It was a different time back then, dev teams could experiment with ideas. See what works, if an idea successfully grabbed the audience, even more content was inbound. Not as a separate service, but built into the game day one. Plus tons of unlockable goodies. From characters, to music, art, and sometimes behind the scenes interviews with the dev team

Lets also stop living in delusion land and actually grasp that games today cost millions of dollars to make, unlike back in the 90s when they cost a fraction....Which has ALOT to do with the cancer people of gaming who keep crying that games need to be free but 40,0000k resolution and have 3,000fps. Because some delusional people live in free fantasyland where it shouldn't matter than people want more "advanced" games but seem to hilariously, idiotically think that games should either be free on a service or cost no more than an NES cart in 1987.

@@kadosho02 It was also a period where getting a home port took far longer as well to milk the arcade version for as long as possible. There was an almost year wait for VF2 from AC to Saturn, same with Tekken 2 and 3 from AC to PS1. This happened with Ehrgiez too, in arcades in February 1998, and home releases in Japan, NA and EU started roll out in December 1998, March 1999, and February 2000 respectively. They had plenty of time to add more features for home releases.

I love Ehrgeiz. It's a fun game to play/watch when people actually know what they're doing. Some of the controls can be confusing since there's a lot of different button combinations, but remapping the buttons helps with that. Also, I do not suggest playing with analog mode because for some reason that actually removes mobility options and access to other attacks. It would be really nice to at least get a port, but a remaster of this, Tobal, and Bushido Blade would be cool.

It was very likely the plan back then, Namco also had their hand in the game and the name Ken Mishima is quite the obvious hint. Not to mention that he looks like a mix of kazuya and Jin and even owns a company, Mishima construction. If the game would have catched on we would have probably seen him in the tekken games but i can only assume that he isn't part of the cannon anymore.
@carlosaugusto9821

@@brotbrotsen1100 Im not sure about that last part... because he didnt came from a TK game. So his status is a little similar of the SF EX chars, in the sense of being considered part of the franchise's world but not appearing in the game (TK or SF in either case) because they werent created in the game or for the game. SF EX was made for Capcom by Arika, the company of SF2's main producer after he left Capcom, so the original chars are not Capcom's property, they never appear in SF games. Another point about the similarities is the parallels with SNK's Art of Fighting. The character was made by the same person who created Tekken, so the similarities dont matter to him. And AOF's Ryo and Robert are similar to Ryu and Ken in some moves and personal dynamics, but they were created by the same person who created SF1 and just left Capcom and went to SNK, so the similarities dont matter to him as well.

Ehrgeiz was actually a really good 3D fighting game, and had really technical and deep mechanics too. I never knew until a friend of mine showed me clips and videos of people in Japan and other local tournaments in the west of people competing in this game. I play fighting games and my friend does too, but he pretty much explained the mechanics all throughout the video and ended up showing me in the actual game when we was playing. It was pretty nuts and i sort of knew why it may have not been too popular. But I know it was a good 3D fighting game.

It was an interesting experiment for the time when the genre was still strongly concentrated in the traditional 2d/3d forms. Some can say it was one of the early "arena fgs", before that concepts was fully realized, formalized and recognized by the general public. That subgenre, even if they started in the 90s, really became a thing just in the ps2 gen. That must have been helped by the big technology jump from the ps1 to ps2. One interesting point about this whole story is how Ishii is deeply involved in major chapters of the early history of the 3d fg genre. He developed VF1 and TK1, shaping the main form of the genre... and then developed an early arena fg in the 90s, that was an innovative idea for the time. Then after the 00s the arena subgenre became an important category in general gaming.

My friends and I grinded the hell out of this game and Tobal no. 1 as kids. It's a solid proto-arena fighter even with it's limited amount of attack buttons, but that's all you need really since movement plays a bigger role in gameplay, like Power Stone. Boy were reviewers wrong on who they considered overpowered, Tifa has an unblockable homing projectile combined with her excellent mobility only made her the 2nd best character by the community. The best character ended up being Koji for some reason. Quest mode was an amazing roguelite mode that carries on the tradition of Tobal. I also grinded the hell out of it too lol. The gameplay of it was adequate for what it was once you got the hang of it.

Koji is consider top over tifa because of throw loops. He had strings in tackle which was an unblockable for quick free damage. I personally think tifa kinda better because of the charge projectile mix up and other tech she has from it.

Speaking of Squaresoft PS1 RPG's and arena fighters, there was also an arena fighter minigame in Xenogears, that had a surprising amount going on for a random minigame.

First off great video TOP HAT. In terms of gameplay, I recommend if people are interested to watch modern japanese players play this game. You'll see a lot of the tech at play. I think what a lot of reviewers(mainly gamespot) got wrong was about the game being shallow is because they didn't know how to play the game. Its more apparent nowadays when watching good players play today. I do wish a part 2 was made to see how the game mechanics could be improved/innovated on.

Top Hat you should also do a video on the Tobal series as it came out around the same time as Ehrgeiz.

I played so much of the quest mode. Fun little action game where you could chip away at a dungeon

I played this on a demo disk, then I found it in a cabinet in some place in wildwood NJ. Had an absolute blast. Never realized it was ff7 related, I just thought it had cloud😂 ...I was young

I love Ehrgiez, and still play it from time to time. I also love the dungeon crawling RPG as well.

I remember getting this. And the strategy guide. Got so exited. Loaded it up. Couldn’t believe the controls. Even for the time this was insane. So floaty and choppy I couldn’t give it away lol

I still have this game and SOMEHOW they managed to find enough content in it for BradyGames to put out a whole guide book and I still own that too, it has a damn item chart in the back for the dungeon crawler

I rented Ehrgeiz when it came out, there was a dungeon crawler game attached to it. Does anyone remember that part? Was that the prequel to the fighting tournament or just some weird double feature promo?

Great video! I loved this game as a kid when I would rent it and I only played as Yoko, tifa and Yufi. 😊 Being a girl in the 90's obsessed with games like this was rare. Fighting games were the only genre where Girls were strong and platable. And as a kid I wanted them to be my friends! Fun Fact: I learned that Yoko is actually based off of a character named Saki from a live action show called Suke Ban Deka or Delinquent cop. A girl who fights bad guys with her YoYo. You should look it up you'll see it's almost a direct copy of her and not chun li. 😂

I had Ergheiz on my PS1 with my AR that allowed to play copied CDs. I had soooooo many imports. I was able to finish the RPG single player mode included in this game. It was sooooo hard and time consuming, especially playing the import version. Remember Flying Dragon on N64?

xD oh gosh yeah i got this game used on a flee market and was kinda ... confused. The combat system was kinda weird. The minigames were funny and the quest mode was also weird but good. The funny part for me which totally hit me was that during the credits you fight the final boss (it was kinda weird to battle behind the credit roll) and THEN you had to get the Sword before you get the good ending / or ending at all

For some reason I mostly remember Ehrgeiz because of the dungeon crawling parts and the whole stock market with wine minigame.

I just wanna pull Top Hat's leg here and say, he keeps mentioning Cloud and Sephiroth in Smash, but not mention Dissidia once lol. Anyway, Ehrgeiz was a game I loved playing at first. It was one of the many niche/obscure games I played in 2015 and definitely it helped made my year at that time as I was already out of high school by then. Also last i checked while Godhand does seem like a pretty prominent character in Ehrgeiz, it was suppose to be Yoko who is the game's protagonist.

I picked this game up on a whim one day, sometime after FF8 was just released. I'm always glad I got the game, too. It really deserves a lot more love and attention than it got, though the loud menu selection noise is still jarring to me.

I remember reading little bits about it in the old Official UK Playstation mag. I think it was still an arcade game at the time but can't remember when it actually came to console or what score they gave it. I assumed the FFVII cameos was to boost sales.
