*NOTE* Regarding the Ciele product: Yes WE know we aren't supposed to rely on SPF in makeup, but I don't think the general public knows that. The product specifically says that the product ITSELF provides an SPF 50+ protection. In the video on her website, the owner specifically says she does NOT recommend putting it on full strength and NO WHERE does it say that it needs to be applied over SPF for people to get that level of protection. New survey results were just published (tinyurl.com/3k9e5f8h) that said 80% of adults report that they have a skin concern, but only 40% of them get a regular scan at a dermatologist. How many of those 40% of people asked their dermatologist about wearing sunscreen under makeup? Maybe 20%? Yes, WE know we need to apply SPF under SPF makeup, but this is NOT common knowledge. Please consider the skin health of the average consumer! It's not just about us, right?

I think you’re absolutely right; if you’re mixing those drops with something else, it’s going to dilute the concentration. It just is, because that’s how it works. I’m with you - I’d wear SPF before makeup or even use the ambre solaire spray sunscreen for after makeup. Figured, like Perry, that this is in potential breach of trade descriptions acts across the world with the claims

I say this respectfully as a skin cancer survivor, how many people that are not aware that they should be using sunscreen under cosmetics with SPF, are actually purchasing prestige cosmetics that contain SPF let alone assuming that the cosmetic foundation, bronzer etc) will provide full protection? I think it’s a very very low number. I think the group here has wisdom regarding sun protection but also the general public is not far behind. They are basically in one of two categories; increasingly aware or don’t care.

@@dogwalker97with all respect, I disagree. I was very proud of myself for starting SPF daily in college. By the time I was in my 30s, in the 00s, I knew that some spf products were not adequate on their own. But, the only facial sunscreens sold in my town were hard to find & quite expensive, so I reasoned that Eucerin daily lotion with 30 SPF was actual sunscreen. 2 decades later, I am very spotty. The public does care, but if you have other serious health concerns and/or can’t afford dermatology visits, it’s not likely you’ll be able to get to the bottom of all this, and you may not be able to afford the outrageous price on sunscreen that is suitable for one’s face. I am guessing you have a fair amount of privilege, I’m very sorry you’ve had to deal with skin cancer, but I’m guessing you do not also have a lot of other serious health concerns, and have the time & resources to get what you need. There’s a lot of us trying to get it right but we don’t make enough money to cover all the preventive must-haves.

I think you should do a deep dive on the Ciele brand. I think they're capitalizing on people's skin anxiety in a dangerous way. Their product descriptions on their website or Sephora say nothing about using their products as supplemental SPF. More importantly, they claim to only use mineral sunscreen, but all of their products contain SPF boosters, which are functionally chemical sunscreens. I didn't even see a mineral SPF clearly listed for their powder! Also, sunscreens are drugs and they're making drug claims about their products.....but their website doesn't even have an ingredients list. The only place to see an ingredients list is a third-party site, Sephora. What they do list, at length, is what they don't include. Except a lot of those ingredients aren't even commonly used in skincare. I mean PLANKTON is on there. C'mon. Also, they don't use "pore clogging" ingredients, like shea bitter, except when they do, like with the beeswax in their products. I think this brand, like many others, is marketing themselves as "ethical" while behaving as unethically as possible. I believe them about sun protection though because they're certainly shady as hell

As an ex-Sephora employee, the colour-picking-scanner-thing has me *very* skeptical. I'm all-too-familiar with Sephora's ColourIQ system and its shortcomings. It seemed to be able to grasp dark and deep skin tones quite well, but if you're medium everything is yellow, and pale people might as well avoid it altogether because it *will* make you hot beige.

I also suspect their is a way to tweak the formula's that are scanned as well because it's done by ratios.

I'm someone with a medium dark skin tone with olive undertones and it's practically impossible for me to find a good match in a foundation that is also the right finish for my combo skin that gets oilier in the summer and drier in the winter. The best foundation I've found that matches me perfectly without making me too dewy or overly matte is the Lisa Eldridge foundation in shade 23. Depending on the finish and wear of their formula I would actually consider something like this especially if they expand so that you can choose the finish and also choose to make the formula thicker and lighter/darker for concealing and contour. We'll see how this works out for other people.

The brand ciele does not recommend using their products as your sole sun protection, they always state to wear your sun protection underneath your makeup, sun protection in their products is seen as added benefit, but I do agree that not all persons will know that and then they will use just the makeup product and think they are getting the 50+ protection

I'm interested to see how the foundation mixing device plays out, because it seems to me like it could either be a huge game changer that we end up seeing everywhere a couple years from now, or it could go down in the history books as a huge disaster if the mixing and matching is good but the foundation formula is really bad.

Wouldn't this device give you the same type of foundation each time? Or do they offer different bases before the colors are added? What if the formula starts to break you out after awhile? Or dry you out, or make you shiny?

Could places like Sephora not have a machine like this for customers? If brands were willing, this would allow people to mix their own foundations in the brands they like.

Is it expensive? Sure. But then I looked at all the foundations I purchased and missed the return window for, and that's way more than $300 in the past few years. If they can address finishes, and it wears well, I wouldn't be opposed. There's just the issue of popularity and whether the company (or other companies) can provide the base level pigments for the longer term.

Honestly the foundation machine might be nice for theatre! I've been in quite a few local plays, and the main issue we come across is makeup - we try to keep makeup costs down, but since we have 1-3 months of nothing between shows, we have to buy more foundation for every new show. If we can, we try to have people buy their own foundation, but its a huge waste for those who only use it for shows! That machine makes a small amount of foundation (and its custom) so it would probably be useful!!

I love the idea of the custom foundation machine- I'm very pale, desaturated olive and the closest matches for me are greyish k-beauty brands. I've not found a foundation by a Western brand that really nails it, and I've stumped a couple of lovely sales reps when I've gone in to get a colour match, haha! Very curious to see if this would work for me and my uneven, weird skin tone.

The Purito bb cream in 21 Light Beige is as gray as the day is long and I was shocked to find it to be a perfect match for me (maybe the tiniest bit light). I never knew that olive could be a pale skin tone and I also never thought I could be pale olive with my German/Irish/Scottish genetics. I thought olive skin tones were only people with Mediterranean ethnicities. Live and learn. I have found that a drop/smoodge of pale blue corrector counteracts any foundation that's slightly too warm. Also the TirTir red cushion in shade 21W is a good match for me. W, yes…I think they do the same weird shade labeling as Haus Labs. You can buy a set of testers to check your shade. I hope some of this helps.

Jen, I love your analysis 😍 You are always spot on when it comes to see every sides of a thing and guess what the potential problems may be 🥰 Around 09:00 you talk about the base (and the various brands that teied to do something similar). I actually remember the Lancôme one, and after checking the inci list of the base, I thought I'd never use this foundation : it was way too emollient, and without any ingredient providing long-wear or transfer-resistance 😖 So, if I have to choose between a perfect match with my undertone or a perfect match with my skin type (oily) that needs extra strong lasting power, I far prefer to choose the lasting power and deal with a shade that is not quite accurate 😉 Love ya ❤❤❤

The issue I'm seeing here is you have facial redness/acne/rosacea. If you scan the wrong area, you'll have a red foundation lmao also the formulation of the foundations itself, a lot of foundation go patchy on me so that would be an issue for me.

I love the idea of a foundation mixer in that I can take much less product with me when I travel (and obviously the concierge color match). However, I use my current foundation for more than just its color. It works with my skin type and texture. So, it doesn’t give me the flexibility to use the formula I’d like. But still pretty cool.

Not sure I'd invest in this. "Prescriptives" (by Estee Lauder) back in the 80s was amazing and your foundation/powder/concealer was mixed right in front of you. You got to try it before you bought it (I think it was $30-35) which was a tad expensive, but because it matched your skin exactly, it was worth it. A bottle would last from three to six months, plus there was also the option of getting a matching loose powder as I mentioned. I wish they'd bring that back. As for the Ciele SPF 50 bronzing drops, I'd like to see what Lab Muffin says about that. I trust her opinion regarding SPF because she's Australian, she's a cosmetic chemist and has a PhD in chemistry.

The biggest problem I've seen with other machines like this (the ones for liostick and nail polish) has been the dosing of the individual colors. The gadget should just be at a beauty counter/makeup store or be advertised to makeup artists. The regular person should not find this super helpful.... I can foresee it as makeup brands (nars, lancome, mac, etc) creating their own bases for this foundation machine. The marketing will revolve around the different formulations (mattifying, hydrating, long-wear, sheer, etc) Kind of like how every coffee brand and their mother have K-cup compatible versions.

Boots have been doing the matching service using a face scanning device for a while so I assume this foundation gadget works similarly in terms of shade matching. It's expensive but if it works for the people who find finding the right shade hard and the foundation is good, it can definitely get customers. My only concern for colour matching would be skin discolocoration - any redness, hyperpigmentation - which could lead into incorrect matching, the people in the clips seem to have fairly even skintones.
