A short film by Geoffrey Case and the BBC released in 1984. The Judo Champ tells the story of John Stewart. John is the Scottish Junior Judo Champ, with many medals to his name. His new club and his new school want him to win competitions for them. His Dad wants him to bring glory to Scotland. The school bully badly needs teaching a lesson. But John no longer seems to enjoy tough, competitive judo where the aim is to beat your opponent. He wants something else - a different style, a deeper satisfaction. But few understand.
The Judo Champ was filmed at the Sobell Judo Club in 1984, with many of the club judoka being used as extra's, demonstrating throws and choreographing some of the fight sequences, as well as assisting with the story line.
