Next, the crew then discusses the hurdles that singers face due to the melodic style of Hip Hop being made (31:31). Also, Travis Scott offers to perform for free at Coachella (54:14), and Joe highlights a gruesome story involving a person with a mental health condition POTENTIAL TRIGGER WARNING (1:04:57). And finally, DaBaby gets trashed while performing at Rolling Loud (1:23:00), and MORE!

THANK YOU FOR THIS CALL!!! This call with Tank made a difference. Made clarity on what we need to compete. Been writing songs like that and had a hard time expressing musically. Male Rnb is definitely needed. We need those opportunities and change how we're treated. It confirms for me that, I still need to keep on going and make a change 💯

@@shesbaldbutiwould nah...the people only like what's being forced down their throats. If they played black love all day on the radio and tv and music awards shows then the people would want that too. I'm old enough to remember when black love ruled the air waves and let me tell you, people bumped that stuff out their windows like a Sir Mix a Lot album. I've never heard this new depression I'm so sad my relationship sucks music being blasted out of any car on the road. That tells me that people don't really like it. It's just that it's all there is to listen to.

@@jeromejenkins1733 the fact you don't hear it doesn't mean people don't like it, it means people don't want you to know they're sad. Likely because you'll judge them or look at them differently. And whether people want it or its being pushed is a chicken or the egg argument. Hard to know which is influencing which. Especially when labels push artist that never get hot and today you can listen to whoever you want whenever you want so it's harder for them to forcefeed you specific music. You set your playlist.
@shesbaldbutiwould
@shesbaldbutiwould 2 жыл бұрын
@@jeromejenkins1733 Thats not accurate,the younger generation,who are the main consumers of music, dont even listen to radio nor do they watch Tv they definitely dont watch whole award shows they may watch specific performances. Youre speaking of a time that is 30 years old,thats like comparing the 60s to the 90s,things change and time moves on. If you havent heard any of that music being played out of cars that probably means youre not around a lot of younger people that doesnt mean its not happening,cant define the wider world by your personal experience.

1:20:00 I've seen a ton of videos where either one or both parents of a murderer will profess their love to that person right there in the courtroom. I've always taken that in a few different ways. 1) The parent, sensing their own guilt, feel obligated to say the one phrase they might not have said often enough when their child was growing, and believe saying it on camera will make up for that fact. 2)The parent has conditioned their child to getting away with horrible things in the past, and is easily able to forgive such transgressions as them simply "acting out". 3) The parent, upon realizing that their child truly has a mental illness and perhaps unpredictable behavior, believes that they won't be given a second chance to say those words in the future; for fear that their child might commit suicide. And to answer Joe's point regarding whether or not pronouncing to others that you have "mental health issues" can act as a blanket defense for otherwise indefensive acts. No. If you know you have these issues and have not sought help, you are most definitely culpable. When a court finds someone "not guilty by reason of insanity" or that someone isn't "fit to stand trial", there's an obvious presumption that the person is simply unaware that they've done something wrong. They are not cognizant of their actions.

That's another problem...since when does R&B have to be sad to be a hit. It's like Al Green, Luther Vandross,and Freddie Jackson never existed. It's okay for R&B to be happy and have an up tempo beat be positive and still be a hit. In fact the greatest R&B songs ever made were the happy ones Example: Love and Happiness= Al Green Before I let Go=Frankie Beverly Almost all of New Edition was up tempo R&B Luthor Vandross=Bad Boys Almost all of Micheal Jackson's early songs before skin bleaching was up tempo happy R&B. In fact I'd argue that all this depressing break up music is the thing that's actually killing R&B.

01:23:05 I love Ish man. Like I understand Joe, Joe says the craziest wildest shit sometimes that I know he doesn't truly believe. But he's job is too create content so he has to do that sometimes. And he's so smart he can say something that he doesn't truly belive but still add some level of logic to it to make it sound convincing. Ish, on the other hand not understanding what Joe is doing, will chastise him every single time with actual logic to shut down any wrong Joe says. Ultimately, the dynamic between the two makes for great content. Absolutely love it

On the male R&B topic, I understand each person’s point of view. One thing I don’t like is their point about making music that sells, what is hot, what labels can market, and what plays on the radio. Who cares what is hot right now, what labels say will sell, what they’re doing in hiphop or what the radio plays. If your an artist, those things should be the last things you’re thinking about. Make good music that you like and that is true to you. I think that was Joe’s point. You can be vulnerable, be yourself and make great music. This is the internet era. Who gives a fuck what radio thinks or if they can market your image. Shit Rod Wave is one of the hottest artists out, and his image doesn’t scream music star.

Joe put the Mic on the ground in the middle of a rap battle because fans were booing. Now he's cool with bottles being thrown? That's a little hypocritical.

My push back to the male R&B convo would be that artists like Miguel have found a way to make art and also make music that appeals to today’s demographic and that’s the difference. I think that women are far more willing to take risks whereas the guys feel like it had to be this or that so to speak. I do agree that the music isn’t pushed as heavily but the guys in R&B have to find better ways to craft out images that are consistent with who they are yet relevant. I think that all of the R&B women know exactly who they are and they live in that 100% whereas the guys are trying to play a role and the listener today is really good at identifying authenticity, so if you’re making music that isn’t in line with who you really are it’s not going to appeal to today’s listener and that is where male R&B acts have to find a way to make some headway. Plus you can’t expect the sound of the 90’s and early 2000’s to appeal to these younger consumers. Miguel is a case study in how to make classic music , remain true to your soul roots and also find a way to remain relevant.
