Today, we're going to take a look at a very interesting, very inexpensive, and very carry-friendly fountain pen: The Kaweco Sport Classic.

Love my sport classic. Use it every week. Need to refill it often, but it's worth it. Never used a fountain pen before, but the learning curve wasn't too steep. Would buy it again in a heartbeat.

I just want to thank you - this video is still very helpful and relevant 5 years down the road.

At work I have to write on a lot of different surface types, often on very small surfaces, so I started carrying two pens at work. They are both Uni Pins with 01 tips, one with waterproof ink and one with oil based ink. It has proven so useful that I recently started carrying them all the time rather than the fountain pens I used to carry. They don't look as fancy but they are extremely useful and require no maintenance.

I was very excited to see this in my feed when I woke up. The plastic version is crazy durable. I've beaten the absolute shit out of mine and taken it as my only fountain pen when I go to Lebanon for long-term work on two occasions (it never ever leaks, even on planes). Pro tips: use the monteverde mini converter instead of either of the kaweco models that fit this pen (plastic versions only). Light years better. Also, it is rumored that kaweco's ef nibs are much more consistent than their broader options.

Hey there Nick. Another stellar bit of content, well done. I have a Kaweko Brass Sport, great little pocket pen. A year or so ago I got my foot stuck in the rabbit hole that is fountain pen collecting. I have some much more expensive pens, and the Sport more than holds its own. Muck like the Rat ll can make one question why they would ever spend more for a pocket knife, the Sport is really all the fountain pen one would ever need.

Thank you for review! I recently purchased two Kawecos, EF nib--one exactly the same (even in color and nib size) as the Classic Sport in your review, and one the AL Sport in gold. I got both through Pen Chalet. I had no problems with my AL Sport (it's a great pen), but am having problems with my Classic Sport (hard starts, skipping, and that the nib size doesn't write like an EF like my AF Sport). I was wondering if there was a difference between the regular steel nib of my AL Sport, and the "gold" finish of the Classic Sport. In researching the issue, I came across your video explaining the (sometimes) issues of the Kaweco pen nibs in general. I especially like that you advocated going through a reputable seller who can offer good customer service--I'm glad I did this instead of going through a seller on Amazon, where customer service can vary, and can also take longer. I contacted Pen Chalet, and they responded the same day. They will be sending me a replacement. They also offered a refund. Thank you again!

Hey Nick, I have been using the Zebra F-301 fountain pen for a while but I have been thinking about getting a new and nicer and more importantly functionality. Which fountain pen do you suggest over the entire spectrum of low and high end? Kinda like the best of both worlds.

I picked up the Lilliput ballpoint and it's an excellent EDC for those that aren't into the fountain pen scene.

Have had Kaweco sports around for years for those days where I don't have a shirt pocket. This is the only fountain pen I put in pants pockets. They have even gone through the laundry without leaking ink. In regards to nib size.. in my experience, Japanese nib sizes are smaller than German nibs. So yes, a German EF is a Japan F or M. Speaking of scratches.. I took one to the beach once.. sand got between cap and body and scratched up the body quite a bit. But that one is now my camping pen.

Do fountain pens work well with waterproof paper like field notes etc? I really want one but I'm having trouble finding a good excuse. I'm a lefty and I use a lot of carbon paper at work so... Yeah help!

On nib sizes: Western and Japanese brands list their nib sizes differently. In the Western companies (think Parker, Cross, Kaweco, Monteverde, Montblanc, Visconti) EF comes in around .5mm and F around .7mm. In the Japanese brands (think Pilot, Platinum, Sailor) EF means .3mm and F means .5mm. So yes. Kaweco's EF isn't as fine as a Japanese company's extra fine, but ultimately that has more to do with the Japanese doing their own unique thing. Even the Chinese and Indian fountain pens follow the western standards.

I just got the lilliput as a gift and solved the rolling problem with a clip for it too. Lovely little pen.

Nick, when you mentioned the weight of the Liliput, I kept thinking that you should get yourself an aluminum version of the Lilitput. I carry one, and it disappears in my change pocket. Later on, you also mentioned the size is a little small. I agree that the Sport in aluminum is probably the perfect carry for you. Best of both worlds -- a totally light and pocketable pen that feels much more full-sized when posted.

How does this compare to the Liliput? Is the liliput worth the extra $15ish

The Al-Sport has a much better feel in hand and I plan to pick one up sometime this year. There is also a steel version but it's a little heavier than I would like. Lack of an included pocket clip on the Sport models doesn't bother me because I plant to carry it in a leather slip and the body is anti-roll when posted or not.

I'd like to get into them and im very interested in this one, but know nothing about cartridges or inks and what not, the only cartridge pen I have is a Pentel pocket brush which is for drawing, good for inking but not so much for writing since its well, a brush
