South Park: Joining the Panderverse just released on Paramount+, and I’m sure it won’t be controversial at all and everyone will be in full agreement about the commentary!!! The special delves into a LOT of topics, including multiverse fatigue, diversity and pandering in Disney films and the future of AI and all of the industries it’s set to disrupt. Personally, I thought a lot about the special was funny! But I definitely think there’s going to be a real disconnect between how some people use its commentary, and the commentary itself. Which, ya know, is not new for South Park. So let’s go ahead and join the Panderverse.

Note - PC Principal calls Miles "Black Spider-Man," but Kyle and Stan call him "Miles Morales." PC Principal doesn't value him as a character beyond "diversity," while Kyle and Stan (often the voices of the show) value him as his own character with his own narrative.

@@alyssapinon9670 Yep. And using his name (Miles Morales) also allows Kyle and Stan/Matt and Trey to make their point absolutely clear to anyone who has an ounce of media literacy - they don't have a problem with diverse characters, or even diverse legacy characters, but taking an existing character (Cartman, often the voice of values opposed to the show, such as censorship, racism, and authoritarianism) and "putting a black woman in it" is just lazy.

Precisely the point. We all love good characters that happen to be black. They’re multifaceted individuals with depth and substance. Not black characters designed to fill a diversity quota and recite woke’ism like an NPC drone substitute for the writer.

I feel like it would be comical in a fucked up way if every character who were CHANGED to be a minority get BETTER representation than those who were ORIGINALLY a minority, considering that most fandoms would change a popular character’s race, sexuality, gender identity, disability, etc, and the characters that canonically fit any of these categories ends up pushed to the side for the headcanons. Got nothing against headcanons, but find this trend a little weird.

The term "Woke" cannot be used positively. The origin of the term as an insult comes from people claiming to be "woke" themselves on social media, this people said they were Woke on the "social injustices", what happened then it's that many of these social media accounts became echo chambers super kickly and as such the term woke is used to refer to obnoxious and close minded leftist thought and when something is accused of being "woke", it means it tries to pander to close minded leftists.

I'm so glad shows like South Park still exist. An elephant in the room: celebs like Zegler, the Kardashians alongside with these 'insta-fame-vain' people should've never been celebrated in the first place. An over privileged douchebags already famous, being promoted even further by other over privileged companies like Vogue, GQ, Jimmy Fallons of the world etc. 'look what's in my bag a brand new iPhone.' That level of vanity is obscene. The same people who, back in the day, considered anyone who was computer savvy or a gamer, or had a Myspace profile to be 'a loser'. Somehow they think if you can act you can automatically voice act, but it's such a different type of acting. Anyways it's a really cool line of work, thanks for sharing :)

South park killed it with the diversity absurdity in the media. They also did well to emphasize how pandering is different from actual representation. Also the fact the characters are exactly the same either in their normal form or in their multiverse form just goes to emphasize more the lazy approach that's behind pandering. Cartman is an asshole in both his male and female version exactly because nothing changes for him. Same as with token characters in comics, movies etc that are copies of existing characters with changed race, gender etc.
@Ashbrash1998

Is that because it's lazy or because they both serve the same role in the story? We had Nick Fury a white guy, be portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson a black man. Besides the benefit of having good films with his character (maybe not now lol) the character wasn't dependent on being a certain race to serve his role. His goal was to be the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., to bring the Avengers together and have a past service record of being a spy and such.

Like I said, it was only rumors but the only source I found contrary is just the director tweeting that it wasn't true, even though he later admitted that at least he showed it to Spielberg 7 times. This is also the same guy that lied that there wouldn't be time travel when the initial alleged leaks about the plot came out. It's also convenient that the alleged leak said that the movie would end with time traveling to the siege of Syracuse just like what happened in the movie, with Indy already dying from a bullet wound beforehand. The only difference is that in the leak Indy asks to die there and is left behind and in the movie he asks to die but is knocked out and the movie cuts to the present to awkwardly give him a happy ending. Like I said, it's all rumors, but I will trust the feds before I trust anything that someone in Hollywood says at face value.

They just used that as a 'stand in character for the beating' because they needed a character to play with and Kathleen Kennedy IS a funny choice. They did this for 2 reasons: When Cartman says Kathleen Kennedy, it just sounds funny and because she has single handed taken two franchises we all loved in, at the very least, the wrong direction. South Park does this alot...they have just chosen random villains as a stand in for a more widespread issue. South Park’s satire often operates as a Rorschach test - different audiences interpret the target of the satire differently. But interpreting it along the lines of “anything that bothers Cartman must not be being critiqued because Cartman is bad” is as simplistic as it’s opposite - the people who don’t get that the “Kathleen Kennedy as supervillain” mindset is also being satirised. Shallow, lazy, “Diversity”, as it is pracised by the likes of Disney, is absolutely the primary target of satire here.

7:19 It reminds me of the "Live Slug Reaction" couple. While Poe and Finn suddenly got similar-backstory-having girlfriends (instead of having one another), a brief sapphic kiss between two unnamed girls at the end of Rise of Skywalker happened, followed by a "slug". This special and your commentary really brought up the entire "relating to Cartman" situation. Like it says something if you think you're supposed to see him in the right. Protags aren't always right.

The problem is that the show also criticize Disney, and many people only use the ending to also praise it. This is my take: the american left and the american right are stupid, simple as. South Park clearly made fun of both of them but they didn't understood because they both want the show on their side. You can't deny that there are also a lot of people on the left that will blindly defend pandering in fiction and the Show criticized thst too.

Not sure why, but if something is being rebooted, and the original had a ginger character, that character will NOT be ginger, no matter how important their red hair is to their identity and iconography, that character is just arbitrarily replaced in the most half assed display of “diversity”. It’s happened like over 50 times now, it’s ridiculous.

It doesn't fully land because they are still "partially" pandering to violent psychopaths and racists. Aka, the white (lowercase emphasized) conservative Christian Right. The whole, "DuRr, BoTh SiDeS bAD", statement is not only cringe, it is actively HARMFUL coming from such influential figures. If South Park doesn't get with the program and aren't interested in actually making the world a better and more inclusive space, they shouldn't be on the air.

it's like because people are divided. the side that is losing ground in the culture war are trying to hold on to power. take sound of freedom for example. the conservative say liberals are protecting the pedo. and I think the have a point esp when u see that liberal outlet like rolling stones railed on that movie to run interference for a real story. a transgender democrats state rep from new Hampshire (Stacie Mary Laughton) being charged as a pedo.. she and her accomplice cut a deal which did not look good for the authorities because the kid pic went some where and they seem not interested in pursuing the case anymore.. wonder how many powerful democrats are involved. when the conservative start asking questions. they will be branded Q Anon. which is sad for the victim.

The funny thing is, as horrible as Cartman is (and is obviously meant to be), Matt and Trey have in the past said that they liked to use Cartman as a way to express a lot of their opinions on pop culture. Sadly, just because he made a few good points about Family Guy’s writing being lazy, a lot of people seem to think he’s also right to be a monstrous bigot. I guess good role models are hard to find.

I haven't finished the video but my initial thoughts are that people who aren't part of marginalized groups often like to dictate how representation should happen while often ignoring how they react any time those "rules" are followed. They said in the episode that Miles Morales was a good example of diversity, which is weird because marvel fan HATED miles when he was introduced and they were being insanely racist. South Park pulled another man bear pig imo

@moosecannibal8224

I disagree, it's not them dictating how representation happens. They ask for representation and then it's given to them very badly, which is why things like Miles Morales turned out good because they didn't just make "spiderman but black", they expanded on what that concept would entail and gave you something fresh to enjoy that was still familiar enough to be comfortable, and paired that with the representation as well. It's not about the reactions of people on first release, it's about the actual substance of the media, and time proves a better critic on that than first impressions do.

I don’t know for sure but I think many Marvel fans didn’t like Miles in the comics maybe… Because every single superhero fan loves the Spider-verse version of Miles. No matter what side of politics they’re on. And that’s what South Park was praising too, the Spider-verse movie version of Miles.
@moosecannibal8224
@moosecannibal8224 7 ай бұрын
Also I'm not gonna lie, I didn't hear much bad things about Mile Morales on release anyways, I feel like that statistic was made up to support your argument, or that you greatly exaggerated it for the same reasons, but I don't have energy to bother proving that, if I'm wrong then I'm wrong.

Yup the comics Miles was disliked a lot its why all of his runs get canceled before they were finished as he was part of a big push change the races and genders of many of the main characters. It's how we got Asian Hulk and Female Thor. They did terribly and t wasn't until the spiderverse movies where the public started to like Miles. And like everyone said that's because he wasn't "Spiderman but black" he was his own character with an interesting story.
