I recently completed watching both seasons of the web series The Test : New era of Australia's Cricket. I couldn't get enough of listening to Mr. Langer, the wisdom, clarity, passion & eloquency with which he speaks is impeccable. Its absolutely captivating & inspiring to listen & watch him talk not only about cricket but also about leadership, life skills & psychology as all these topics are so close to my heart. Its a pity that he is not on social media I wish I could tell him personally of my respect & admiration for him. Kudos to you for bringing out such a wonderful podcast & giving insight into such candid stories. 😊

The end of his coaching career was sad tbh. I really admired how he picked up AUS team after Sandpaper gate 2018. Some of his achievements:- AUS won ODI series in IND after a decade (3-2) 2019 AUS retained the Ashes in ENG after 20 years (2-2) 2019 AUS won ODI series in ENG in 2020 (Only team to do so since 2015) AUS won T20 WC in 2021 in the UAE AUS retained the Ashes 4-0 in AUS in 2021-22

Funny story with Justin Langer, I went to watch NSW v Western Australia in Newcastle, I was young, I doubt he was even established at the time, Lee, McGrath, Mark Waugh, some bloody good players were playing and JL was sitting in the stands waiting to bat and a guy was asking him to sign a jersey for "charity", asking JL to get the whole team to sign it, in hindsight I think that pissed him off but I remember going up to him and saying hello and him telling me to "fuck off leave me alone" lol.

I don't get JL, he mentions how hard social media can be on the mental health of players (and kids) but then also says that being brought up tough and it's the way it should be and players should get on with it. It's a bit of a dichotomy

I can see the point. Toughness and coming through tough situations can give players a tremendous sense of achievement and can be very good for mental health. I would have been interested to hear how he adapted his coaching message to suit individual players' personalities and communication styles. That is a characteristic of all good coaches. Even Barassi knew who to tear strips off and who to encourage softly. I would have liked to have heard that. Social media is appalling with players spending hours on phones reading and responding to texts that are saying how hopeless they are. In a cricketing world with hundreds of millions of fans, the criticism will be neverending. If you trust the coach and have the relationship then strong criticism can be empowering.

Very interesting comments on Cummins and Finch. A concern that grown men that were leaders were too frightened to have a conversation that they considered difficult with JL. What does that say about leadership. Its hard to say whether not having Langer as coach was the reason for the World Cup debacle. But I do think the attitude by Cummins and his back room conspirators indicated comfortableness, the tail wagging the dog, and a boys club. Its not a pursuit of excellence in all areas. These are the factors that will stop the Australian team from growing and succeeding as they should. Of course they'll win games regularly, but they should be near the top in all forms. With respect to JL I would be interesting to hear how he adapts his delivery style and communication based on the player/s he's talking to. All good coaches know how to inspire individual players differently. I think Cricket Australia's response to this today has been particularly poor. They've deliberately misrepresented what he said. Really tacky and dare I say lacking in courage.

@@jogreeen I think you've got some of your dates and coaches mixed up. In the series against India we were missing our top 3 batsmen Warner Bancroft and Smith. Langer led the cultural change in which the first two years of the coaching stint sportsmanship and the right culture was seen as more important than winning or losing. The cheating scandal was when Lehman was coach. I'd advise you to see the podcast. In the 90 min interview, he touched on the Australian leadership issues for about 2 minutes max. Watching it puts it into perspective. The press tend to exagerate and blow things out of proportion.
@BDub2024
@BDub2024 Жыл бұрын
@@jogreeen England never contacted Langer to coach. Langer never made himself available or expressed interest. Being on the road and not in Perth made it difficult when Australian coach. Moving to England wasn't even a slight chance. He has 4 kids (teenagers to mid 20s) and there is no way he was to be away from home 9 months of the year. He said it clearly in the podcast... if you actually watched it! As Langer said, its completely fictional by the press. There was no contact or discussion by either Langer or England. Oh come on. I love JL, have followed him as long as I can remember, but his record as coach of Australia was ordinary at best. I do wonder how many of you have actually even followed the Aussies during this period. Sure they won the Ashes at home, but it was the weakest England team ever (who even lost to the windies). They lost to England in England, they lost to India in Australia, not once but TWICE!!! And the 2nd time it was the weakest Indian team to have ever left India. If i recall correctly the entire Indian bowling lineup had 15 test wickets between them and no Kohli, and that against Starc, Hazelwood, Cummins and Lyons! Totally embarrassing! Their best result was beating Pakistan in Pakistan. If an AFL or soccer coach had that record he would have been booted out.
