I caught James at the MATRIX conference in Leeds in September 2016. I'm a fan of his work so this was cool. We grabbed a moment to make a super quick video.
Go see James' videos on his KZfaq channel / drjamestanton

Yeah, not everyone's arms twist far enough in that direction to even do it. And magicians have been using this as a warm-up trick on stage for years.

The MATRIX conference looks like it was the place to be--maths shenanigans for the win! We'll just have to hope Ty Yann makes it back eventually so you can finally make a video with him.

Yann has been to Cambridge and I have been to Seoul. Both times we spent so much time chatting that we forgot to make a video.

We should probably be glad you didn't have enough time to start chatting with Dr. Tanton so we could have this video. Your loss, our gain!

Great two interesting mathematicians in one video. Incidentally I'm supervising an IB Extended Essay at the moment for a student writing about fractional number bases inspired by Tanton's Exploding Dots.

I sometimes try the salute without this video, and I fail. More practice required. On another note, just enjoyed listening to your conversation with Brady Haran on his »Numberphile« podcast (episode from 2019-05-20 titled »The Singing Banana - with James Grime«). Highly recommended! Cheers!

My arm joints aren't made for this. It's impossible the one way (right over left) and still quite hard the other way. Left hand can turn maybe 120°, the right one 160°, so it is still obvious. But hey, on the other hand (no pun intended) I can do the Lotus position without needing any hands to force my legs and also get one foot behind my head! Any salute I can do with that? ;)

The hardest part is keeping your arms outstretched and not bending them. Hopefully with a little practice we can salute fellow mathematicians :-)
