Despite being hailed as a model of post-Soviet reconstruction, Kyrgyzstan made international headlines in 2010 after the toppling of authoritarian President Bakiyev plunged this once peaceful country into chaos.
Just five years ago, Kyrgyzstan s Tulip Revolution was praised as a peaceful readjustment of a post-Soviet state. But the revolution was soon betrayed and Kyrgyzstan descended into authoritarianism under president Kurmanbek Bakiyev. This film chronicles the popular revolt that led to the toppling of Bakiyev in April 2010 and the chaos and inter-ethnic violence that ensued. Since 2010 the lack of power and legitimacy of the interim government has prevented the country from stabilising. As tensions continue to rise and the economy deteriorates, journalists like Gulzat Egemberdieva ask if the dream of becoming the "Switzerland of Central Asia" will ever be realised.

I love the fact that channels like this exist so that people’s eyes are opened to issues and situations to which we wouldn’t otherwise be exposed. I knew Kyrgyzstan existed, but I never knew about the political and ethnic tensions that existed there.

The biggest threat to countries like this always comes from outside influences. I hope that they can ensure that native industries, companies and workers are benefited by the Belt and Road Initiative and that they do not give up any more land if they default on their loans.

To understand the real effect of Soviet Union on countries, you have to listen it from the former KGB agent, Yuri Bezmenov... He has videos in youtube... Just type his name!

Why have you published this film now? As we see the film was made long time ago, and im not sure if ppl in the film were informed that they would appear in youtube docfilm after such a long time. What is the purpose of the film? I dont get the message you want to ppl know. Thank you. Im researcher from Japan.

Some of the footage is less than 20 years old. What is the purpose of your question. The purpose of a documentary ultimately is to document which this film did. Why should old footage not be on KZfaq? Why would people agree to be filmed then be upset when it’s published and broadcasted? I’m a nobody from the USA. Thanks

If the soviets supposedly ran it so well then you would expect the transformation of this "civilised" soviet paradise country after the collapse of the USSR to run more smoothly and them keeping friendly relationship with the Russia but the opposite is the truth like we can see with a lot of former USSR countries. We can see the same trend even in 2020 with Belarus and Ukraine. Seems like the soviet influence and this almost invasive exporting of russian population to different countries was not the key to normalisation and creation of a healthy, progressive society. Still "brilliant" soviet planning had to be forced on these people.
