This video shows you how to master one of John Mayer's most popular fingerstyle technique as heard on some of his classic hits such as 'Stop This Train' and 'Who Says'.
This technique can be learned in just 6 steps. The steps themselves are pretty easy to learn, but the difficult thing is keeping the pattern going.
This video breaks down all 6 steps and provides exercises and TABs so you'll learn how to use this technique on any song or chord progression.
Video contents:
00.00 - Intro and pre-step: Thumb Slap
06:56 - Step 1: Finger Pinch
10:03 - Step 2: Slap-Flick
15:26 - Step 3: Finger Pluck
21:31 - Step 4: Bass Note on Beat 3
27:56 - Step 5: Another Finger Pluck
34:41 - Step 6: Another Slap-Flick
39:34 - Loops with Different Chords
43:58 - Conclusion

Thank you so much for this amazing lesson. I’ve seen it many places on KZfaq and left feeling helpless. But, the way you broke it down into small pieces really made it so much more manageable. My first thought with a :45 minute lesson was that I wouldn’t have the attention span to get through it. Instead, I found myself going back to your different tabs and practicing the different parts. My slap/flick (the hardest part) still aren’t where I’d like them to be but I finally feel like with a lot of practice there is light at the end of this tunnel. And, for that I say thank you very much. Who says you can’t learn John Mayer!!😂😂

Thank you so much Toby! That was absolutely a fantastic lesson. Thanks to years of practicing Jerry Reed finger style rhythm it goes quite well to learn the John Mayer way of playing.

Yet another serious technique on an acoustical guitar that will take some serious practice. Still working on classical tremolo picking also, but this is heavy !! Thanks for the great video on the breakdown. Liked and of course will watch more of your videos. Thanks

I have to push pretty hard (or "slap" pretty hard) to get that low E string to hit the frets - maybe my strings are too high? What's the space between the string and the fret at that last fret? I'm comfortable messing around with my setup - maybe I have to lower my bridge a bit?
@fatkitty4207
@fatkitty4207 2 жыл бұрын
That might be the case, but also maybe lighter strings? I don't know I'm not an expert just saying :)

Yes, it sounds like your action could be a little high if it's a struggle to get the slap sound, have a look at truss rod adjustment before filing your saddle down though

for the finger flick, do you only use the pointer finger, or the finger that the string is associated with.

I agree with J W, John Mayer only uses the index finger, however, i find myself using the index and middle fingers when I play using the technique - it's whatever works best for you

I think we all have gotten very tired of that slap thumb technique. I compare it to a flat train wheel…around thump, around thump until you are blue in the face.

This acoustic guitar slapping technique is irritating and jarring and overused. Listen closely and you will notice it. After coaxing beautiful notes from the guitar...comes the slap slap sound. Maybe to use the technique sparingly, tastefully and in between only. John Mayer is a gifted and talented musician. Paul David too.
