Hi, this is Mark and I want to tell about an EPIC EVENT Sunday afternoon!
Wayne scheduled an event on Sunday morning to clean the beaches along the Northrop area of the American River Parkway before they flooded. Illegal camps have been removed before waters rise. As Wayne and I were out planning his event, I asked if we could clean the island. The river was high all summer so it was not accessible by foot. NOW WAS OUR ONLY CHANCE. We had cleaned the island 3 times in years past. With low water, we have always been able to haul trash across by foot. This time we needed another plan.
We figured that if we could get a line across the channel, we could ferry the trash off the island. I had an old raft I found in the river and used previously before using Roland’s famous USS Minnow. It was easily transported in a wagon and inflated on site. My plan was going perfectly, except that everyone headed to the island, leaving just 3 of us to figure out how to get the ferry line run, haul all the sh** (trash) across the rushing river and up the effing steep hill. Rain and slippery slopes made it all exciting. We had no idea all the work that was happening across the water, except for the never ending 17 boatloads of trash.
We all had a fantastic time making Sacramento’s “Jewel” SHINE for us all to enjoy. I am so proud of my friends at River City Waterway Alliance! We are all eager to do whatever we can do to make change, along and in our waterways.
I really want to thank Wayne. What would this area be like without him. ONE PERSON has made a huge difference for years, in a very devastated section of our parkway. ONE PERSON inspired 20 others to make a bigger difference. And we did.
Sunday afternoon, 9 soggy volunteers, already tired from the morning cleanup, had a blast and removed about 5,000 pounds of trash, preventing it from floating downstream.
Volunteers Make It Happen! 💚
