Thank you for this wonderful documentary…… especially the interview. Brings back vivid memories of our farm 14 miles from the klein dorpie of Bethal where my ancestors settled in the late 19th century…… five brothers and a sister came from Lithuania…. Vilna & Kovno, via every port imaginable. The platteland not nearly as picturesque as Hermanus, but also boasted an algemene handelaar (Voortrekker Winkels…. Crude separate facilities for “nie-blankes” as was the post office, the hospital and every other building…. Also a bioscope owned by the gallant little Greek cafe owner. My grandfather built the first shul and community hall. I had friends in our vibrant Indian community (before they were forcibly moved as “nie-blankes” to the dreary outskirts of the town) and the beautiful little pink mosque gave me much aesthetic pleasure. My memories are therefore mixed, and especially marred by regularly witnessing chained prison labour gangs working potato fields during high season under terrble conditions ….the worst years of Apartheid…… I could go on (in Yiddish and/ or Afrikaans) but I want to again sincerely thank you for this gem. I’ve saved it in a special place…… Miss Jenny, plaasmeisie, midtown Manhattan.
