What's the biggest, most ridiculous, video game music tribute project anyone could make? Oh, I know, how about a big band + strings + percussion + soloists jazz medley of video game songs, all recorded live? Here it is.
❤️ I have to give a gigantic thank you to my Patreon supporters for providing me with the budget to make this project happen! This is what can happen with your support! If you're interested in supporting the channel for better videos, consider becoming a Patron! • • • bit.ly/supportinsane
This video will not be available for download on major music distribution platforms. However, downloads for all videos are available to my Patrons on Patreon!
Sheet Music: bit.ly/3EMZCge
I am so happy to finally be sharing this massive project! This all started out back in early March when Cristobal (Head Engineer) saw my Wii Music video with Emily (Violin Solo), and reached out to me asking if I’d be interested in ever doing a live session with a band. At first, my reaction was fairly neutral, but then I began to think… what’s the biggest thing we could possibly do with the resources available to us? And thus, The Jazz Video Game Medley was born. It’s a three-movement suite highlighting some of the best and notable video game music ever written. It shouldn’t be surprising that I’m extremely passionate about video game music, so this project was a dream come true for me. After about a month and a half of arranging, an intense 8-hour recording session, several weeks of mixing and video editing, I’m happy to present to you what I think is a crown achievement of my KZfaq career.
This particular movement of JVGM focuses on happy, triumphant themes from games. I was not surprised at all that this medley ended up being very heavily Nintendo-focused, as I think Nintendo has always been king when it comes to game music! Some of my favorite bits of this medley include the muted trumpet + string pizzicato in Green Hill Zone, the relaxing two feel underneath the Mario Bros. theme, the DK Island Swing Sax Soli, and the raunchy Bob-Omb Battlefield finale! If you’d like to study the score and follow along, the score and parts for this arrangement are available for free to view and download, just like always.
I have to give a huge thanks to everybody who contributed to making this project a reality. I am so fortunate to attend school at a place where so many skilled people are readily available, and the technology exists to support creative endeavors like this. This is my attempt at making the most of my college experience, haha!
Hope you all enjoy. See you soon with Movements 2 & 3 :)

Here's a little funny story that goes along with this video! If any of you remember the first insaneintherainmusic Jazz Challenge back in 2016, the winner of that contest was Maurice Soque! Maurice actually happened to be a Berklee student at the time! The grand prize from the first Jazz Challenge was supposed to be a collaboration that would get uploaded to my channel, and that never ended up happening. 3 years later, Maurice, is actually playing Tenor Sax 2 in this ensemble! I guess this is our collab??? Anyways, hope you guys enjoy the medley :)

I just figured it out. Movement 1: The Joy of Gaming - This movement represents many of the 1st video game themes you might’ve heard as a kid, giving off a nice, warm scent of nostalgia. These themes are also very easy to recognize, as many franchises here are very well-known. Movement 2: Press Pause - This covers some more relaxing/heartwarming music from many fan-favorite video games, such as Kingdom Hearts. Some people even cried a bit when these played, as they might’ve played during the resolution of the game, with an emotional end. And some are just straight up beautiful. Movement 3: Battles and Bosses - The Final Stand. This brings back many painful memories of a tough fight they’ve had with an odd force they weren’t aware of before. The struggle is high, and the odds seem entirely against them. But still, there is a glimmer of hope that they’ll get through alive.

I cried a little while listening to this. I have played almost every one of these games (sorry mega man, I’ll get to play you someday), and each one was definitely a joy to play. While they all have they’re frustrating moments (getting lost in Metroid, dying MANY times to a difficult platforming challenge in Donkey Kong, landing a critical attack that kills that shiny mareep you were trying to catch in heart gold, etc.), the feelings I have for them and the memories I have created with them are ones of joy. No bad things that could have happened in those games will ever overshadow the fact that I had fun while playing them. Thank you very much for making this happen. I’m very excited to see what you’ll do with the other two parts!

Wow, I'm a little too jealous of your childhood ;*) Always wished I could play those games in my childhood years before I lost that young gaming vibe. Pokemon Platinum and a Sonic game on the GameCube were the only highlights of my memories. My family never had much so I couldn't grind other games, but those 2 games really gave me nostalgic memories I can never forget. Thank you, insaneintherain :)

The fact that humans have not only evolved to create and play instruments but also code and play video games that allow for complete creative expression and illicit very specific emotions and images when the proper tunes play is a fucking wonder to behold and I marvel that we exist at all.
