Once the most iconic ferry in Washington's waters. MV Kalakala operated on Puget Sound from 1935 until her retirement in 1967. "MV Kalakala was notable for her unique streamlined superstructure, art deco styling, and luxurious amenities. The vessel was a popular attraction for locals and tourists, and was voted second only to the Space Needle in popularity among visitors to Seattle during the 1962 Seattle World's Fair. The ship is known as the world's first streamlined vessel for her unique art deco styling."
What ever happened to this iconic vessel and how did it vanish. All of these quesitons and more will be answered during this FREE virtual tour offered by the Foss Waterway Seaport in conjunction with Pretty Gritty Tours and brough to you by the generosity of Port of Tacoma, Tacoma Creates, and Columbia Bank.

Hello this is great. Reminder this ship as a kid .We called it the cigar-shaped ship and yes i do remember the shaking as it went through the water.Great history story you put out love it .But sad story as well .The new Washington state ferry's should take some of the design and put it into its new fleet of ferrys Yes 🏆🤔

As a kid I probably rode most of the old fleet at one time or another. I rode the Chippewa, the San Mateo, and others, but never seemed to catch the Kalakala. It was always leaving the dock just as the family pulled up to the dock, wherever that was at the time. Thank for putting up the interior shots. As a native northwesterner, I appreciate this presentation.

The haunted kalakala. One of my first experiences doing paranormal research, the group I was in, the Washington State ghost society, were guests of the aghost group, who took us onto this ship. The car deck was pretty much rusted out and gone, so we were allowed upstairs. This was about 2000. A very cool ferry for sure.

The folks who brought her back from Alaska suffered from having a huge starry eyed vision for her but were far from reality. She was beyond being put back into service as a ferry, she should have been beached and repaired as a restaurant and nothing more.

I was a seven year old kid when my family took a ride on the Kalakala. I vividly remember the noise and vibrations while she was under way.

Hi Chris, Great video! Back in 1980 I started working at St Regis paper company on the tide flats. Being salaried they had annual Christmas parties. I was told of how great the Christmas parties were at the Top of the Ocean. I’m assuming it burned down in 78 or 79 due to arson. Just wondering if you could do a video on the Top of the Ocean if you haven’t already. Thanks. John

Me too! Hard to find shots of it and I suspect it’s because of 1940s security

The Kalakala looked fast, but was slow. As I remember had a top speed of about 18 knots. The steamship company wanted to draw riders from other steamship companies and replace its' own steamship. On its' maiden Seattle to Bremerton run, staged a race between the Kalakala and Tacoma, a steam passenger ferry, known as the fastest single screw steamship. The Tacoma's captain was ordered to loose the race so the Tacoma idled along behind the Kalakala. But on the return trip, the Tacoma's captain ordered full speed and set the record that I believe still stands for the Bremerton-Seattle route. The Kalakala was rebuilt to impress uninformed, superficial people. The Tacoma was scrapped about 1936, too bad.
