on as an intern at the Mariinsky and made a soloist within only a year. Four years later, he became a principal dancer. At 26, the overall impression he makes is of a young man who is serious, intelligent, thoughtful and accessible. His polished demeanor belies his years. As a dancer he works ruthlessly hard work to achieve the results he achieves. Like legendary ballet dancers, Rudolf Nureyev and Diana Vishneva, Kim carries the discipline of ballet training into a realm where few dare to go. He claims his greatest satisfaction comes from the things he works hardest to master. In the interview, he speaks humorously about the extreme side of his work ethic. In middle school, the janitor finally gave him the key to the ballet studio because he realized that Kim was there early in the morning and late at night. Arriving between 6 and 7 a.m., he practiced for hours before his first class and stuck around long after the others had left, working late into the night. This approach to his work persisted at the Mariinsky, where he took to hiding his ballet slippers behind the toilet so that there would be no trace of the long hours he was keeping in the rehearsal studio. Kim talks about the burgeoning growth of ballet in South Korea in recent years, an art form relatively new to their culture. When on leave, Kim travels home at least once a year or, at the very least, every two years. When he is performing there, he has many more opportunities to see family and friends. He feels strongly about supporting Korean ballet. His brother Kiwan, is a dancer with the National Ballet, and the two grew up studying ballet together. His mother enrolled them at the local ballet academy in response to an article about ballet she read in a magazine. Girls laughed at them, but Kiwan's presence gave the youthful Kimin the confidence not to be intimidated. The two brothers are always in touch, exchanging videos two to three times a week, learning from one another and enjoying the camaraderie of siblings both engaged in a highly competitive art...When the Mariinsky traveled to Seoul seven years ago, he was completing his last year at the Korean National Arts University. He submitted videos to the Mariinsky in hopes of receiving an audition, and was invited to St. Petersburg to do so. He was so honored by their extending themselves to him, that he was exhilarated at the mere prospect of the opportunity. "Dumbstruck" when he got the news five days later that he had been accepted as an intern, his two Russian teachers, the married couple Vladimir Kim (no relation) and Margarita Kullik, traveled to Russia with him in order to help him make the transition to living full-time in St. Petersburg. (Upon arrival he did not even know the Russian alphabet.) Within a year, he was made a soloist, and within four years a principal dancer. The many new roles he took on during this time, as well as his hectic schedule, made it difficult for him to focus on learning Russian. Nevertheless, he forced himself to attend parties with members of the Mariinsky, even if it meant having to sit silently, listening, observing and absorbing all that he could. When he became a soloist, he did not aim to become a principal dancer, he simply gave his next immediate performance his entire focus. Thus, he arrived at his new position as a principal organically, by doing his best from one day to the next, repeatedly. His position was never an end in itself. It has now been seven years since he left home. Almost as much as he misses his family and friends, he misses Korean food, and seeks out Korean restaurants in Russia, no matter what the cost. He cooks Korean food at home but doubts he will ever match his mother's special touch in the kitchen. However, he confessed that the enjoyment of good Korean food is a "stress" reliever and, in general, considers adequate nutrition and plentiful sleep enormously important for a dancer. Kim affectionately claims that he has learned the most from Russian audiences because of the huge back log of previous performances they have attended dating back to the 1950's. Their suggestions to him have helped him improve as a performer. As a child, it was his dream to dance with the Mariinsky, and even now that it has come true, he manages to maintain a sense of wonder about his achievement. When returning to the Korean National Arts University to perform with its student artists, a young female dancer Kim was partnering, Soo-Bin Lee, said on camera that when Kim comes to dance at his alma mater, they are all touched by how kind and gentle he is in spite of the enormous leap in status he has attained on the world stage. He goes out of his way to answer questions that students pose, naturally adopting the role of a mentor. When speaking to male students, he attempts to relieve any fears they have that they will not be accepted on the world stage because they are Asian. This has not been Kim's experience. He demonstrates a highly evolved, elevated perception of life, claiming to believe in cause and effect and the importance of learning from both positive and negative experiences. At the same time he places an emphasis on leaving the past behind and living in the moment. As a male ballet dancer, he considers it his role first and foremost to elevate the ballerina. This is evident in the chemistry between him and Viktoria Tereshkina, his most frequent partner at the Mariinsky. He claims that he benefited enormously by being paired up with her early on. By proximity, he absorbed her confidence, verve and unbridled sense of joy. Before preparing to go on stage, Kim says he is careful not to scatter his energies by chatting with other dancers or getting swept up in incidents taking place around him. When he steps on stage, he enters into a state of emotional suspension in which he neither focuses on technique or immediate results, but, rather, surrenders to the experience as a whole, living the drama of the character as though in a dream. (I am paraphrasing, obviously.) When he talks about it, it sounds as though he has found a unique way of tapping directly into the unconscious. Future dreams of Kim's include the opportunity to try his hand at choreography. Like anything, he says, he has no fantasies about whether he possesses a fantastic talent for it. He merely wants the chance to do his best. He has said as much about his talent for dancing--and look at the results! Working intensely hard, staying positive and always challenging himself, Kim has found the secret to excellence--and a way of living without regrets.

Many thanks for this interview! I watched it for the second time with great pleasure! Very interesting and deep. Kimin Kim is my favourite dancer from the very beginning of his ballet career & I am lucky to watch Kimin on the stage of Mariinsky theater. A week ago I watched Prix de Lausanne 2021 and can say that in whole the Korean dancers are very strong, in all aspects.

Thoroughly enjoyed this interview. It’s insightful and gives a glimpse into the work ethic, passion and struggles that go into the making of a top ballet dancer. I thought the interviewer did a really good job with her illuminating questions, even though she admits it’s the first time she is interviewing a ballet dancer.

Is mega interesting and fascinating life of a danseur étoile! He is also very polite and so is logic that says that everyone likes him! Is also inspiration that he says that he trained as SECRET when others thinked he was went home, so he could traine MORE! I think if nobody looks, is more free training. This is big inspiration for danseur who want become danseur étoile.

Saw you dance La bayadere yesterday at Costa Mesa. You were amazing! I went to the show because I wanted to see Alina Somova as she was featured in the Ballerina DVD along with Uliana Lopatkina, Diana Vishneva, Svetlana Zahkarova, so I figured she is not to be missed, and I knew nothing about you. But I think you really stole the show yesterday. Too bad the conductor (Heine) was off with his timing several times. Your jumps reminds me of my favorite male dancer, Angel Corella. Look forward to seeing you next weekend in Jewel in LA! Watching this interview is such a treat. You have a very nice smile, please update your photo at Mariinsky with a big smile.
