"The Internationale" conducted by Arturo Toscanini--BANNED by U.S. censors!

In 1944, to honor the Allied victory in Italy, legendary counductor Arturo Toscanini--a refugee from Fascisim in his home country--decided to conduct a performance of Verdi's "Hymn of the Nations". "Hymn" is a composition that Verdi orginally built around the national anthems of Britain, France, and Italy. In order to honor all four of the major Allies, Toscanini decided to add "The Star Spangled Banner" for the U.S. and "The Internationale" for the Soviet Union. The music was performed by the NBC Symphony Orchestra, with the Westminister Choir and the great tenor Jan Peerce as soloist; conducted by Toscanini. It was filmed as a featurette to be shown in movie theaters, and was narrated by Burgess Meredith.
In the early 50's, at the height of the Red Scare and McCarthyism, U.S. censors excised the portion of this performance that featured the "Internationale".
For years the sequence containing The Internationale was considered forever lost. But recently a copy of this missing piece of film was rediscovered in Alaska. So now this rousing rendition of the Internationale--together with chorale and orchestra under the direction of a great conductor--can be enjoyed again.

In 1944, I was born into a poor but musical family. In 1954, when I heard that Arturo Toscanini had laid down his baton - symbolic of his retirement - I cried like a baby. I graduated from high school in 1962. My graduation present from my parents is a still life painting with a violin in the foreground, some sheets of music behind that and a wine bottle and a mandolin behind that. There is a small picture of Toscanini that appears to be stuck to the wall in the background and two tickets to Carnegie Hall that appear to be stuck into the frame of the picture.

I had a co-worker who had the "Internationale" as the ring-tone on his phone. One day, my company owner heard it and instantly fired the guy. I live in an "at-will employment" state, and employers can summarily fire you for just about anything and without cause. It's a mystery why such an inspiring song can arouse such violent hatred in the capitalist class.

Honestly, to be banned by US censors is a quality seal for anything in my opinion. Thank you for posting even the tiniest excerpt of this glorious work!!! God, I just hate the hypocrisy of this country sometimes, how we can pride ourselves on the freedom of speech and press and whatnot and yet happily censor anything and everything that doesn’t align with our very specific line of beliefs.

Song always stirs my heart, and this rendition is superb - expect no less from Toscanini. In Dr Zhivago, there's a scene where the workers gather to sing this anthem. Thing is, it was filmed in Spain, while still under Franco. They told all the extras: "We want you to learn this song", and they all replied "Don't worry, we know it." Police poured onto the set demanding to know who in the crowd was singing the loudest, and all around people were popping bottles of Cava, assuming Franco must have died.

If we are to experience Toscanini performing this music, you should accept also that he, the Maestro himself, decided to amend text on Italy, and to add International and US national anthem. The differences between anarchists and MLs is a lot deeper than just “internationalist” vs “nationalist”. Although not all supporters of the USSR are MLs. There are very internationalist USSR-supporters (although they typically oppose Stalin).

This was the anthem for all those that struggled against Fascism in World War II. The place in history of this music is cared. I have been to protests with people all over the world and of many different political creeds. We ALL sang this song. This song is the anthem for all those that struggle against oppression. That is the historic significance of this song. I feel that it will endure and be relevant and cherished as long as there is struggle for Justice and Freedom.

+ScipioAfricanusI Let's talk about the USSR in WWII, Aside from the non-aggression pact, the Soviet Union provided Nazi Germany with thousands of tons of oil, iron ore, construction materials, and grain to the German Army while their own people toiled in starvation The Soviet NKVD and the Nazi SS collaborated very closely during 1939 and 1940. The NKVD was providing lists of German Communists and Jews to the Nazis from 1937 to 1939.Most of those people died in Nazi Concentration Camps. Stalin Killed 30 million people The Soviets had Gulags, work camps, and mass deportationsfor 20 years before the Nazis even started, and Hitler based his entire system of extermination and deportation off of the Soviet Union 27 million Soviet Citizens died in WWII, the communist partyalways tried to decrease that number. Why? Because only a fraction of them were killed by the Germans. Whenever the Red Army marched into battle, there was the NKVD behind them firing forward so that nobody could move back. Almost 1/4th of all Soviet Casualties in WWII were fromtheir own side. When the Red Army "Liberated" Eastern Euroope, over 5 million women were raped by Red Army soldiers After the war was over, The Soviets didn't shut down theNazi Concentration Camps in their occupied zones. In fact, they continued to use them for 20 years after the war ended.

Wonderfull Internationale! I believe all the performers are passed away but the ideas of socialism will never die. Even here, in Estonia which suffers under the yoke of right wing greedy capitalism conducted by Reform party. Stalin´s terror had discredited the ideas of socialism and helped the capitalist dogs to achieve all power after the restauration of independence. Despite the strength of the right wings power here I believe on a one nice day we will get ride of brutal capitalist opression an will live in a free, fair society. It would have been broadcast once, with no references to Communism. How many commies in the US would have resulted? It's not like the average American even knew the national anthems of other countries. They typically don't even know who their members of Congress are. Maybe it was censored just to flip one at Russia.

It's sad, really. Senator McCarthy and his paranoid demagogic minions were definitely a wart on the face of our history here in America. I certainly don't lament the end of their dominance -- although, sadly enough, they have some modern counterparts stirring up some unnecessary toxicity here at the current time, in service to our outgoing President's divisive philosophy... Then, as now, the hatred and irrationality is most unwelcome. Hopefully this too shall pass, as it's quite an embarrassment. Can't say that hearing this gives me any urge to be philosophically "Soviet" anyway, so I don't feel particularly violated or corrupted by its "insidious" influence!😂🤣🥴🤪

Oh Lord..... I think banning music is stupid, but really -- why the Internationale? The Soviet National Anthem would have made more sense. After all, to the extent that the tide of war was turned against Germany, it was through appealing to the Russians' sense of nationalism, not discredited Marxist-Leninism.

Beautiful music, played from the heart for a beautiful hope against oppression and exploitation and equity for all mankind, just as relevant today as it was when it was penned. I still hope for true peace based on an equitable sharing of entitlement to this life and planet. Toscanini has also been noted for his temper in rehearsals. Apparently less controlled later in life, he was known to vent his anger in front of the orchestra when he thought they were not playing well. One well-known example comes from a recording of a rehearsal for La Traviata in which he yells in frustration when the double basses aren't quite together. -_Wikipedia_
