@MrYfrank14 the rope will act as a stabiliser and keep the harpoon going straight as it will counteract the nose heavy nature of it. It won't make it fly further, but it will stop it twisting in flight so the harpoon should impact on the barbed end rather than sideways

Firing the harpoon gun at long distances the line helps keep the harpoon stable from tension being placed on the line. Hey Scott the Harpoon needs to have the string attached to it for it to work correctly. Its because like the fletching on a arrow the string adds drag so the harpoon doesn't nose dive & hit it semi broadside. You'll have better results from farther away. Just FYI. Love the content best part of me day!

The water and string help keep the bolt from spinn8ng out of control I've shot spear fishing from pretty good distances and they travel pretty straight in water very rarely do they spin only a couple of times the prongs on the front opened and made it shoot to the side a bit . I'm pretty sure the rope is supposed to help stabilize the harpoon a little. The spooling out of the rope makes a bit of a drag on the tail of the harpoon, meaning it'll want to fly straighter than without the rope. That's at least what I believe is the secondary function of the rope besides reeling in your catch and not losing your harpoons to Davy Jones's Locker.

It's keyholing at distance because you're not using the string. Where normal arrows have feathers or vanes to stabilize the arrow, harpoons like this, or the ones I use for bowfishing, are stabilized by the backwards tension of the line as they feed outwards towards the target. It'd probably send a harpoon at least 25 yards easily if it's stabilized.

The Navy and Coast Guard used to use shoulder fired line throwing guns made from Springfield 30-03s. Bore out the rifling, cut back the forward end of the stock, install a canister to hold the shot line, turn down the forward 18 inches or so of the barrel to a uniform outside diameter, remove front sight, and add a butt pad with some cushioning. I think the heaviest projectile for it was 18 ounces. I recall one situation where the gunners mate fired that 18 ounce projectile three time before one reached the beach.

I wonder if the chamber would fit a .357 magnum blank. Or if not how much powder you could put in a .38 special case before blowing the gun up. It seems like it would be more forgiving of overpressure than a regular gun with bullet in the case. I mean you're only dealing with gas and no bullet stuck in the case to push out through a barrel and that harpoon is getting blasted off before anything breaks.

Great job, those Martini rifles are some of the most versified rifles made. Seeing you're on the salt water side, look up "Signal Cannons", they were a brass cannon that would shoot a line out to aid boater/sailors in need where using a boat would take too long. (short version) I had made some 209 primer holders for a cannon at the Sussex County Life Saving Station in Delaware, but never got to see it work.

I think it's called a Lyle Gun. I had one for several years. The bore size fit a tennis ball, made for the US Coast Guard and was turned on a lath. At the mussel the thickness about 1.25" and at the other end about 2.25'. It didn't have a breach, one loaded black powder from the mussel. Being about 2.5 feet long it was made of two pieces, the steal barrel and the cast iron base. Total weight ~ 300lbs. The angle could be set at one of three angles and could be separated for transport. The pivoting point wasn't in the middle but at the rear of the barrel. Setting the tension of the bearings would allow just the right resistance to adjust the angle. I wish I sill had it. It had a placard of brass with all the U.S. Coast Guard serial number and other info on it. The whole thing was painted Coast Guard gray. First made to throw a line between ships at sea but was replaced with a shotgun looking line thrower & choppers. Most of them ended up as rescue line throwers shot from shore to a ship run aground. One was used at the mouth of the Columbia River, the boarder of Oregon and Washington States. Ships often ran aground on the bar. I found mine at an antique shop and sold it 5 years later to another antique shop. I paid $300 for it, cleaned it up like new then shot it till my divorce. Sold it for $300. It worked real well as a signal gun and that is what it was used for when the shop sold it. I was probably the last one to put a solid lead cannon ball in it. That's a scary story for another day. Great memories... :)

OMG that thing is awesome!!! I want a crossbow that can shoot bolts that are propelled the same way, but maybe they could accept 357 blanks too... and just shoot 357's without the bolt as well. Like a long 357 barrel, but the bolts are hollow and slide over the exterior of the barrel. So you can choose to shoot bolts or 357/38's. That'd be so freakin sweet.

Id love to see some harpoon zombie torso defense :) Since it basically a tube on a tube you could probably whip up some fun projectiles for it too as long as they are about the same weight, boxing glove, meat tenderizer tip, etc.

A Greener harpoon gun is briefly used in the equalizer 2 film to take out one of Dave York's henchmen (this ain't home alone scene). Greener made some great single shot 12 bores and single shot target rifles in the martini falling block action.

I'd say these are a solid 10/10 for zombies or aliens. Or could you possibly test that scene from fast and furious where they shot a harpoon thru a windshield and would it still have enough to securely lodge itself into the seat back?

the rope might actually add a "arrow flight" like effect, adding drag to the back might actually help it fly straighter.

Scott, you have influenced my dad way too much My dad won't stop mentioning watermelon time and how nobody likes eggplant But upon telling him about my idea for building a semi-auto tube-fed rifle chambered for .357 and .44 Magnum, he suggested it be scaled all the way up to .500 Nitro Expres... And I like that idea

Cool! We built some ammo for an original "kongsberg line thrower", harpoon gun made from a mouser. Guy said there was only a handful of originals, it used a something x44r blank. Can't remember exactly its been years, but that's cool to see you using a similar one!

If I didn't know any better, I'd say that's the actual rifle itself from the movie. Even the box it comes in is identical. Given how powerful it is, no wonder why Bruce was pissed off. Quint had himself a really great harpoon rifle.
