Hollywood A-listers David Fincher(Director) and Michael Fassbender(Lead character) are bringing out Neflix movie based on this great comic. Regardless of how good or bad it is I strongly recommend checking out The Killer as a comic.
The Killer goes deep into the mind of a paid hitman completely void of feelings or care for human life - be the target man, woman or a child. Reading the comic you step into the mind of assassin carefully and methodically planning his next hit, carrying them out and listening to his own thoughts - while trying to keep his sanity. This psychological layer gives The Killer it´s original and cold tone that should keep you hooked. One of my most re-read comics!

Anyone other fans of The Killer? I reserve the right to be wrong about any details of its publication history. If you have information about it that I´ve missed please share in the comments. The more we have info the better it is for interested readers. This series is such a delightfully brutal and thought provoking look inside the mind of a paid hitman. And his mind is slipping...

Thank you for your kind words. I enjoyed the movie too. And happy reading! Now you’ll learn how Fincher dug out the plot from first 5 albums and did his magic to make it work on big screen. I find these choices always interesting. The Killer was also one of the best comics-to-live-action adaptations in a long time.

Thanks🥳I think this went under the radar for most is because it´s not trying hard to please the reader. It´s aImost as uncaring for the readers pleasure as The Killer is for his targets:) still congratulate Archaia for doing this in English. The Killer content had pretty much everything going against US market at the time of publication, I think. The main character is clearly an unpleasant person and the story isn´t about him growing into better person.

Fincher’s film is very interesting to watch through the key of criticism of the modern world of big business. If you would change the guns and knives in it to pens and papers, and the assassinations, to hostile takeovers and elimination of competitors, then "The Killer" is a wonderful study of the rat race and uncompromising business war. One in which outsiders ("normies") are just an insignificant background. In which one mistake can cost you years of building your position. In which there are always several other, equally uncompromising people waiting to take your place, and your every move, even the unsuccessful ones, is calculated into stakes and reduced to heartless procedures, the final result of which must always be - profit. The mantra repeated by the protgonist: "Stick to your plan. Anticipate, don't improvise. Trust no one. Never yield an advantage. Fight only the battle you're paid to fight." sounds like something taken straight out of a couching manual for the 21st century version of yuppies. Business "dudes" bred by hyper-capitalism, seduced by the world of billionaires. Slim gentlemen in suits more expensive than cars equating success with perfectionism in achieving business goals. Rejecting the empathy and humanity of those standing in the way of their goal. "Each and every step of the way, ask yourself, "What's in it for me?" This is what it takes. What you must commit yourself to. If you want to succeed. Simple."

You have really put thought in this. I only watched it once stuffing my face with popcorn:) I guess I was more on the look out how closely the movie followed comic book content. I may need to watch it again to experience it without the need for comparison.

@@analogcomics I really like Fincher as an artist. Reports indicate that he is apodictic on set, but the combination of his technical skills and tenacity in executing his vision is incredibly impressive. And the older he gets, the less he also cares about cheap flashiness, and more about using his experience and available resources and techniques to highlight stories and characters. I always look forward to each of his films, so I turned on "The Killer" with high excitement.

I enjoyed the fact that the beginning of the movie was bold enough to follow the actionless - some would say boring - waiting. I found that already in the comic as a was smart way to introduce the assassin character. That told the reader that character is more important than the amount of splash pages of action. Being able to hold off the action in a movie shows vision and confidence from director, too. I have to agree on that @@SzymonAdamus

Killer wasn't as bad as the screen adaptation of 'Wanted'. I like the principles 'Killer' lives by, "Stick to the plan, trust no one, adapt, don't improvise".

The Killer movie plot actually exists within the comics version too(not a carbon copy but the main idea of it). It´s just that the book has more plot lines(and characters) running simultaneously and it was simplified for live action. This makes sense to me. If they were to copy the book exactly it would have to be TV series rather than a movie to make it work. Ah, Wanted...That was a shining example how to loose all content from the original source inside the Hollywood entertainment machine. Movie was bad on its own anyway. Not caring about the original content still allows the studio to do a good movie - unfortunately they missed that memo. They did kept the name the same at least😄I did wonder why they even bothered as there was zero chance that they could accept even 30% of the content into the movie. Why pay for the rights?
@eastafrika728

Big studios have so much politics inside them that too often it distorts the end product. So many people demanding so many things that in the end they just cannot hold on to the orginal content. It is a shame but with movie adaptations at least we´ll always have the original content that people love which was the reason they bought it in the first place.@@eastafrika728

I watched the movie a couple months ago, really enjoyed it. Picked up the comic recently, I like it also. I am confused with how the movie chose to adapt it, comic has more story to it, seems like Fincher made it more concise and left some story threads left to interpretation, which I honestly prefer a bit more. Guess it depends on preference, but with this genre in particular(thrillers), I usually prefer the concise story approach, fleshing out individual scenes and sequences even if the plot is concise, but I respect both the comic and movie
@analogcomics
@analogcomics 4 ай бұрын
Yes, The movie was more streamlined and didn’t include all story threads from the comic. I think this was because of different mediums. Comics vs movies often have to rely on different things in order to be interesting. The luxury of comics to stop time for long periods doesn’t exist in comics. Just like you I liked both versions and it was interesting to see what parts of the comic Fincher decided to include in the movie.

Sorry, I somehow missed your comment completely. I wish I’d been more awake when that first print came out. Would have been much shorter wait to read the full story. I also think that Tricolor cover looks better. I just finished The Complete Collection. As strange as it may sound(even to myself) I thoroughly enjoyed the cynicism of this story. It just fit the killers character perfectly. In fact without the context of the story all the facts of history laid out would feel like cringy preaching. Here it feels the writer is on top of the story and not just doing it for the shock value.

Another amazing video, my friend! I heard Fincher (one of my favorite directors) was making a new movie based on a Comic. I had to find out more. For some reason i immediately started thinking about Manchette's Fatale by Doug Headline & Max Cabanes. Have you seen this amazing story? Max Cabanes is a GENIUS ARTIST. Actually the artwork and storytelling technique in THE KILLER reminds me very much of the art in FATALE. The art and colors look like a combination of Max Cabanes and the underrated French artist, BARU. Are you familiar with his work? Please take the time and just enjoy the beauty of his series called L'Enragé. You must do a video on Baru!!! Haha. He does not get enough attention for his work. (even though his style is slightly based on the early work of Carlos Munoz of Alack Sinner fame)

It sure is interesting to see how they adapt to different medium. Live action rarely allows a carbon copy visuals compared to comics. I wish they’d stick with the killers unwavering detachement from the rest of the world. To please greater audience movie studios so often have to transform these stories so that they become more like a journey into a better person. In this case it’d mean missing the very core of the main characters mind. Fincher did say in an interview he hopes The Killer makes people fear the person behind them in Home Depot checkout line. I thought that was a promising comment.

Didn’t knew about this one (i guess thrillers are not my thing) but the art intrigued me a lot and the fact the authors are European might bring an edge to the story. Hope Netflix doesn’t ruin the original narrative and ambiance, but I’m doubtful….

There is definitely edge to this story. The Killer is not a nice person and creators are not trying to make a decent citizen of him. As far as moral goes The Killer is not trying to make readers like him either. I really hope the same tone lasts through the whole series. And if you don´t care for thriller maybe see it from The Killers point of view? Then it´d be a slice of life drama😄

I´m trying to keep my hopes down with the Netflix adaptation. It is so rare that a good comic gets a good live action adaptation. It bothered me a lot at first but as it became almost a norm I lost most of my interest to these adaptations. I really wanted to like The Sandman TV-series for example but was disappointed how Morpheus and Matthew characters(and also the dynamic between those two characters) were changed. For me it changed the very core of the of Gaimans writing that got me hooked.

During covid I learned to expect low quality from big streaming services - especially from Netflix. They really went all in for quantity-before-quality. But it´s good that there is more competition now. It allows people to gravitate towards better quality which puts pressure on these big companies to deliver better products. I love it when smaller and passionate creators surprise everyone by doing it right. And yes, it only took 30 years to get my wife to read comics! Depending how you look at it I´m a bad salesman or just very patient:)

We hear his thoughts about the double standards of many incidents around the world. We also see him quite often relaxing by reading books. I guess you could say he is - despite his profession - quite educated person. But he also uses all that knowledge to cement and rationalize his hate for other people.
