The Intrepid | Sailing from San Diego to San Francisco Bay

This video documents the recent sailing trip I crewed on onboard the sailing vessel The Intrepid. We motor-sailed from San Diego, California to the San Francisco Bay area. 10 days, 111 hours at sea and 470 nautical miles. The uphill battle against wind and currents, sailing north on the west coast is no pleasure cruise.
The crew were as follows:
Tim Brill (Owner)
Cody Brill (Captain and son of Tim)
Nigel Howat (English Sailor/45+ years sailing experience)
& James Frederick (thats me).

I will also be uploaded each leg of the trip as "episodes" that will feature commentary at the end reading some of the journal entries and talking about what happened or what we saw on that particular part of the trip.

About the Crew Members:
Tim Brill was a professional mountaineering guide for many years and has climbed all over the world. A few years ago Tim bought The Intrepid, which became famous in 2008 as it sailed around the world by the youngest person to solo sail around the world (Zac Sunderland). Tim and his sons have completed the ASA certifications 101-108 and have several trips in the planning stages. The down wind sailing in San Francisco Bay was epic running on them waves and a sweet tack in a big blowing conditions. Always an amazing adventure, and the music was sensational! 4/11/63 peace James.

i've heard sailors say the trip from san diego to san francisco is difficult but you guys sure made it look easy.

the power of editing haha, it wasn't hard just very slow.... its like driving a car from San Diego to SF at 3 miles an hour.... it was made easier because the captain chose to marina hop all the way up. I think the total trip took 12 days? we took a day off in Monterey but otherwise we were on the move daily. I would love to sail the other way, but deliveries are usually the not fun way.

This has kept me GLUED to the screen Sailor James!! AMAZING footage of your journey!! Thank you for taking us along! I'm playing catch-up from oldest to current! Absolutely breath-taking this is!! Ya won my heart @ CAT STEVENS!! The song was chosen PERFECTLY it sailed right along! Oh yea!!! It's DEFINITELY a Wild World! ;) San Fran Bridge looked just a bit creepy there!! :O Still beautiful however!! Your music selection is spot-on here.. the first one knocked me out of my seat, but was still adjustable to the ears, the view was well worth being on the floor! LOL I can't believe it takes this long to get from those two destiny's!! Never would have dreamed that! But what a journey!! This has made me feel as though I was on that boat with y'all... thanks so much once again Sailor James!!

I"ve seen some videos of point conception, and it can get HUGE. What was your game plan for Point C? What time of day? What season? Also, the wind looked brutal at the SF inlet. Was that nerve wracking, or just anther day? Thanks for posting this video.

The captain and an old salt with 40 years experience were in charge of the navigation but my guess is we would have headed for Morro Bay or just headed back and into Goleta. They watched the weather window for a few days and it was dead calm when we made it round. The wind inside the bay was ripping for sure and you have to time it with the tides or you can't even make it under the bridge. I sailed with some friends in the SF bay again in January of this year and the winds are no joke up there, but super fun. thanks for watching

I thought your video was interesting. It would’ve been nice to know the size of your boat. It was my understanding that you were normally sailing against the wind and the seas when you went from south to north along the California coast. So did you have to tack out? It would’ve been useful if you had to discuss the navigation issues and attacking issues with tacking was necessary. It appeared that you Motard quite a bit because they were scenes were you had no sales up. I think a little narration would’ve been helpful, especially about what techniques you used to go north in the face of Windansea‘s or if that was even it’s sort of a problem. I had a cousin who had a 25 foot sailboat, that he could trailer and he Sailed it out of morrow Bay but he had to give it up here because he found that the sea state was constantly big and there was a lot of wind and it made it a really rough and uncomfortable ride. I know that sailing from Long Beach or LA Harbor to get north to Marina Del Ray is pretty tough unless you go early in the morning and motor, because otherwise you have to tack all the way up almost to Catalina. And those are the issues I was looking forward to see how you did it and what you did.But I’d liked to see your trip.Thanks for the video

Yeah this was one of my earliest videos and I wasn’t as experience making videos with narration and stuff at that point. The trip up the coast is 100% motor sailing unless you sailed the “clipper route” meaning you sail offshore a 100 or so miles then tack back towards the coast. This way takes MUCH longer than motor sailing in hops up the coast. We are actually about to make this passage again on our own boat to explore the Bay Area for the summer and we will be motoring from harbor to harbor all the way up then we will get to enjoy some good sailing on the way back down
