The original Greek sirens were supposed to have beautiful voices that induced madness in men, that sometimes crash their ships and others jump for them and swim to the rocks to drown a be eaten by the sirens. However they were not in anyways beautiful, if you see them without hearing their voices, they were rather ugly bird like monsters.
@arthas640
@arthas640 2 жыл бұрын
There are theories that these stories started out in a single location and spread out since the mermaids are based off the ancient Greek Sirens and there are similar stories in the Middle East and India. The Sirens are from the Odyssey and no one is even sure how old it is since Homer wrote it in the 8th century BC but some people think he merely strung a bunch of existing stories/legends together using Odysseus as a main character, so it could be far older then just 2800 years. The Greeks did have a vast network of traders that spread their cutlure far and wide with a Greek kingom existing as far east as northern India and there are even depictions of Greek hoplites on ancient Han graves, the Terracotta army was likely inspired by Greek art styles, the Yin-Yang symbol first appeared on a hoplites shield, and China's military horses were descended from those originally brought to Bactria from Greece (supposedly in turn descended from the horses used by Alexanders Companion Cavalry). Japan in turn drew much cultural influence from China so its possible thats where they got this from.

In Hindu scriptures, they are called Yakshini. Just like their male counterparts Yaksha, they also possess magical powers of shapeshifting, hypnotism, teleportation and granting materialistic wishes. They are benevolent for those who have strong self-control and virtuous personality. But for perverts and people with weak souls, they are ultimate cannibals who squeeze all the flesh out of their prey.

@@prumyta Your query is result of popular misconception because of co-wife relationship between Kaikasi (a Rakshasi) & Devavarnini (a Yakshini). Let me clear it. Rakshasa was a mortal species just like humans. They attained supernatural powers by years of penance. Yakshas are demigods. Such island of all women is called yi-aer-do(이어도, 離於島) in Korean folk legend. It is something like Heaven or paradises where male fishermen go, afterlife if dies in the sea or reach alive if shipwrecked. The legend is based on a underwater rock 150 km south of Jeju island, Korea. Nowadays, marine research base is built on it. The women are not demon, but young female, longing for husband candidate. Because they hardly produce boy (son), but mostly girl (daughter) and so many males there gone missing while fishing in the sea. So it become mostly female island and they want male to come from main island.

I've heard a similar story to that a few times, where "mermaids" or "amazons" are looking for men to breed with because they either only or just mostly have daughters so they need to bring in human men to keep their species going. In a few of the stories I've heard the men get killed afterwards or get kept as slaves but in others the men decide to settle there and live with their wives and daughters.

It's a shame more sponsors dont pay extra to have creators actually put effort into their sponsorships like this. Too many sponsors just hand a famous KZfaq star a script and some cash and tell them to start reading, I've seen some channels that just play the same sponsorship clip in every video. Linfamy keeps me watching through every sponsorship simply for being entertaining and creative with his sponsorships. Shadiversity did the same with his video on Brigandine armor, a sponsor gave him some free armor and he loved it so much he did a full review of it and i ended up checking out their site because of it.

I was wondering about that myself. The writing of the Odyssey goes back to about the 800's BC, Buddha lived about 400 years after that, and then Alexander of Macedonia conquered the Indian Subcontinent not too long after the death of Buddha (about 70-80 years). So it is possible that some of Buddha's early followers (second or third generation Buddhists) also heard stories from the Greek soldiers that were occupying India for a time.

Cyclopes and Laestrygonians ate people. Sirens’ song forced sailors to fell into the sea drowning themselves. Circe was a witch turning men into swine. Calypso hosted Odysseus until he felt almost prisoner. There are definitely common points between the Odyssey of the Greek antiquity and the Japanese stories of sailor daemons.

"Rasetsu" is also the name of a supernatural-romance manga series...and the name of its heroine. Which I'm guessing either spelling of would make life a bit hard on her. (I see that "religious men blaming women for their lack of self-control" is not limited to Western culture...not much of a surprise there.) Also, it's nice to see a VPN sponsorship where the ad read is entirely focused on the thing that VPNs genuinely do.

There could be a possible truth to women being extremely sensual that they seem like demons trying to seduce you lol, cause I remember that from my own culture, in islands near Japan and had a lot of connections/trade with it since BC, it's actually really encouraged to have a lot of sex from both men and women, so in return, men enable it and women do a lot of it. This unfortunately lead to a lot of ideologies that people _should_ want it, ie. forcing a couple that got together to make a child immediately, and sometimes even refusing that people didn't want it, saying they're possessed or unnatural to not want having sex. So the extreme conservativism was probably an intense reaction from that intense practice. Historical Japan was also a lot more patriarchal than what most people think, it's kinda shocking how sexist it can reach for people whose culture was mainly about discipline.

@@user-wn3wv5bx5e looking at japan today its still very sexist hell its even more sexist then the catholic Philippines actually all east asian countries are more sexist then the catholic Philippines now that i think about it weird though i guess i can chalk that up to the fact that pre colonial Philippines was alot more equal and progressive about its beliefs on identity gender and ect then say japan china or korea ironic how the poor country embodies the progressive ideals that you expect from a rich country though to be fair you might aswell consider the country part of the west i am just rambling now

@@augustuslunasol10thapostle Japan did idolise a lot of Western countries, going as far as adapting ballroom etiquette and celebrating festivals that are celebrated in other countries, such as the Sweden thing. I'm not sure about the entire East Asia, but I do know that Japan was a fan of European countries. Take that as you will as it did impact Japanese culture. And I wouldn't really want to call it progressive, in fact conservatism was the new and progressive thing back in the day. And again, it isn't as if acknowledging genders automatically means it's good, they still force people into marrying and having sex, and there were massive politics and racism between those islands. The whole reason why the battle of Mactan happened was because Magellan wanted to impress another datu by defeating Lapu-Lapu with Spanish technology.

In a lot of epic adventure stories, everything from The Odyssey to Journey to The West and even to stories like The Wicker Man, it seems like there's either an Island, Town or Tribe of women who either completely populate an area or ultimately just have dominion over a people or territory. They're usually portrayed as wanton, constantly horny and coveting men for sex/breeding stock/marriage and often having an ulterior motive that usually involves cannibalism in the end. I wonder how much of this involves historic tribes (we know that in prehistoric Europe and Asia cannibalism was often practiced in the same regions that produced notable stone Venus Figurines,) or if it's more to do with the psychology of Patriarchal/Pastoral civilizations that inhabited everywhere from the Steppes of Central Asia to the Caucasus to the Near East. These civilizations obviously came into contact with India, even colonizing parts of the sub-continent, and I wonder if they also left a mark on East Asian civilizations through conquest/oral traditions/religious conversion. I guess the more we find out the more questions we have. Or maybe an island full of women who want nothing more than to fetishize, fuck and dote on a man is a really hot idea, even if they might want to eat him in the end too.

Very interesting, seems as if the Indians, Japanese, as well as the ancient Greeks knew a kind of siren. Even the mention of bird-like beings matches the oldest descriptions from Greek mythology. Only in the later retellings were the sirens described by the Greeks as beings similar to fish or mermaids. Perhaps there is more to the myths than is realized. For my part, I always thought it extremely questionable that the Iliad only took place in the Mediterranean, because even an amateur seafarer could not get lost there for decades.

This is the best commentary I’ve ever seen about American’s lack of geography knowledge (7:02). Even though I’ve never met an american in my life, as a Bolivian myself who lives in Brazil (aka other country, same continent) and even they don’t know anything about the country, it’s common knowledge to assume other countries don’t know what even “Bolivia” is.

When I hear a story like this and think back to various stories of cannibalism by imperial troops during WWII and then that Japanese guy who killed and ate a gal back in Belgium a few decades ago, it makes me think that the Japanese have a very different take on cannibalism than Western society. The guy wasn't even locked up when he made it back to Japan.

There are theories that these stories started out in a single location and spread out since the mermaids are based off the ancient Greek Sirens and there are similar stories in the Middle East and India. The Greeks could have gotten the story of the Sirens from somewhere else or invented it themselves. The Sirens are from the Odyssey and no one is even sure how old it is since Homer wrote it in the 8th century BC but some people think he merely strung a bunch of existing stories/legends together using Odysseus as a main character, so it could be far older then just 2800 years. The Greeks did have a vast network of traders that spread their culture far and wide with a Greek kingom existing as far east as northern India and there are even depictions of Greek hoplites on ancient Han graves, the Terracotta army was likely inspired by Greek art styles, the Yin-Yang symbol first appeared on a hoplites shield, and China's military horses were descended from those originally brought to Bactria from Greece (supposedly in turn descended from the horses used by Alexanders Companion Cavalry). Japan in turn drew much cultural influence from China so its possible thats where they got this from.
