Great conversation. I had an interesting time listening to Furius, one detail after another, describe from childhood and family type (farm and all) my exact upbringing too. It took me a couple bio drops to become aware of the Australian mirror to myself.

13:50 FWIW the German "Gymnasium" is and was a false friend. It was an elite prep school (and now it is the more academic track of high school but much reduced in elitism, so that about 50% of students go there, it was less than 10% around 1900 and around 30% around 1990). Academic fencing was done by university student fraternities in the 19th century (and rarely even today). And there were sports clubs as well since the 19th century but sports was a core part of German (elite) schooling unlike in the British elite public schools. So I am not quite sure what Ferro has in mind because I don't think that "Greek" ideal of Philosophy, Poetry and sports in one educational institution or closely related to each other hasn't really a strong tradition in Germany (compared to the sports tradition of British and US schools).

This guy needs to explain things more thoroughly. 😀🤣
