I am especially pleased that some of the history of the original 69th NY at first Bull Run was described. Their story is an incredible epic. A few years ago I learned of their amazing history while helping to do research for a painting of the requiem mass for their First Bull Run fallen at St. Bridget’s, in the lower East side of Manhattan, NYC, right by Tomkins Square Park which had been their drill field. Among many, many other unique happenings, their priest was recalled for blessing a cannon and was the first U.S. chaplain ever photographed (Mathew Brady). Complements to a very clear and succinct presentation.

The Irish Brigade flag in Dublin was presented to the people of Ireland by President John F. Kennedy when he visited Ireland in 1963.

My Irish family came to America in 1849 and what I have learned at least from my Irish relatives is they hated being oppressed by the English and they sympathized with the oppressed blacks.

These days History making movies of the American Civil War are being created and are very popular. This presentation should be the latest of Movie to be made. For the lesson that could be shown of a immigrant heritage that is not learned and played a roll in the building of the United States Of America. That is presented here. Thank You.

Simply a phenomenal presentation on the Irish Brigade.

That picture that was taken behind the wall on Marye's Heights was not taken just after Fredericksburg in December, 1862. It was taken in May of '63 after US forces took it in a adjunct to the Battle of Chancellorsville. It had been thinly held by Confederates who quickly abandoned it when it was obvious that they could not hold it. They evacuated to a stronger position already held.

I wish she would of even mentioned the 116th PA Vol Regiment. Not just a Regiment from Penna. They were a Irish/German regiment mustered from Philly with roots deep into Pennsylvania. And served well with the Irish Brigade with pride.

Meagher is pronounced Mar as in bar. Nice presentation.

As a Sligonian I might just mention that Sligo is pronounced Sly-go not Slee-go. :)

Im not even Irish but The Irish Brigade of The Civil War just gets my attention. Maybe its because im Catholic like they were? But one thing is for sure, They were Brave Warriors.

An excellent presentation! I am a little confused about her statement of the Confederates possibly moving up the Cumberland Valley on the way to Harrisburg. Moving up the Cumberland Valley would have enabled the Confederates to get as far as Harper's Ferry. What route would the Confederates have then taken to get to Harrisburg?

At Bull Run the 69th wasn't in grey uniforms, the only unit in Sherman's brigade in grey was the 2nd Wisconsin Infantry. The 69th New York however did shoot at the 2nd Wisconsin, firing into their backs no less.

Good general presentation, despite some mispronunciations and factual errors.

The most "Napoleonic'moment in the war occuredon Day1, when Confederate infantry the Union right thought they were threatened by Buford's cavalry, and formed square from a French-style column of divisions. Those were the first squares an American army ever formed on a battlefield, the nearest equivalent being "V"of Buena Vista in Mexico!

Many of the Irish-born soldiers would have experienced the Irish Famine (1845-1847) as children. It is estimated that one million Irish died in the famine.

Why didn't they just storm the Sunken Road at Antietam? It was 30-40 yards from the crest of the hill down hill into the road. They just stood at the top of the ridge and traded shots with the Confederates.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin is always thought of as "German" immigrant city. But, before the Civil War, Milwaukee was an "Irish" immigrant city...and was "owned and operated" by Irish politicians. In 1860, the Irish heads of city government and the Irish state militia leaders boarded the Lady Elgin passenger ship to sale down to Chicago so they could vote listen to a speech by Steven Douglas, Abe Lincoln's opponent at the Republican convention at the Wigwam in Chicago. After the day's activities ended, Irish reboarded the Lady Elgin for the return trip to Milwaukee. But just a few miles outside of Chicago, the Lady Elgin was rammed by another ship...and soon broke apart...and went to the bottom..along with 300 of the key Irish politicians and civic leaders from the city. The WORST loss of life recorded on the Great Lakes. THAT was the end of Irish control of Milwaukee..and the beginning of German immigrant control. And the reason Milwaukee is always thought to have a German flavor..even today.

Is there a man so mean that would not defend this country that gave you shelter and sustained you in your time of greatest need. I say there is not a man of Ireland who would be so base as to turn his back on this land. Thomas Francis Meagher recruiting speech in Washington Park NY 1861.
