Writers are different, they sometime wonder too far because they think they can because they wrote other things people liked but its not so. This piece sounded Like he was drunk or high.

What I got from it is that John, Mary & Ruth-while technically “obeying” God’s laws-had become as the Pharisees : doing things for “show,” not out of love, which had the ultimate result of hardening their hearts (John brags to himself about always having “done his duty” by his wife-while HATING her”with burning hatred” for the past 10 years….John’s wife spends those same years “hurting John with every cutting remark she can think of,” while Ruth carries on good works “with a hardened heart,” neither thinking of or “caring about” the causes, themselves)…. In short, they put all of their efforts into “following the rules”-while completely neglecting God’s most important commandment (the one trait their faith demands of them) : Love.

This story reveals why Maughan was considered a mediocre writer. He couldn't imagine the real beauty and pleasure found in a dutiful life. Sommerset Maughan seen only one side of the coin, but he was brilliantly witty and insightful at times.

Of course God "knows" the answer to the question of theodicy (using the word "knows" in a totally provisional way). Maugham better kept with worldly matters which he is capable of describing with much talent and stayed away from metaphysics which he had no idea of.
