In this episode we drop you down into an Iroquois Village to live as one of the Haudenosaunee may have lived, before European contact.

In Northern Maine, where my wife grew up, you got time off from school for the Harvest and they had festivals and such to commemorate the week or so of time off that the children helped the adults bring it in. Dunno if they still do Harvest break or not.

I'm an Oklahoma Cherokee and I'm loving the info on Iroquoian culture. Anyway you could do a Cherokee series/video? Would consider donating

False faces and floating heads are two totally different things. False faces are a mask society and with out getting into too much detail are good and used for healing and in ceremonies. Floating heads are bad spirits that eat people and such. Great podcast though! Really enjoying listening.

Putting religious traditions aside, this episode sounds exactly like a Hutterite colony.

Clans are the reason why fathers didn't raise their own children. The mothers uncle's acted as fathers to her children. Men didn't choose their wife. It was the clan mothers who decided marriages. Usually they paired a young man to an older woman. That way a woman and her family were assured of protection and food resources. The young man benefitted by learning the ways of their nation.

I always wondered why they wore wigs. Never thought it might have something to do with lice.

Just glosses over the communism by not calling it such.

Marx studied Lewis Henry Morgan work on the Iroquois when developing his theories, i suppose they are an example of Proto-communism, although i would argue that label would be anachronistic. The Iroquois are a document influence on Marxist thought.

Communism didn't exist then. The colonies forming a federal govt were based on the Iroquois confederacy. Hence trade and defence were the original reason for the federal govt. Is that communism? If that's what you are looking for and how you wish to perceive the world. Communism has never worked.

Yes now they have the same clans, this is part of the mechanism of the Haudenosaunee the continual overlapping of connections, but before confederation this does not appear to be so, one remnant being the distribution of peace chiefs between nations on the grand council, which many believe indicated the number of clans each nation had, as it does not appear based on population, as collectively each nations chiefs are equally part of the consensus making process, although roles vary.
@theotherstatesofamericahis52126 ай бұрын
Of course they shared clan names not every nation at one point had every clan
