Fun fact Brad Bird was inspired to make this film as a memorial to his sister Susan, who died at the hands of her estranged husband by gun violence. His pitch was what if a gun had a soul and didn't want to be a gun?.

I don’t understand how this one slipped through the cracks and isn’t held as high as the rest of the modern animated classics. Animation is crisp. The way they were able to merge the cg and hand drawn styles was seamless (for its time at the least). Music was heartfelt, hard hitting, and hopeful. The messages and tones were off the charts for a “kids movie”. Makes me tear up every time. *Suupermann* Edit: Also a pretty choice cast

After the failure of Quest for Camelot, Warner Bros. expected the movie to bomb, so they did almost no promotion and had no marketing plan. By the time the test screenings showed them that everyone loved it, there was no time to do proper marketing and promotion.

@@jbvader721Why should you be afraid to speak your mind? It's not like the name Zack Snyder can hurt the "true DC fans" and the james gunn pedo fans so much that they'd spend their entire lifetime criticizing him for everything! This is a good scene but it's nowhere near the impact Zack Snyder's Superman has had on the world and to the Superman media. But very few people would acknowledge that because Zack Snyder destroyed their favourite marvel stories by a mile. Zack Snyder's vision will always be the pinnacle of epic mythological storytelling and it's gives me immense joy to see incels like you crying and whining about it.

I read somewhere that the "Self-Repair" ending was tagged on. Too many kids & parents left the test screenings in absolute bits so WB ordered a happier ending. They totally screwed up the marketing for this film because it deserves so much more praise and appreciation.

I was able to see the director's edition in theaters and I think the new scenes actually work to add a bit more to the story and the Giant's decision in the end. Of course, it's still great without them but it was cool to see them. Also, Vin Diesel is excellent at playing characters with a limited vocabulary.

One of the greatest cartoon movies ever made. Brad Bird did so much right. Story, editing, voices, time setting. Making and adding the giant's dream was a big plus. And little things like the B Moster movie with the wooden acting, the short shot of the photo by Hogarth's clock tells us his father was a jet fighter pilot killed in the Koren War and when the General and Kent are riding in the jeep how they sway when it starts up and goes forward. I could go on and on.

I understand why they had the Giant be alive at the end but i do think it kinda undermines some of the movie's themes of "it's bad to kill but its not bad to die" and "souls dont die". Personally i think the movie would be more poetic and meaningful if we were left to assume the Giant died or at least kept his fate unknown so that those themes could hit home even harder
@cherrygrabber7172
@cherrygrabber7172 Жыл бұрын
I mean, it's metaphorically someone taking a bullet for you. Whether they die or not it doesn't take it away from the sacrifice they've made at that moment. Though the Duck Dodger's parody does have that extra sad moment where you actually see the robot in pieces, destroyed.
@kurtacus3581
@kurtacus3581 Жыл бұрын
@@cherrygrabber7172 I know what you mean and i agree. Im not saying his sacrifice isnt meaningful. But what I'm saying is that one of the big messages of the movie is souls dont die and its not bad to die. So to say "hey dont be sad kids, he's not dead he's still alive, see?" kinda betrays that message.
@cherrygrabber7172
@cherrygrabber7172 Жыл бұрын
@@kurtacus3581 It kind of does go full circle with the whole "I can call my pieces and put myself back together", which he kind of did risk his life not once, twice, but three times. First was the train, Hogarth from the fall, then the entire town from the missile. The "soul" could've been being selfless and saving lives, that stays after he supposedly died, hence the statue plus everyone's respect (minus Mansley's *who was selfish the whole way through).

Here is some interesting facts about the film. The Iron Man: The Musical concept album, released in 1989, is an adaptation of Ted Hughes' story The Iron Man(1968), produced and largely composed and performed by Pete Townshend of The Who. It also stars Roger Daltrey, Deborah Conway, John Lee Hooker, and Nina Simone. The three then-surviving members of The Who (Daltrey, John Entwistle, and Townshend) performed as a group in two songs. A full stage version was mounted at the Young Vic theatre in London in 1993. On the strength of this, Warner Bros. optioned the story for a movie which, with a very different adaptation of the story, became The Iron Giant; Townshend received an Executive Producer credit for the film version. the original story had TIM coming to earth, befriending Hogarth and eventually the whole town, and defeating a giant galaxy sized alien dragon that wants to eat the earth. Brad Bird was in part inspired to make this movie as a memorial to his sister Susan, who died at the hands of her husband by gun violence. His pitch was this: "What if a gun had a soul and didn't want to be a gun?" "Frank" and "Ollie," the two trainmen that Kent interviews after the derailment, are caricatures of Disney classic animators Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston two animators of classic Disney films and cartoons and two members of Disney's famed Nine Old Men. They also perform the voices for the characters. The Signature Edition(2015) adds two new scenes that were storyboarded for the original film, but were never fully animated until this release. In the first, Dean and Annie have a conversation at the diner right before the farmer sells dean the tractor with the bite taken out of it. In the second, the Iron Giant has a dream in which he leads an army that takes over and destroys a alien world that is seen by dean on the TV , explaining the scene in the final film of him telling Hogarth the giant is dangerous. also In the original, Hogarth finds the Giant's hand watching the TV, showing an advertisement for Maypo Cereal. Director Brad Bird initially wanted an ad for the Disneyland attraction Tomorrowland. Disney would not not grant clearance to use this footage back 1999, when the film was originally shown. Disney allowed the footage to finally be used when Brad Bird directed the film version of Tomorrowland , which was released the same year as the Signature Edition. The one i have is the The Ultimate Collector’s limited Edition number 1,230 of 15,000 that includes: - A letter from Director Brad Bird to the fans - Five Mondo Art Cards - Beautiful 32-Page Book - Collectible Iron Giant Figurine and the Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD Combo Pack

They named the kid "Hogarth" after "Burne Hogarth", a famous comics artist who also wrote and illustrated multiple technique guides for artists - just about every animator on the movie would know his name because they got his books. The man also drew the first, most famous Tarzan comics (based on the stories and novels by E.R Burroughs).

So, 'The Iron Giant' was the third of three animated films released by Warner Bros. in 1999 ('Quest for Camelot', and 'Cats Don't Dance' being the first two). Neither did well at the box office, and so it was decided that no marketing would be devoted to this film. (In my head, the people responsible for this decision are still looking for work to this day...) To add insult to injury, no category for 'Best Animated Feature' existed at the academy awards for 1999... A fun little easter egg; In 'The Incredibles' the plane Helen flies in the middle of the movie has the call letters 'India Golf Niner Niner', or IG99, as a nod to this movie.

I can attest to that! For most of my life, I rarely cried and always thought it was useless... UNTIL I saw the movie "Inside Out" (as an adult), and ended up expending a painfully huge amount of energy holding back tears (I was with 2 roommates and don't like crying in front of people). NO movie before that had EVER been such a strong tear-trigger for me, so I was quite surprised. But even MORE surprising was how, AFTER that movie was over, I realized I was CRAVING MORE TEARJERKERS. Given my historical aversion to crying, I thought "What on Earth...??!" So I did some research and found out, sure enough, feel-good brain endorphins often get released along with tears. So I guess given the fact I had held SO much back during "Inside Out", those would-be tears (and more of the endorphins) "wanted OUT" lol. I did proceed to seek out other tearjerker movies, but interestingly enough the desirable result was frustratingly rare... my only two most-cathartic reactions were a long 7 months apart lol. The seeking is worth it though... after one of those reactions I noticed for the entire next day I was in a warm / fuzzy / calm (and most importantly for ME, a NON-anxious) mood lol :P

for me i really like the mystery of what giant is capable of in the theatrical. it's much more creepy how he just has the 3 instances of locking onto weapons before coming one, rather than the scene showing the sillhouette with his tentacles, BUT it also makes a lot more sense as to why dean was so certain about him "being a gun that walks" as he saw it with his own eyes, and later had it confirmed when giant tried to shoot hogarth

Oh gosh speaking of "my allergies" that reminded me of my own reaction to "Interstellar" when I saw it "blind" for the first time-- I had NO clue it was going to be sad (yet I had already been "turned a tearjerker seeker [for the feel-good brain endorphins that often get released with tears], by the movie "Inside Out")... so I stupidly was trying to eat a salad during the MOST infamously sad scene of "Interstellar." I can get really into my food (and easily distracted) so I just suddenly started wondering "Why are my eyes watering and dripping off my nose?? OH it's because it's a sad scene. And DARN, I've half missing it, concentrating on this darn salad!" LOL.

@@LatetotheParty I've just started watching your channel, but I have to comment since this subject came up already: I've developed a real taste for emotional movies, despite how I started out: For most of my life, I rarely cried and always thought it was useless... I did proceed to seek out other tearjerker movies :P

My theory of why the giants survived is that. This species who created it obviously had advanced technology. Because the giant has particle weapons. These are energy based projectiles. So if they have the ability to create something like that, it's possible that they can create Shields as well. I think that the giant has an automatic force field that protects itself, similar to the aliens in Independence Day film.

People have theories about the Giant's dream: my own thought is it implies he wasn't an invader, he was invaded. Like the first scene of the planet is from his POV on the planet. Plus, the Giant's design I feel implies he's not intended as a weapon primarily; his standard design is "tall mechanical man" not "walking gun." If you were an invading force/the machine of one, you wouldn't give your weapon a form that says "not a gun, just big", give him a personality that allows him to override his program of "see weapon, neutralize threat entirely," or the ability to learn things that don't pertain to battle. As to the destruction of the planet at the end of the dream: last ditch effort to repel the invaders. And we've seen what his chest cannon can do, but clearly it's not powerful enough to destroy a planet. My theory: he was either a survivor of his planet sent to Earth to await the threat that destroyed his planet originally, or he came to ask for recruits to assist since if your home was destroyed, why come seemingly light years away to our corner of the universe? Surely there was something in between here and there. Of course, that's just my opinion. Still a beautiful movie that sadly got slept on

This movie is basically about self responsibility. Which means self control over your destructive tendencies. That love should be our default.

stories like iron giant, ET, lilo and stitch, ect are so emotionally impacting because its an alien life form that crash lands on earth and its very important that someone of good moral character meets them first and teaches them right from wrong. and all of these movies the innocence of a child shows these life forms that they can choose to be good if they choose to be. with the exception of ET of course he was good to begin with but elliot saves him from the bad government men that would have dissected and studied him. there's just something about a child making a strong bond with an unconventional friend and teaching them to be good even if the rest of the world is scared of them and would hurt them. i cry every time i see this movie because i think inside everyone of us we have all made mistakes in our lives and we want to choose to be good and the message is clear through this movie that you are who you choose to be.

About the film getting renamed to The Iron Giant, ironically it's pretty clear that director Jon Favreau ripped off shots from this film for his Iron Man film in 2008 - specifically the scene where the fighter jets attack him in the air on the way back from Golmera and a shot or 2 that is ripping off the Giant's weapons.
