You can put them in a really large pot which gives the tree the impression it's in the ground, grows like it but you can still move the large pot around till the tree is happy

You certainly can, so long as you progress up the pot sizes slowly 👍

And yes my back Garden is clay soil and my Bloodgood loves it. I was very surprised at the grow rate in the last 3 years. It wasn’t much thicker than a few twigs when I planted it. Now it’s 2/3’s the height of the fence

Thanks for the good suggestions. I’m in agreement as to allowing some of the one, two, three gallons first develop in pots before plantings

I love watching your videos. May I ask how long acers can stay in pots? I really like them but don’t have space in the garden.

Hi there and glad you’re enjoying the content. The answer is indefinitely really, every few years they will need a bigger pot or root pruning, but I have seen examples decades old 👍

Yes thanks, Carl. I'm a maple addict with about 57 of them all in pots. What advice do you give about compost for repotting now in view of the peat free advice which so far I have disregarded aa my peat based composts have been so successful.

Compost wise I have always used a 50/50 mix of John Innes no. 3 and ericaceous compost. Never been an issue for me either, apart from it hangs on to moisture well, so great in the summer but not wise to over pot. From speaking to growers the only thing they really hate is alkaline soil. Thanks for posting, Carl

Hi, is this (may) a good time to plant into the clayish ground? I keep hearing contradictory advice re Spring! What drainage material do you recommend? Really appreciate all your resources thank you ☺️

In my opinion I have no issue with planting now, as the weather here in the Uk seems to be getting dryer. I may in fact be planting a tree myself soon, but do advise planting a tree that’s 3-4 years old and a bit more established. I have fairly clay soil, so I will put a couple of inches of pebbles under the root ball, making sure the final height is just above ground level. No doubt I will do a video on this 👍

Thank you! I'd love to know where the concern about traumatising the roots by potting this time of year come from.. surely it can't be worse than being shipped! Really appreciate your reply and look forward to that video, thank you!
