@@kevinskiles2033 i'm so glad you've said that because he devilishly makes those references whilst claming all he's trying to do is just "help people" or specifically men to know themselves better, find a purpose or at least search for it...because some how he's with them (maybe he is who knows) on this journey, hungry for the quest of "truth" and "meaning". I'm onto him alrught, but millions all over the world aren't. A lot (not all) of his followers i've discovered are extremely damaged, suffer seriois mental health issues...he's preying on their vulnerabilities and it's quite sad. Why not stick to the "enlightenment" stuff, the personal development stuff? Because he's not stupid, he knows then that his messages won't gain traction...he would be labelled as partisan, his politics would be exposed. He's extremely covert in his dealings, deceptive, manipulative...he wants to come across as intriguing...it's all a baiting act to gain more traction and followers. @Roberto Biagio Randazzo Yeah but that's because of dumb videos like this where he's being logical and rational and they pretend otherwise because they don't like him. You're calling him a bigot because he calls sexual signalling like lipstick, high heels, whatever sexual signalling?, fuck off that's ridiculous. The reason people are so loyal to him and his brand despite its many flaws is videos like this where they speak nonsense for 30 minutes.

I've worked with men and women at all kinds of workplaces. I've worked with women that wear makeup and those that don't (I don't wear makeup myself). I've worked at places where women dress up and wear heels and places where the standard dress code involved wearing jeans and t-shirts. When I worked at Game Stop, I was the only woman on staff. Everyone wore jeans and polios except me. I wanted to wear miniskirts and leggings (I was going through a phase at the time). Absolutely none of my coworkers hit on me and I actually got the most respect from customers at that workplace. I know, gamers respectful towards women?! Yes, they were. Grandparents with lists from their grandkids looking for Christmas presents? Not so much. In contrast, when I worked at Tractor Supply, I worked with a mix of men and women and we all wore jeans, t-shirts, and hooded sweatshirts to work. No heels, no makeup. To this day, that's the only place I've ever been sexually harassed by a coworker. As soon as I told my boss, the coworker was immediately reprimanded and he never shared a shift with me again (which did mean cutting his hours as well). He was also told that if the boss received one more complaint about him (no matter what kind of complaint it was), he would be fired. Don was one of the best managers I've ever worked for. I hope he's enjoying retirement and that they gave him a great pension (unlikely, but he totally deserves one). Oh and the place I had to deal with the most sexism from customers is probably an even split between Tractor Supply and Home Depot - and it was always elderly men (almost always white, but occasionally an older Latino man would... um, let's say come on strong). Ironically, the Bosnians (identified by their accents) were pretty damn respectful and polite. But hey, you know how those Muslims are. They were probably faking it, right? Yes, that last bit was sarcasm.

Regarding Jordan Peterson more generally, I've watched quite a few of his college lectures and find these fascinating. I only discovered his other pro-masculinity 'public persona' a little later and, to be honest, couldn't reconcile the two for a while. I still enjoy the psychology lectures but I'm a good deal less enamoured with his more sociological ideas and harping back to the Bible as the fount of all wisdom.

Same here. I found his Maps of Meaning university lectures after googling anxiety-it’s causes and cures. I was having devastating panic attacks for the first time in my life and I needed help; Peterson’s lectures helped me tremendously. Then his political stuff was...umm...well, not great. But I gave him more attention because of how helpful the lectures were. I fell off after a while, and completely stopped listening after he said quitting smoking was evidence for god lol.

I think Peterson has slowly but surely lost the plot, the all meat diet is having an effect on his ability to be rational and ethical! When he was protesting pronouns and refusing to use the pronouns people wanted to be addressed by. I thought no more! He's not a particularly good academic and he's certainly pretty low down as a human being. He's currently shilling some video on KZfaq with Kermit the frog impersonator Ben Shapiro which should be the death knell for his career as it gives you the absolute certainty as to who he is and where his politics lie! Also referring to the Bible and Scandinavian countries is getting a little old! Change the damn record professor carnivore!

Exactly. But you know, if you're Jordan Peterson all you focus on is on the male experience of instant sexual arousal at the sight of a beautiful woman as opposed to understanding the woman experience. This is how he can get away with saying that the world does not discriminate against women, simply because he does not understand what women go through.

Jonathan Straka, No. That's not it at all. The sad truth is that most of these Peterson fanboys, like so, so, many of the alt-right/alt-lite/anti-"anything remotely decent"-types, are IT specialists and programmers (not unlike a certain James Damore). Most of these twats get paid more in a year than I'll ever make in my lifetime. What galls me about them, is that when you call-them out on their bigotry and their misogyny, they will happily accuse you of "being jealous" of their "success". As though "success" inoculates them against taking responsibility for their vile ideas and shitty behavior.

has anyone read bill c-16 (i think its called) that made peterson famous? it's very innocuous. i have no idea how he arrived at the conclusion that it was the compelled speech legislation he said it was. i suspect he was being intellectually dishonest in the way he represented it. i can't really see how anyone could interpret it how he did. then again i'm not a lawyer so... but go read it, it's very short. it's just a tiny amendment that adds trans people to a pre-existing list of groups it's possible to commit hatecrime against. doesn't even mention pronouns as far as i remember.

Holy shit, i just noticed the like dislike ratio and there being more dislikes than likes. Whats bizarre is that this was one of the most deep and profound breakdowns that i had seen about peterson at the time. This conversation was also where i first discovered contrapoints. The fact that a detailed and honest discussion about the implications of jordan petersons comments and his effect on his audience as a sort of father figure with sage-like wisdom in a time of deep confusion for many young people in a sort of oligarchic, technology infused global society could get such disapproval is an obvious indication that people do not want to engage in criticism of their idol, and that this largely emotional response that cuts to the core of many peoples beings is itself ironically having a chilling effect on the same free speech peterson claims to hold so dear. Before this conversation i was still grappling in myself why this guy had such a following and why it seemed so difficult to criticize the overwhelming message behind all the truisms he speaks, nonetheless i never liked the guy a whole lot because you can kind of unconsciously understand that there is something controversial, something constipated about what he is saying despite his popularity with young people.

I have been hearing lot of these stuff for some time now and I agree with all your criticism but one thing I almost never hear is that what Peterson is saying is offensive and deeply degrading to men. Not in a PC sense. If you accept everything you say is true what is the conclusion that we can draw from that about men? Men are people who have no control over our sexual impulses, we are basically unevolved barbarian waiting to attack anything that fancies our sexual desire. Yes make up, lipstick and high heels are sexual cues like million other things that all kind of people do everyday both men and women. They do it to get attention from people who they find attractive. How do you know if you are that guy? Just talk to them, if you are great, if not leave them the fuck alone. It's not rocket science it's the the basic concept of consent, we do it everyday in all aspects of life, you see a great advertisement for a Ferrari that doesn't mean Ferrari is inviting you to rob it's showrooms or factories. People like Peterson who despite his apparent "intellect" is apparently unable to distinguish between social interactions between decent normal human beings and criminal behaviour. Can you imagine how deeply misogynistic and chauvinistic you have to be to not understand simple rules of human social interaction.

It’s so simple: control yourself! No matter what, just control yourself at work. Be an adult. Don’t want to hear about “women make it difficult by wearing lipstick”, just control yourself! Women probably go through similar feelings anyway because the things men wear at work tend to be (in my experience) the things that women like. But that doesn’t matter at all. It’s not a man/woman thing. It doesn’t have to be perfectly equal. What matters is that men/women can turn up to work nearly naked or in a full leather catsuit and whip - whatever floats the other employee’s boat; it’s on the other employee to control themselves! Professional behaviour is written into the contract like professional dress is.

Right? It's almost universally recognised that the best look a man can have is a tailored suit and a tie, or in other words, the classic formal wear for men in offices. I don't say this because I disagree with him, I say it because some of the things he says are flat out dumb. What he _is_ good at is certain rhetorical tricks that can catch people off guard. Michael criticised that Vice reporter for not catching that trick right away, but I suspect most others wouldn't catch it either unless they knew to expect it.

In my understanding, the makeup question was only raised because he wants to point out that the sexism debate not necessary had to stop at a certain point. Rules that are currently created to prevent sexism in offices could - as a consequence - also include dress-code and makeup. So it is not about makeup. Makeup is only an example. It is about the fear, that things that are currently not on debate could be the target of people who develop anti-sexism policies. And at the end everyone looses.

This is what's called the 'slippery slope' fallacy. You can't just oppose any kind of action because theoretically an absurd exaggerated form of it exists, and if you do then it's an incredibly lazy argument. Punishing employees for groping co-workers or calling women derogatory names doesn't mean we have to turn all work places into grey dystopias where everyone has to wear baggy jumpsuits and face-masks. What Peterson is doing is what Christian fundamentalists do when they start arguing "If gays have relationships, why not men and cows, or babys and insects?", as if a line can't obviously be drawn.

If you watched the entire interview, he mentioned that NBC is having a rule about hugging and that NBC is forbidding employees to have affairs. And that you get fired if you know that and don't tell the Human Ressource Department. Things are pushed already today much further than only forbidding to give women derogatory names. I think a lot of his arguments was lost during the editing of the interview. This is an un-edited version: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ipuRm9Cr3rm5cmw.html
@LackingSaint
@LackingSaint 6 жыл бұрын
+Viet Woojagig To go over both claims here: 1. "Rule about hugging" to be clear, the exact wording of the rule makes it clear that quick hugs are fine but extended hugs within the workplace are dodgy territory. I think, if we're willing to have a conversation about banned groping, then there's no reason this isn't debatable either - many people, particularly men, DO use long hugs as an excuse to inappropriately touch co-workers while claiming that they were just hugging. 2. "Forbidding employees to have affairs" having a company policies against inter-work relationships is fairly non-controversial and has been well-established for decades - in the US there's even a whole system for 'Love Contracts' because it's such a tricky area. Romance in the workplace can be distracting, it can be chaotic to the work environment in the case of a break-up, and there is often a huge issue of power dynamics if one of the employees is a superior/subordinate to another. In neither case do I think either of these come anywhere closet to the absurdity of "Ban women from wearing make-up", which is a personal freedom that has no inherent impact on anyone else.

he was speaking on how would you eliminate sexual harassment which might demand removing sexual cues. It wasn't a slippery slope he was presenting a thought experiment if you have a problem with some men becoming sexually aggressive in the work place and we know that a biological response of a heterosexual male is to become sexually aroused with the visual mimicry of female orgasm which brings along a wave of hormones etc... it isn't about just "people getting in trouble for groping" its about the question of prevention. I personally think romantic interactions in the work place should be banned because the problem with harassment in general is that it is subjective and a single person might consider behavior from one person not harassment but the exact same behavior from another person to be harassment.

Women don't wear make up to work in order to look "attractive" to men. Women wear make up to work because it is expected and in some cases required in order to look "professional". Looking professional in accordance with dominant social norms is the primary impetus behind women wearing make up in the workplace; secondary reasons do include the general social pressure on women to look more "youthful" than their years, to look more "well-rested" than most women generally are, and lastly, yes, the more women conform to the standards of appearance that are imposed on us the more easily we can progress through many work environments. None of these reasons for wearing make up in the workplace reflect women's individual wish to look more attractive to men but rather are a reasoned response to the societal pressures that are paced disproportionately on women in order to progress in the workplace. Shows like this should really consider speaking to women about their experiences and how differently women are often treated for non-conformity to appearance standards before offering up agreement with the supposed "truism" that women only wear make up out of a personal desire to perform a sexual display.

There's no difference between looking clean and presentable and accentuating sexual attractiveness? Men absolutely do it too. Look at how men dress when they're going out to a bar, trying to pickup women. Tight pants, unbuttoned shirts - showing off their bodies, intentionally trying to attract women. Women don't need rouge, lipstick, heels and tight skirts to look presentable. How about parents who dress their young children like that - like in beauty pageants? Is there no difference between that and a parent putting them in clean, normal clothes and brushing their hair?

I am a solid left winger and I like the fact that JP is calling out the “personal is political” ideology that has replaced left wing politics. Unless people can take responsibility for their own lives, they can’t make a contribution to any kind of collective well being. There is a kind of dissonance when it comes to sexuality. I see people defending rampant sexualisation as empowerment, while complaining about the objectification of women and it feeding rape culture. The scramble for inclusivity has dismantled the actual left wing platform which was the most inclusive platform ever. People have become obsessed about things that divide us, where the job of the left should be to concentrate on the common challenges that unite us. In the UK and AUS, same sex marriage was enacted by conservative governments. Because it is not really a political issue.

So, there's a lot here but just to go over this specifically: >I see people defending rampant sexualisation as empowerment, while complaining about the objectification of women and it feeding rape culture Alright so assuming we're talking about a person who theoretically believes all three of these things, here's how none of that is hypocritical 1. "Rampant sexualisation". This is almost exclusively praised by feminists when it's representative of an aesthetic chosen BY a woman because SHE desired to dress this way. non-conforming clothing, non-'traditional' body types, these are almost always what's being praised because it present an ability for women to exist outside of societal norms while still being accepted. 2. "Objectification of women". This is almost exclusively disdained by feminists when it's representative of an image PUT UPON women, for instance in mainstream cinema when only one specific look or body-type is represented. It is the exact opposite of the thing above, because it's promoting the idea that women should only exist within a specific category of aesthetics and sexuality. 3. "Feeding rape culture" To associate women's freedom to dress freely or in an aesthetically pleasing way with 'feeding rape culture'... is kind of rape culture? It's basically the "She's asking for it" argument - there does not need to be ANY logical connection between "This woman is dressing in a provocative fashion" and "This woman wants men to molest/have sex with her". Sometimes people may simply want to dress how they want to dress - I might want to look conventionally attractive for a business meeting, but that doesn't mean I want to fuck any of my co-workers. Hope that clears things up.

The clips you played were intellectual exercises which have little bearing on reality. They are mental exercises in the way that intuition pumps are, as DC Dennett puts it. You using them as ad hoc arguments pitted against real life situations, creates a lot of errors because you presume the world of these arguments parallels our natural world. And it doesn't. Presenting his arguments in such a way, is to make a strawman out of Peterson's arguments. It's grossly inaccurate to do so. As time progresses we develop new tooling for which to critically analyze issues of our past. Rehashing old "truisms" give us a better understanding of those issues and could very well change our perception of them. What you hold to be true now does not mean it will be true in the future. You guys also seem to shift the context or specifically the justification for both JBP and your own arguments too much. It's kind of disconcerting because it makes your line of reasoning hard to follow logically. For example, Peterson was basing the justification of makeup on the base drive for sexual procreation. That does not mean there can not be higher order motivations for wearing makeup. @9:28 Sam conflates the context of JBPs base justification for makeup for that of the specific example of using attractiveness for workplace politics. @10:10 Natalie then reframes the argument essentially saying that there is no logical bridge for using a specific example from a broad policy. This is true and means that Sam's conflation of the justification is incorrect. However they both take it as collaborating statements instead of contradictory. That often the case when you have 2 agreeable people conversing and it's bias confirmation. The arguments or what's said no longer matter but we need to agree or be united against a cause. In this case, against whatever JBP says.

evolution is a very slow process, and humanity has long ago stopped caring about it. we overcame it. we moved on to cultural evolution through emergence of language and teaching. of course evolutionary processes are evident in a lot of human life in the same way etymology is evident in the use of language. that doesn't mean etymology is of major importance in pragmatics or semantics. human brain is malleable, programmable.

we have overcome evolution and it's not disrespectful to anything. humanity makes huge leaps of progress without relying, but actually defying, biological realities. birth traits that are considered defects and major impediments in natural state, are ameliorated by technology so that these genetic traits remain. evolution does not work for humans anymore. what's more, we actually change nature around us as well, defying evolution not only in our own species, but in other species as well. most of the food we eat has gone through massive change through generations and generations of human cultivation. evolutionary psychology is bogus because evolution is quite irrelevant in all aspects of human life today. it explains how certain things came to be, sure, like etymology does (in language). but that's all folks.

What, do you think the workplace was a magical time without conflict among workers during this mythical time when only men were allowed to work? And when I say "mythical," I'm saying such a time never actually existed, just so we're clear. Not that Peterson fans have any appreciation for clarity, but I'm enough of a traditionalist that I think words should mean things. I suppose this makes me a postmodernist somehow...

kitchen sink stuff leads me to believe you're not getting what's being discussed, non stop media coverage paints a horrible work environment for women in many industries due to men being the majority, the guest, who I assume is in agreement with that, then says the question is closed, IE yes they can and are. do these two things not seem contradictory? either it's bad... or it's fine. if we want to have 50-50 in as many areas as possible, would it not be a pretty good ideas to get this shit ironed out properly and not wait for each individual business and institution to have their own arbitrary social interaction rules and witch hunts via twitter... don't assume everyone is some neeky teen that can't get a girl or whatever, I'm 38, with teen boys and girls and a wife of 20 years, I don't want my daughters or sons growing up in a world where the reasons behind such things can not even be discussed, people would sooner just focus on "He wants to ban lipstick and shoes" really? this guys whole life goal is to just stop women working? that's a cartoon baddie, ask yourself why the need to edit him if he's nothing but evil. very easy to put the full video out alongside an edit.

It really doesn't. But you should see the vitriol towards the interviewer in the comments. I don't see it myself. I thought he was very fair to Peterson. I really don't understand how they think it was some kind of "hit piece". He lets him speak, he asks for clarification and he's careful not to put words in his mouth. The *interviewer* actually comes across as more reasonable in the long version than he does in the short one. Peterson comes across as defensive . It's *Peterson* that went in with a needlessly combative attitude this time.

"So is wearing a tie", in response to make-up or rogue being sexually provocative pls elaborate
@sebastianholzl4668
@sebastianholzl4668 3 жыл бұрын
Why do men wear ties and suits and shave and cut their hair and have shoulder pads and drive nice cars and all of those things? Well, a suit with shoulder pads and a tie makes you look healthy and strong, symmetrical and biologically healthy. You can provide for the family. A nice haircut and shaved face (or a well taken care of beard) make you look orderly and like you have your life in order, you're successful and you can support a woman and children and provide opportunity and a good life for kids. A nice car also signals success and social status. You know, why has Peterson greased back hair like that? Well, you sweat during sex. Humans find wet hair attractive because it's streamlined and not messy. All of those things have implications in the sexual domain. It is what people are attracted to. To pick out make-up as a unique factor is just overlooking that everything we do to take care of ourselves we do in order to be attractive. Also, it's not always just in one way. having a nice car just feels good, someone might say. Yeah, but why does it feel good? Because your project success and people have a higher image of you. Success is attractive, especially in the biological way that Peterson discusses attractiveness to women because it signals financial security for them. Historically, it maybe wasn't financial security, but like literal physical security if your husband was a successful man. So, all of the things we do to take care of ourselves are projection, because being seen favorably by other people, gets us jobs, relationships, sex, love, a pay raise, a good life, security, ... We live in a society with hierarchy, so the way we are positioned in that hierarchy has implications on our life. And so, all we do is make ourselves look good in other people's eyes at a fundamental level. Not only sexually, but that often goes along with it or is just heavily linked.

+Vandell Nonsense, you are just trying to silence the attempt at a reasonable discussion. A more constructive approach would have been to ask Chris on wich parts he agrees with Peterson and on wich parts he disagrees. But I guess you weren't interested into having a reasonable discussion about the subjects anyhow, or you wouldn't have attempted to dismiss Chrises attempt to start one.
