Interesting observation, and I pretty much agree with you. It must have something to do with the way photographs were made/printed back then. When silver based films were the standard,, the printing process would involve careful use of techniques like dodging and burning-- the photographer had a lot of control over how the image turned out.

Not only was the elegant Grecian Duchess of Kent acknowledged as one the the most beautiful woman of her time she was frequently cited on the International Best Dressed list which Hollywood glitz Di with her hook nose & vulgar tabloid scandals was not with good reason.
