Juan Soto shuffled his way into the league as a teenager and was immediately heralded as a hitting phenom with elite plate discipline. At just 20 years old, he was a key cog for a Nationals team that made a miraculous run to win their first World Series. In the 2020 pandemic season, Juan posted video game numbers. 2024 marks Soto’s 7th year in the big leagues and 3rd team played for already, but he is still just 25 years old at the time of this video. Recently, Juan joined the New York Yankees, an organization that would like to keep him around long term. While it is still early in the season, Juan’s defense is much improved, and he has some web gems to show for it. Assuming he stays healthy, Soto is building a surefire Hall of Fame resume.

I’ve been a Yankees fan since I was born in 1992. I’ve never seen anyone like Soto. He’s ridiculously good. The Yankees would be fools to not lock him up long term for whatever he wants. He’s completely worth it

I recently played my second regular season of MLB The Show 24's March to October with the Reds. In a weird twist, I signed Juan Soto, and he ended up destroying the league with an insane 94 homers and a .389 BA. Even crazier, I traded for Rafael Devers and he hit 74 homers. I also had a game against the Rockies in Denver where I started in the 7th inning down 1-0, and scored 93 runs across the three innings I played. Soto hit nine home runs in that game. Devers hit TEN. At the end of the season, I checked player stats, and I somehow had half the team hit over 40 home runs. Yes, I am playing on the easiest difficulty, but I've never had anything like that season or that game happen before. Prior to the 93 run game, I had only ever gotten 30-something runs in a game two or three times.

It’s tight asf to hear older Yankee fans (55 or older) talk about Soto being the best pure hitter they’ve ever watched play for the Yanks. Whether it’s right or wrong it’s still crazy ppl are saying this. Also Soto is the AL MVP until proven otherwise. And yes I know it’s only May & I don’t give af. I know what analytics say and in my head, I know it’s been proven: on base percentage is the important thing. But I’m a 90’s kid, and it’s hard to make my brain accept that hitting .242 is acceptable for an all star level player.
@kenw2225

I remember bonds had a .600 obp, hitting near 300. Soto has won a batting title though , so he can get some leeway for the avg, right?

@@kenw2225 yes. Everything you said is totally logical. I guess it’s just nostalgia for a different era. Soto is obviously an absolute beast. Nice speaking with you.

@@kenw2225 Bonds had a .609 obp and hit .362, with .812 slugging in 2004. It's really hard to give anyone in todays game a pass as someone who grew up watching prime roid Bonds and Albert Pujols. Because it's been shown you can hit for power and have a high batting average without striking out a lot. Pujols still wasn't striking out a lot against todays pitchers even in his diminished form. None of this is to take away from Soto, he's definitely one of the top players of this latest generation, but it's really hard to be like the guy is amazing outside of his ability to walk a lot. Maybe he'll develop into something greater. I don't know. He kind of gives me Joey Votto vibes.
@ptythefool
@ptythefool 18 күн бұрын
.242 was and still is garbage lol. It's just been normalized that it's okay because of the three true outcomes, a homerun, walk or strike out. It's led to boring uninspiring baseball and to people becoming worse hitters in my opinion. I'm sure many will argue that people throw harder now and because batters see so many different pitchers throughout the game that it's just harder overall. I don't doubt there's some validity to that argument, but at the same time, it's really hard to be like prime Pujols wouldn't still be great in todays game. The guy never struck out 100 times, hell he only struck out more than 76 times twice, (93 his rookie year 2001 and 93 in 2017). Heck, even prime roided Bonds put up his 01-04 seasons against the shift. The great hitters just get it done regardless. The fact that, we, the fans, are being forced to settle for this garbage they call baseball now a days is sad and depressing. I really hope some actually great hitters come along at some point, but its probably a pipe dream. With all that said, maybe Soto will develop into a fine hitter. He is still pretty young.
@pathutchison7688
@pathutchison7688 18 күн бұрын
@@ptythefool I completely agree. And the proof about the pitching is that every other pitcher has to have two Tommy John surgeries. Meanwhile, Nolan Ryan would regularly throw 160 pitch complete games and not miss a start. I don’t like this style either. Give me guys like Ichiro and Tony Gwynn. They made baseball exciting.

I think I speak for all Yankee fans when I say this, I really fear that Brian Cashman is going to fuck this up. I hope I’m wrong but if I’m Brian Cashman and Hal Steinbrenner, I’m writing a blank check. I’m literally just asking the kid what he wants how many years how much per will make you stay in New York where you’re having much success And it’s not even Mother’s Day but I have a feeling they’re gonna go cheap and try to get him for the least amount that they possibly can spend but they gotta know the price is going to be driven up by multiple big market clubs cheap is the last thing you need to be trying to sign this kideverybody wants him

You realize that over the course of a full 162 game season the worst expected difference in runs between Soto and an average fielder is -6? Like you’re going to waste your DH spot because one of your fielders at his worst is expected to allow 6 more runs over 162 games. That is idiotic. A team is almost guaranteed to have a worse fielder than that or someone who needs the DH spot for rest purposes. Not to mention, Soto has a slightly above average arm. If the Yankees are able to keep him in a small right field where he doesn’t have to run far, he will likely grade as a plus defender.

Soto is amazing, and as a Yankees fan, he has been incredible to watch. But I honestly think he is slightly overrated. I understand the Nats weren't that great of a team most of his time there, but if you look at his production, it is top 5-10 player in baseball caliber but it is not other worldly. Career high in runs is 111. Career high average outside of a 60 game season was .313. Career high homers was 35. Career high RBIs was 110. Career high OPS outside of the 60 game season was .999. Dont get me wrong. This guy gets on base a TON. Commands the strike zone like no other. He's two steps ahead of the pitcher at all times. But he doesn't score a ton of runs, he doesn't do damage with his bat the way the top guys do, and he doesn't drive in a ton of runs. But... he is only 25 so that can all change.
