I worked on this film. Unfortunately my scene was in the 3 hours removed from the original cut. 😢 However, the feeling on set was electrice, dynamic, and fun. It was a fantastic experience and everyone involved loved the work that they were doing. I saw the film at a premiere on The 25th and it surpassed my expectations which were already high. This really is a great movie, and thank you for this look into how it was made.

Worked on some this movie. As a client, Gareth Edwards and team were the best. They pushed quality but also were extremely collaborative and clearly understood the strengths and limits of post production CGI. It felt like real filmmaking and was night and day from some other big tentpole productions where changes were all over the place with no regard for time, budget, or the actual workflow/artistry. Gareth and team THANKED ME PERSONALLY for doing some extra work on a shot last min. This film will always hold a special place in my career/heart.

I spent a few days with Gareth, a honest down to earth guy who stands by his friends. When you hear his stories of how he move up through the industry you will realise he is no debutante- he earned his spurs the hard way. Looking forward to also buying the 4K Ultra when it comes out.

You can tell Garreth is one of those people who enjoys the "making" of the film, not the ego boost of "being the director of a large budget movie" - his gumption and humility is something to aspire towards for sure.

This guy worked in VFX, not a director just a VFX artist in the UK, for almost ten years. In an interview he said that while he regrets spending so long in VFX too scared to take the risk of directing, he also sees now how useful that time is by knowing exactly how to work in tandem with VFX when directing. Instead of the usual tactic of leaving everything to post-production, he knows exactly how his shots can work best with the VFX that comes later and there isn’t too much miscommunication or burden on the VFX artists.

I hope he brings a lot more of his experience and knowledge so more directors know how to best utilize VFX teams and VFX artists & teams start getting more respect and less workload in the long run.

His vfx work is amazing. I remember he did an Attila tv movie idk what the budget for it was. I think he said $50,000 but he did the direction / vfx . The methods he did to make the big battles on such a small budget personally is mind blowing. He made tutorials and posted them on fxphd

@@FrameVoyager I think it'll be a natural progression of amazing storytelling (not discounting the dramatics arts), that there will be more and more directors stepping up from VFX. VFX artists are usually skilled more often in a number of hobbies outside of their career discipline and quite often there are skills in some form of storytelling.

I love it when production has to be creative to make a movie on a budget. Honestly, those movies look and feel the most realistic in my opinion. They don't heavily rely on visual effects or CGI to tell the story and focus on physical props or locations and one's own imagination.

Agreed! And I think this movie shows that planning smartly, one can use VFX just as well as the larger budget films with a bit more planning. Also, helps a lot to have a director who has a background in visual effects.

One of the biggest reasons both Gareth and Grieg mentioned was the 12800 ISO. Apparently those night time beach scenes are lit with just moonlight, which is how they were able to keep the crew down to 4.

Totally makes sense too. Cinema Cameras are great, but they really require lighting to work well. This kind of camera allows you some flexibility. Really cool to see

It is fun to see quite a lot of recent productions like The Creator, Rogue One, Andor, Oppenheimer, Tenet, Dune, Asteroid City, Triangle of Sadness, etc. move back to shooting more and more in-camera and on-location whilst other, often more expensive productions lean heavily on the seemingly cheaper greenscreen or "volume" methods like The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, recent Marvel movies and shows, Red Notice or Death on the Nile. And funnily enough the on-location/in-camera productions are in my opinion nearly always the better movies.

Sony FX3 is a brilliant compact cinema camera with stunning image quality. The simple fact that this high end production movie was mostly shot on the FX3 says it all.

He revolutionized filmmaking... by... being sensible. Not wasting money on equipment, sets and locations that he didn't need. And by returning to the notion of "picture lock" in postproduction before firing up the VFX brunt work. It may feel like a "well duh!?" moment. But I do hope someone at studio executive offices watches this carefully. Although. While I keep returning to watch his films. I do also get that, they tend to not be the box office behemoths that Disney and the like want. He doesn't really do the crowd pleasing billion dollar revenue things. I think it will make its money back. But I am not expecting End Game turnout of audiences. But with a sensible budget. It shouldn't have to. I am just thankful that there are people doing big Sci Fi epics without getting bogged down in gear like Nolan and staying sensible with VFX and production unlike most studios.

Right? It's pretty crazy. Usually when you hear about productions being run like this it's a good sign. Directors that take a lot more care with their movies end up creating memorable movies. Just hoping this is one of them because it's been sad to see the lack of original sci-fi in theaters.

Visually speaking this movie is beautiful and well crafted. The only weakness lies in the plot which is pretty straight forward and lack depth. American bad, AI nice. Maybe we will get a director's cut that fixes this issues and explore more the lore !

Also: anamorphic character lends even nondescript locations and practical lighting a great deal of mystery and gravitas. Look at anamorphic films like MEMENTO or CHRISTINE, shot in rather workaday environments that nevertheless feel like mythic fever dreams.

This is finally a proof that "prosumer" cameras or just cheaper cinema cameras are capable of shooting a high budget VFX heavy films. Not just "eastern european short film about living in small town" kind of films. I hope that it'll make small filmmakers (like me) going out more and actually shooting films, not just thinking about the latest gear and limitations. Thanks for covering this topic good job as always. I'm also very interested on how it'll look like in IMAX cinema.

The trailer was shown in my Imax next to dune and gt when I went to see oppenheimer. Looked fine. In fact if it wasn't this video I would have not guessed and I work as a visual artist. Common moviegoers will definitely not see any difference.@@alexiskobalt7450

yes and no. they more or less use the same technology on paper, but are designed in a way that better suits professionals, also with the whole eco system behind it and lets be real, does a filmmaker really care about paying 10.000$ or 100.000$ for a camera when the movie budget is at 80.000.000$? and like mentioned, the low light scenes in the trailer look a bit shitty, so there are clearly some limitations. but yeah, for indie film makers, artists & advertising, the fx3 is a great choice.

I was at the beach they talk about when they were filming. Thailand was just reopening from Covid lockdown and what is usually an overcrowded beach was mostly empty that week. When we arrived at night they were filming and the lights were all off but there was hardly any signs of what was going on. It’s only the next morning that we realized that we were staying on a movie set! We got to see real close the equipment they were using and they had a big drone with the FX3 mounted on it that was quite impressive.

I'm watching this movie today. This movie looks good. I really loved Rouge one, the best thing that came out of Disney thats a conversation for another time. But the scale in rouge one battle scene at the bench was really impressive and the creator looks to capitalize on that and i cant wait.

This is how effects should be treated in films. I've heard first hand from people working on Marvel films the amount of money and visual effects footage that is pointlessly wasted... nice to see Gareth Edwards making some visually stunning work that isn't getting churned through the 'system'. It's amazing that they were able to achieve this using the most resourceful in modern technology, but let's not forget that the most important thing in making a great film is a great story, a great script, a great cast, and a great crew that truly want to make it. Without writing an essay, I will say that Andor added much needed depth, world building and focused on the stakes of a "forceless" side of Star Wars with dialogue that is by far more accessible to audiences while embracing the 70's used future aesthetic. end of essay.

Had a lot of constraints working within the star wars universe. Star Wars really needs to go to a different part of the timelines so they can do whatever they want with the story without having to make a billion connections

Also. I remember watchin a QnA with Edwards after a screening of Monsters at Stockholm Film Festival. He was asked what he used to shoot the film on. And he sighed. And responded something like: "Yeah, it is kind of the most boring aspect of movie-making. We used a depth of field adaptor on a digital camera. Next question." I don't remember the exact words. It was 15 or so years ago. But the sentiment was there. Even then. The camera was a means to an end. He used that camera setup for that film. and clearly, he continued to pick equipment according to what he needs for each film. No real baggage involved. An Alexa 65 for Rogue One. An FX3 for The Creator. If the FX3 was available for his Star Wars film, he probably would have used it. He may not be my favourite director (he has a solid track record, though) but he does have my respect there.

IN OTHER WORDS. Gareth respected everyone on the team. Including VFX, by locking down scenes to it's final. That way VFX teams don't work on stuff that would be thrown out the window. I knew Gareth would be awesome from the start. Believed in him since Monsters. Gareth and many other great directors like Neil Blomkamp, Alex Garland, and Dan Trachtenberg, Greg Frasier, etc. go by unnoticed.

As someone who owns the Sony a7siii, which is practically identical to the FX3 minus the better cooling and body design, seeing a blockbuster movie on the big screen filmed by said FX3, makes me feel more empowered that my camera can also do that

Right? Though what's really cool is how the camera was really selected to service a lot of the other cost cutting methods they used to get this movie down to $86 million. The why they used it and the production process is fascinating. A lot to learn about teaching yourself to be creative with the limits you are given from a low budget to an $86 million budget

I've watched this last week in IMAX during a secret screening organised by a local tech review company. It was a great movie, pacing was just nice as it allows you to understand the character and stroyline better. Was surprised it was shot on FX3 too after googling about the movie once we know the title.

I saw it on The 25th at a press screening in Bangkok. I agree with you completely. I was originally cast in a small role, but the scene was one of many that was cut. I loved the small production feel on set, and everyone was having so much fun making this movie.

@@andysmith8031 IMAX is a lot of different things. It's a type of theater viewing experience, it's a camera, and it's at the foremost a specific format. So while this wasn't filmed with an IMAX film camera, it was filmed with a ready for IMAX camera in the FX3. It's more about this production filming with IMAX in mind as it has been slated for IMAX theaters for a while.

Great video! This movie was so overlooked, it was amazing on so many levels. I really hope that the 5-hour cut will be released at some point, it wouldn't need VFX or a soundtrack to work when you look at how gorgeous the lighting and photography already is even without any special effects. Also amazing anecdote with the particle accelerator! Never would have thought they used a real location, just that it looked "soooo real"

Recommend watching the DVD extra making of doc for Monsters. Extraordinary how they made that movie. Seems they did The Creator in a similar way but with a bigger budget.

Not a fan of the aspect ratio, but would be cool to watch it on a three screen system. They tried so hard to make this look like modern movies, which sadly equates to muted, clinical images. It just seems like the cameras of today try so hard to make images as flat as possible, and every film looks the same. Look at films such as E.T, Blade Runner, The Shining, Annie, Alien, etc. Those were shot on the same film stock, but had looks unique to each film. Most films shot today look so similar, regardless of narrative. Is this a product of how Sony's prosumer cams render images, or how everyone wants to make films look "cinematic" with one method? Kudos to everyone who worked on this film, as it shows that gear matters less than the story. But if only they made the image stand out from the rest of the crowd.

I would say the image probably comes down to art direction as movies like the batman and dune have a very stylized look and production design. I mean Dune used grey screen instead of green screen so it wouldn't effect the light temperature. But to be fair to this film, they accomplished a lot for how much their budget was. I'll have to see this in theaters first before I can confirm the modern movie look you're referencing. But honestly, when I saw the trailer for this I liked the art direction of it. WE hall see!

Rogue One is the absolute best SW film in the Disney era. I am hoping this movie does well at the box office, not Barbie levels, but enough to make a profit after getting back the production and marketing costs. Excellent video!

I'm loving all of this. I'm a big fan of location shooting, and now rewatching the 13th Doctor era (Jodie Whitaker) you can see the choices of producer Chris Chibnall and his directors. Just amazing scale, and awe. We're going to miss this with the 2023 episodes and 2024 season, I think.

I love that this movie is shot on a camera i personally own and it really shows its never the gear...its the creative mind. BUT what really got me was when he said the beach scene wasnt closed down XDDD now that he said it and i go see it this weekend im gonna see it and now its ruined hahahahahahaha (not really but i just find it so funny) I like filmmakers like this. Just break the damn rules and look what you get? A gorgeous looking film! I just hope the story is amazing

Watched the film yesterday and without a doubt is one of the top 3 films of the year for me. The way that you are immersed into the fictional world is amazing, the storyline is so easy to follow and the score is exactly what you would expect if you have someone like Hans Zimmer.

Saw it yesterday on a 24m (80ft) screen in Australia. Some of the footage BARELY held up on that size screen (Hoyts X-treme Screen). Some nasty noise in places. Not nice filmic grain either, it's a dirty digital splotchy noise. Not to the point of total distraction, but it is definitely there in some scenes. Decent movie though. Solid 7 out of 10. VFX inconsistent but overall pretty good. Lot's of expository crap in there for the dummies in the crowd. Some stupid logic jumps too. Better than most superhero trash though. Some great performances despite a pretty rote and predictable script. The 2 leads are great. It's not the savior of the future of sci fi the early reviews are wanking on about, but a decent movie all the same. Slightly better than Elysium, not as good as District 9. Has a LOT in common with Rogue One.

Honestly... I thought shooting on location and embedding CGI in post was the obvious way to do it, back in the day. Why change a running system?! I will never for the life of me understand why anyone thinks using a greenscreen for literally every minor inconvenient scene, instead of real locations is cheaper, more practical, easier to work with or more convincing. It is baffling to me how shit like Indiana Jones 5 cost 4 times as much as this movie while looking so god awful in comparison.

Yep! But the difference here was the entire movie was edited down to it's final version before VFX even touched it. Meaning a hell of a lot less work

The "controversy" is ridiculous. Films, especially sci-fi and horror films, have been using real-world clips for decades to make the fictional world feel more grounded and real. Garth Edwards quite literally shot Monsters in the storm ravaged Gulf Coast.

I think for this one it's because it's still an ongoing issue that hasn't been resolved. Several years later and it's still making the news for the people that lived their still not getting any help of compensation. So I think that's why it's such a pain point. A western film can make money off of their tragedy while their lives continue to effected by that event.

Agreed, what are people thinking about this controversy? That the crew are happy the Beyrouth explosion happened? The reference is used for a scene in the film that's supposed to be a tragedy and a vector of massive change, This choice of reference could have brought up further discussions about the real catastrophe which is a good thing, instead they directed that potential discourse towards what? So weird

It looks like they used the actual footage and then just spruced up some buildings around it to make it look more sci Fi. Like for reference it's fine, but they basically just kinda copied the footage. Which makes me think it's a mistake and I never saw it in the film itself
