Apple has a game changer on it's hands with the iPhone 15 Pro. Shooting photos in RAW at 48 megapixels the iPhone 15 Pro camera rivals professional cameras. On top of that you now have Apple log and the ability to shoot in ProRes 4k 60fps. Looking at Apple Log vs Flog2 is super interesting. There are so many uses for the iPhone now as a professional photographer. Would you use the iPhone for professional work?

Maybe. If the lighting conditions were ideal and I wanted wide angle (24mm) everything and didn't need shallow DOF.

IF I already owned an iPhone AND IF I was in a situation where I am on an event, on a nice location with perfect conditions etc AND my camera is not with me but I needed to make a social media story/reel for my professional account, yes. Otherwise, no. I will not sell my DSLR (It's not even mirrorless) and all the photography equipment needed for professional work, for an iPhone, for the next 5 years at least. You can't change battery instantly on the iPhone when it gets low and you are on fire, you need to recharge it or hold a power bank along. You can't fit external speedlight or hot shoe flash trigger with many speedlights at the same time. So absolutely no control over added lighting. I do not think an iPhone can handle well a 12-hour wedding day in a hot summer day, without overheating. It is consumer grade equipment. You have no ability for interchangable lenses, so in many cases you do not create a photo, you take a photo. I think they are enough. If I take more time I will definitely find more.

I don't have money for new lenses and am hoping it is some silly little fix. I have Canon 5d Mark IV. For lenses, I have Canon 70-200mm and Canon 35mm. They seem to not be broken but they are not focusing, and it is stressing me out :( Is there something else I can do to fix it? Wish you would have used portrait mode and tried to match the perceived bokeh... of course on fuji there's more since the sensor is larger and your aperture wider but i was hoping we could see if there's a big difference between artificial bokeh and natural one. I should fuji since 2012 but this year i'm tempted to sell a lense and get the iPhone 15 Pro Max...

The main reason I didn't use portrait mode is because you can't shoot in RAW and also portrait mode at the same time. Shooting in RAW was how I was able to match the photos so well as far as color and edit. However Lightroom did just add a blur feature so you can add a "portrait mode" after the fact. I'll probably make a video showing that as well.

As a Fuji photo and video shooter, your video is amazing. Really impressive. You almost made me run to the apple store to trade my 13 in for a 15 pro, because I think it would be an amazing asset to do b-roll and reels for events I am photographing. BUT my real major deal breaker for iPhone videography is the lens flare... which keeps improving but would still prevent me from delivering iPhone videos to a client if I am shooting for instance a stage lit by spotlights in a dark hall and I see the little clone flares of the spots on the cloud...

I think iPhones are really helpful as backup option for situations like large group portraits. With a professional camera it's easy to incidentally end up with some of the people not totally in focus, whereas iPhones excel at keeping EVERYTHING in focus. My sister got married and the highly experienced professional wedding photographer of over ten years experience (and studied photography in college) ended up delivering group photos where some of the people weren't in focus. The side pictures somebody took with a phone turned out better. The iPhone may also be better in low-light if you don't have flash (especially if you don't have a top of the line camera and lens combo).

Sounds like the wedding photographer had thier aperture set wrong, that's the general deciding factor for what is in focus.
@LightingUpYourLifePhotoVideo
@LightingUpYourLifePhotoVideo 8 ай бұрын
@@Forest0922 That's probably true. But the point is, even a highly experienced professional wedding photographer can make a mistake like that which ruins priceless memories. The iPhone is pretty much idiot-proof. Using the iPhone may be tacky, but it can be a nice backup option just in case you didn't get your manual settings on your camera quite right. On a really bright day, it can be virtually impossible to tell from your camera screen whether you nailed the settings or not. So taking a quick shot with your phone "just in case" may save you from a really problematic mistake.

@@LightingUpYourLifePhotoVideo I get what it saying, most ppl are going to shoot in auto mode an iPhone unless they are specifically going to manual for a reason. If you are in manual mode on any phone the same thing can happen. It's also a possibility to shoot in auto on cameras but most professional will use manual or aperture prior mode. But again, I get what ur saying 100%

As a wedding photographer, all the AI processing in cell phones is amazing! Still, it's easy to look good on a tiny screen. I'd like to see a side by side of an 8x10 print! My 26mp fuji can print a 24x36 poster of a bride and groom and you can see every thread in her dress! But I'll spend more on a lens than an iPhone or fuji body!

Thanks for the video. I think in some of the pictures the iPhone pics seem to be more sharp. I have a Sony camera and am not afraid to admit that for portrait and landscape photography the iPhone comes darn close to equaling a professional camera. If you just handed a person a photo and did not tell them that you took it with an iPhone, they wouldn’t know any different! As a researcher, I would have to say that there is a lot of bias that is evident in the comments. No one wants to admit that a phone camera could ever take a better photo than a professional camera. Either because they spent thousands of dollars for the professional setup, or because cameras have been around for so much longer they naturally have to be better. I can look at the photos side by side, and honestly say that at times the iPhone pics looked sharper/better and others like the Fuji pics looked better. Again the differences are so minute that many professionals would have a tough time picking the photos in a blind test.

It's no even close. iPhone and Android phones raw files have too much baked in, like sharpness, contrast tone mapping and other things. In Android you have apps to dial the raw cooking in the phone, accessing the camera2 API. Other thing it's that most of phone sensors are only capable of deliver 10bit raw, and a few of them can deliver 12bit raw in certain circumstances. Thats for speed reasons for the HDR and tone mapping, high speed video, etc. Of course 90% of a good photo is the photographer. But even some old compact cameras with 1inch sensor, or used old apsc mirrorless or DSLR are way better than a phone.

I don’t enjoy shooting on a phone because to me it doesn’t feel good in the hands. But in terms of image quality, the gap is closing each year. In music, analog gear is getting replaced with digital emulations more and more (thinking of guitar amps/pedals, electric pianos, analog synths, acoustic drums). I expect the same thing to happen with cameras. At the moment, if you want high quality images with a shallow depth of field, a phone can’t do that yet. But if you combine a tack sharp photo with long depth of field and a 3D map, it should be possible to model certain camera and lens types in post. I’m sure engineers are already working on something like this. It doesn’t exist yet, but I’m sure it will at some point, and this will inevitably lead to a new kind of camera. As soon as that gets more affordable/practical/accepted, it’ll change what kinds of cameras most photographers use.

Yeah shooting on the phone feels weird. I'm not going to lie. But a bunch of younger people are doing it so it's probably comfortable to them. I wonder how the iphone using portrait mode (adding some artificial depth if feel) would compare. Its the lack of depth that makes an iphone/smartphone stick out for me.
@jbivphotography
@jbivphotography 8 ай бұрын
The problem is portrait mode doesn't allow you to shoot in RAW since the iPhone is doing all of the processing at that point. With RAW I'm able to fully edit a photo like I would with a professional camera rather than letting Apple do it all. I did try to artificially add some background blur myself but it didn't work out to well. I'm going to keep trying however because if it's possible it'll end up making the photos look close to professional.

Not quite shure, while the basic photographic quality of the 15pro is good, I dislike the "all sharp" image look that screams "smartphone", and wonder why you didn't use the portrait mode. Not pushed to it's max, but moderately, to pull the eye away from the busy background.

You can’t shoot portrait mode photos in RAW. RAW gives you the power to actually edit the photos like you would a professional camera which is how I’m getting the color tones and editing I am out of the iPhone in this video.

I wouldn’t even entertain this idea. It will just give people the wrong ideas. Apple is clever in their marketing and the parameters between iphone and a professional are completely different. It’s important to understand the science behind it which many people dont. Will it produce a good photo? Sure, but how many people actually know how to take a good photo? Continue to entertain the idea that iphone is as good as a pro camera and thatll be the end to pro photography as we know it

I don't believe so. No one will ever be able to out-do a skilled professional with a professional camera. If anything it'll just cut all of the photographer's who aren't really good out of the market since folks will feel like they can do the same on their phones. But a truly skilled photographer will always be something sought after.

Cell phones aren’t nearly as good as cameras, but they are improving. There’s no doubt phone photography is convenient, but take an iPhone and put it in tough lighting situations and compare its output to a decent camera. High ISO the camera wins. Autofocus, camera wins. Dynamic range, camera wins. Most modern cell phones and cameras shoot decent images in good lighting, but I’m not picking up an iPhone over a dedicated camera.

Honestly after shooting this session in RAW I'm not too sure. What many people are missing in this video is by shooting in RAW I have much more data in the photos to work with and because of that I can actually edit these photos professionally. Meaning that even in a low light situation I could probably clean up the photo. Obviously camera will always be better but I think a bunch of people or mislead in thinking what the iPhone can't do.

Whatever you can do with Lightroom with shadow recovery will still be worse with what’s top line smartphone can do by just shooting in auto mode. Don’t get me wrong, I still think that Fuji 55-200 f3.5-4.8 will get you the most beautiful looking photos as long as the lighting is good, but if you take that sucker inside it will all just be magenta shifted. If you want to have many cameras for many occasions then all power to you, if you want to have one camera to do it all and you don’t want to spend the money on FF then you’re better off getting a smartphone. I had high hopes for Fujifilm but the fact that they went for megapixels instead of improving the light catching capability is just ridiculous.

Dude, this is such a silly topic and I love how the marketing team especially with Apple tries to get people to debate this. Imagine if giants in the camera industry like Canon, Sony, or even Fujifilm had to sell their cameras, and smartphones could outperform them at their primary function. That would be a significant concern. However, it’s worth noting that if you’re keen on learning the fundamentals of photography, like mastering shutter speed, F-stops, and ISO settings, it’s perfectly fine to start with an iPhone or similar device as a practice tool. There’s still a substantial gap between smartphones and dedicated cameras. Certainly, smartphones are being used to shoot movies nowadays, but it’s crucial to remember that these films are often edited and enhanced using expensive equipment. The whole story isn’t fully disclosed because the emphasis is on the fact that the footage was captured with a phone, rather than highlighting all the essential details and intricacies involved in the entire process.

Who takes portraits with 24mm anyway? This video makes no sense at all. Anyone who has ever photographed amateur family or friend portraits with a 50mm f1.8 nifty fifty that costs $100 on a full frame or crop sensor knows that the iPhone has absolutely no chance. Either in terms of sharpness or depth of field. Today you can buy a small used camera, 2-3 used lenses. You'll spend less, and you'll have control over every photo you take.
