''the sea always decides'' that made my arms get goosebumps. too true. I grew up in a very isolate town in newfoundland, people dying at sea was far too common. In a newspaper article i read regarding our town from the 1940s we lost 40 men in one year on seperate instances. I come from a place called lamaline with translates to the devils land. Lots of ice burgs and under water rocks mixed with the rough atlantic ocean is no joke. The titanic sunk roughly 400km off the coast of us.

Anyone taking the ferry to the Magdalene island from Souris , Prince Edward Island would have seen the house where I grew up. It's the lighthouse in Souris, my dad was the light keeper there for many years.

I have never been much of a smoker or should I say toker but I luv growing it which I have done since the late 70s in fairly large amounts and before they tighten the borders they used to have what they called a suitcase toss lol where you would toss a suitcase full of pot over the border and they would toss you back a suitcase full of money or back in the day when everybody loved BC bud they taught toss you back the equivalent amount in cocaine LOL and it was 1 for 1 one ounce of Bud for one ounce of coke back when it was good LO. Ahh the good ole days

Leonard was my neighbor growing up to his storys was amazing such a great soul. he had this bed of roses in his yard that he told me stop by everyday after school to pick the nicest one out for your mom. alway a new artifect to show about old ships miss him every day

What a wonderful program I once met a fellow from cape Breton his father and uncle would go camping by the sea in an undisclosed location and search for treasure in potholes on the beach at low tide taking turns with a rope tied around their ankles using a tin pail to scoop out the gravels he claimed they would find gold and silver coins as we as amazing artifacts I loved the stories he would tell me he were very convincing

what struck me was the passion of the artisans that made fantastic items from the shipwrecks..the model ships..incredible, as in the pens..this isn't your routine shipwreck video..shows the people who live to explore their heritage..just a great video..thank you to all who produced and were involved..

THANK YOU! Great documentary on my islands. Finally a documentary that shows some history and interesting facts instead of just showing landscape to attract tourists. Loved it. By the way, "Sophie la ptite misère" (the baby found in a lifeboat) was my great great great great grandmother!

It was interesting to hear some people mention Leonard in the present tense, while others mentioned him in the past tense. It seemed obvious by the end, that he has passed. RIP leonard, I would have loved to hear his stories. I'm kind of surprised his passing wasn't mentioned or memorialized, a shame. Cheers from Maine

Fantastic documentary! I loved hearing the Québécois language. What a rich and exiting history the island has. You can tell the current residents are quite proud of it. The graphics and music at the end are just beautiful!

As sad as it is that these lovely creatures were slaughtered for resources, if they had survived, the islanders would have lost the use of their own beaches. The disregard for animal life which mar the memory of those in the past is equal to the disregard for human life which mar the legacy of those of the present.

What a fascinating historian, archivist and cartographer Leonard was! To have amassed such a magnificent archive of shipwrecks is quite unparalleled! His passion and wealth of knowledge lives on, inspiring newer generations to follow in his boot prints to expand and preserve the knowledge base.

Great documentary, nice to see familiar faces, Renald a Fernand Cyr, Mario Cyr. My ancestors The Chiassons first settled around 1770 in Bassin on the south shore of the islands. Jean Chiasson was part of the Acadians that came over with Gridley to hunt the Walrus in 1765 and his younger brother, Amant and 3 of his sisters, came shortly after. Amant is my Geat, Great..... grandfather. From a Madelinot living on Vancouver Island

I'm from quebec, and everyone here knows about the magdalen islands (they're known for being a beautiful place to visit), but that's about it. I never knew it was a hotspot for shipwrecks! Very fascinating. Funny thing, I actually didn't realize this was about the islands in my province, because we always refer to it in french as îles de la madeleine, so it didn't register to me at first until they mentionned the saint lawrence river

Majestically magic in its own way. I think they should of mentioned the area the compass bearings get altered. Loved visiting the place to see family, hi to my cousins ! Russel & David Clarke !

That was a truly beautiful documentary. I must say its passion for the subject shines. The human stories are an example of the role luck and determination have on our lives. The use of the bounty of the sea reminds me of what Theodore Roosevelt said "Do what you can with what you have, where you are."

Seals, walruses, whales and other animals in the area were a lifeline for humans at that time. They hardly even came to think that hunting could be fatal to animal species. Nor do I think they would have even been able to bring whole species out of the area. Sad it still is.

Leonard was such a character, we lived on the island for 2 wonderful years in my twenties and we used to pick strawberries for him. He would invite us into his home and talk for hours, we would have lobster paste on toast with tea, I'll never forget him! What an interesting and hospitable chap:)

uncle leonards greenhouses were a huge hit. of course it wasnt so much the houses as it was the plants he grew therein. he liked to spend all day in there. then he would stagger out surrounded by a spooky sea fog. he would walk to the shore with his metal detector. then stand still for hours just moving it back and forth in one spot. one day he came in shouting that he had gold. i rant up to him and said what kind! coins?! he just paused and said..... acapulco!

Yeah it is my theory that the Magdalene islanders pumped this music out which caused so many shipwrecks. People were driven to the shores to kill themselves to shut their horrible sounds from their ears. The documentary uses their music as the soundtrack.

There’s a crime novel set on the Magdalen islands, “Entry Island” by Peter May. It also delves into the story of the Scottish people forcefully moved to Quebec, through the eyes of a fictional character from Outer Hebrides.

I see remnants of what looks like Square timber destined for Europe of which the majority came from the port of Quebec. The majority of that timber came from the Ottawa River and its tributaries as well as the Great Lakes through Garden Island near Kingston. Great presentation.

The Outer Banks of NC is alot like this... the ocean, dunes and shipwrecks; some of which lie partially exposed on shore. Visit in October. It's much less crowded. Ocracoke, where they're excavating the wreck of the Queen Anne's Revenge. Approximately 3,000 wrecks have occurred in the last 500 years or so.

This was fascinating and so well put together, love the artwork and music, some of the underwater shots of the wreck would’ve been cool with just the sound of the natural environment. Really good, thankyou

This did NOT go in the direction I thought it would, but I was fascinated anyway - and I want to visit this place! And PEI and so many places up there! Except for the bit about exterminating the walrus. That bit reminded me that our species tends to be a BLIGHT on the earth!!
