During the early 2000s, racing games were experiencing a revolution. Gone were the European Exotics that defined the scene during the late 90s. In were the Japanese cars and tuner culture, in no small part thanks to the success of Fast and The Furious. If there's a single game that can define this shift, is Need For Speed Underground, released in November 2003. However there's another game that was released around the same period. Made by a Japanese studio, with different influences, they created a racing experience that hasn't been replicated or beaten, even to this day.

I get the weird feeling that the reason there's no civilian traffic in the game and, instead, just race official vans might have something to do with some of the car companies in this game, particularly Toyota, not wanting their cars associated with illegal street racing, whereas the previous games in the series only had lookalike cars with no official licensing so Genki was free to have the cars racing in traffic.
@YellowbirdYT
@YellowbirdYT Жыл бұрын
Yes, the Genki vans act as traffic. However the studio couldn't openly admit TXR3 being a street racing game. The highways are supposed to be "closed circuits" which is hilarious when you think about it.

@@YellowbirdYT It's the same in Kaido Battle, except no traffic at all. That series actually brings more background to it and it's something along the lines of being 20xx and cars no longer being used (or being self-driven) and the roads are basically unused so they become official race tracks during the day and "street racing" at night, something like that, it's been a while since I last played them. Actually now that I think about it it's similar to the manga MF Ghost.

In my honest opinion、the txr series has been a solid game for car enthusiasts, from the shutoko type games that involve highway racing, in which i see it as a nfs competitor. And there are the kaido games, which involve mountain pass point to point style racing, for example, my favorite kaido game, kb3 is in my opinion one of the best racing games on ps2, and i almost see it as a competitor to Gran Turismo 4.

I mean, the fact that the game accounts for rear wing giving aero stability, parts changing the weight of the car, tyre wear and temperature, different weather conditions actually having a difference on which type of tyre you'll chose is the reason I whole-heartedly love this game since I started playing it back in 2004. A long held sentiment of mine is: TXR series is literally Dark Souls of racing game. - simple repetitive gameplay loop that punish you when you f'd up, but satisfying when you pass a big hurdle (a boss) - some memorable and hard bosses - gameplay mechanics that the game never bother to explain and secrets like N/A car nitro or HUD color change in TXR2 - obscure quest requirements (wanderers) - you upgrade stats to progress and make builds - majority of the story comes from text descriptions One thing I have to disagree from you is car sound. It was a massive step up from Zero and at the time this game was released, Gran Turismo cars still sounds like lawnmower. It was arguably one of the best sounding racing game at the time. Also fun fact: the roads are laser scanned from the real highways so it's very close to the real thing. PS: also the livery editor is actually pretty powerful, it's just very non-ergonomic. In theory you can make the most detailed thing in existence, but you'll need to spend hours if not days.
@YellowbirdYT
@YellowbirdYT 2 жыл бұрын
I would say that's pretty accurate. While the gameplay might look similar at first glance, each battle can have a different outcome. By the end of the game, each team is a threat and can keep up with you or outright outpace you. Of course, if they don't crash! That sense of danger, of not knowing the type of opponent that awaits is something I never seen or felt in another racing game. That's valid, I might have been a bit brief with my description of car sounds. To me at least, they didn't stand out. But they don't sound out of place, something which happens in GT. I do agree with them being way better than Zero's (which I should keep playing, maybe one day I'll make a video about that one, too) Fun fact. It took me an hour or so to make the entire livery for the FC RX-7. I wish it was a bit easier to use, to think a tool like this was already in a PS2 game is surprising, anyway.
@K0Y0I_sis
@K0Y0I_sis Жыл бұрын
One thing about the laser-scanned courses, be it touge or the shutokou: off-cambers and undulations will upset the car's balance depending on which line you take. And personally I have no problem with the handling model, i am able to bend the car's handling model to my will by bringing over my experience setting up cars IRL. Pay attention to the LSD settings, most people overlook this crucial part when setting up a car in games.

I recommend Tokyo Extreme Racer Zero over Tokyo Extrem Racer 3. While 3 has better handling, licenced cars and better grapics, the whole game is set on a pseudo-legal racing setting where every car in the "traffic" is a yellow Van with racing logos on it which kills the immersion. Zero on the other hand has Trucks, Taxis, Construction Vehicles with emergency lights, random cars having a road breakdown - it's much mor livelier and therefore a bit more challenging due to the traffic. Also Zero has way more cars available ranging from fictional JDM cars to BMW, Porsche and even Dodge Vipers
@SteveBrandon
@SteveBrandon Жыл бұрын
Those yellow vans are supposed to be track official (race marshal) vans but I always thought that they kind of look like airport shuttle vans. The game feels a bit surreal to me, racing on empty highways in one of the worlds biggest metropolitan areas (plus two other cities) with absolutely no civilian traffic. I haven't played any of the others (not counting the Drift games) but I'd definitely pick up Zero if I saw it at a thrift store.
@whatheck6709
@whatheck6709 Жыл бұрын
@@SteveBrandon I heard the reason why they have those vans in 3 is because Genki tried desperately to get Hondas licensed in TXR3 but in the end, the attempt failed, they weren't convinced that the setting was on a closed circuit. Ironic because Hondas are now available in Forza Horizon and NFS but back in the day, they did not condone any illegal type of racing. Maybe another thing too, that TXR3 had Osaka which was the home of many of the infamous Honda racing gangs in Japan (No Good Racing, Temple Racing, etc)
@SteveBrandon
@SteveBrandon Жыл бұрын
@@whatheck6709 I thought it was mainly Toyota that's allergic to street racing games but maybe also Honda is against them as well? I know all of the major Japanese auto manufacturers are in the TXR Drift games but there's no traffic in those.

And I thought GT3's GT Mode was too open-ended from the get-go...this is on another level. Funny enough, I only 100% this game a few years ago for this exact reason. I had like 3 different save files at 99% for over 10 years before I actually got a game shark (or similar) and used the money cheat to 100% one of them. Wasn't there also a glitch with the odometer. I remember I had to drive for sooo many hours before I could unlock engine swaps - so much so that I generally only swapped car once at the begining of the game otherwise I wouldn't unlock it before completing the main game.

The reason why NFS UG2 resides in our hearts is coz of great tasteful menu and in game music, multi diversity cars... muscle, imports and even SUV..in Carbon nfs.. exotics too..and in mods, you neons of all sorts, nitrous purges and all sorts...you can make your car as fancy as you saw in 2F2F.. So by adding different options, mods, music, cars they hit every guy's heart...in cars also they brought some french, german legend like golf GTI and so..still to this day NFS UG2 always installed on PC like its essential part of my OS..

The only bad thing I saw about TXR3 in my opinion is the slow advance in the game progress and the difficulty balance. Apart from that it's an amazing game and "Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift 2" is to this day my favorite racing game for PS2, that is a hell of a game.
