The evacuation scene from beginning to end is one of the strongest scenes in movies, but here it is cut woefully short.

agreed. so disappointing. i liked the panic in the embassy, shredding documents, arrival of choppers, panic at the gates, etc. this is only the tail end.

The whole score is fantastic. Yet go on IMDB and there are hundreds of people saying it ruined the film for them. Same with the reviews on there for Manhunter, which is another film with a very 'un-generic' score.

Such an incredible scene - AND it was shot without CGI or modern film making technology - all real helicopters and on film makes it even more incredible. The way the actors are blown around by the wind and how quickly Pran's wife and kids just are on the chopper and away... the music is fantastic - just filled with such dread, drama, urgency and foreboding and using the instruments of the era. The music at the opening is so filled with tension and the final credits music is soothing but still filled with the sadness and tragedy - totally nailed it IMO.

Yes, I wanted to comment specifically about that. I think it was a ground breaking moment for soundtracks.

I remember this on the TV news back then, and a few days later with the evacuation at Saigon (same squadron at both operations, the rescued personnel taken on to Thailand.) in this movie i agree with the majority when you see the helicopters coming in to LZ Hotel, a few blocks from the embassy, days later the football field enacted here was where the Khmer Rouge murdered most of the city functionaries. The urgency, the tension, the awful sense of futility, the knowledge that later something horrible is about to happen--( the evacuation of Phnom Penh wasn't as crazy as at Saigon, if anything crowds of Cambodians stood around watching, curious)--you realise very soon everyone left behind will die. The music is the perfect accompaniment to the scenes....There were many empty seats remaining on those helicopters......This i found more intense than the awful ejection of Cambodians you see later from the French Embassy in the pouring rain and the grinning Khmer Rouge soldiers awaiting outside the gates.....If only they took up the chance to be evacuated....

This scene was actually two separate scenes filmed at different times, you'll noticed how the helicopters change from smaller hueys to larger helicopters is how you know which scene was which, they were cut together to make it look like one scene.

HMH-463 played in this movie. All the CH-53Ds you see are from HMH-463 Pegasus out of Kbay Hawaii. These scenes were probably filmed when the squadron went to Thailand for exercises aboard USS Belleau Wood LHA3. 1984... Those very same Sea Stallions you see in this scene were most likely used in the evacuations of Cambodia and Saigon!! The Hueys are marked YH and Marines are most likely RTAF UH-1H army models dressed as Marine Hueys. Hollywood never gets it right and always screws it up. Would be better if they left out the Hueys for this scene. Notice all the pax that were white people are Marines in civ clothes...

@Brad I TAUGHT trauma medicine on the flight line at Kaneohe Bay, HI and it’s called Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) not “Kbay Hawaii.” The squadron I used for teaching is Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 463, Kaneohe, Hawai’i. You’re not a jarhead--just sound like a wannabe. “Hollywood never gets it right?” My nephew was the Navy Seal who is the tech director for Transformer Movies..are you saying you know more than a Navy Seal?? Doubt it seriously. What Subordinate Unit were you with? Your CWO? I was with the 61st Medical Battalion Cam Ranh Bay and later Qui Nhon and later Da Nang from 8 June 1966 - 17 February 1968. We used the UH-1 for our “Dust-off unit” (Air Ambulance). Are you going to tell me that I was wrong there too?

Did I miss a conversation or insult or question you in someway? No I did not. I did 8 years in the USMC, last of which was at 4th Force Recon Company at "Kbay" aka "Marine Corps Base Hawaii"', aka Kbay", aka "MCAS Kbay" as a MOS 0621. till today, Kaneohe was a initially a NAS, then a MCAS, then a MCAF when it was considered overall a MCBH. Lately its MCAS again on the airfield side. . Im quite a real US Marine. How about YOU?? I doubt it. You talking about "trauma medicine" at the flightline " sounds fishy to me its medical, and that wreaks navy or civ..... So you are most likely no Marine. One thing that is particularly insulting to any Marine is being questioned about service from a non Marine that doesent even know their shit.BTW, I grew up as well in Kaneohe my entire life as a kid which is why I use slang the Marines there did. Locals called MCAS Kaneohe simply " The Marine Base"... still do . I'm also a 5000 hour plus Commercial pilot and a A&P mechanic nowadays too. I ALSO take actual CARE of a real no shit HMH-463 CH-53D Sea Stallion (Buno 156964) Im not sure what the reference to Navy SEALS are. Happy your nephew works for the movies. Whats that got to do with this ? Weird. Did I miss something? Please do not question my service record on a public forum like this. Shows poor taste and alludes that you are nuts. "My CWO?"- Had a couple in my time in the Marines but normally only Chief Warrant Officers are found in aviation and other units and at 4TH FR CO We did not have any such Marine as its not organized to have one. There are no "subordinate units" Keep your weird comments to yourself if you have literally nothing good or pertinent to say. And make damn sure if you call out a person on their service you are correct and can back it. Notice how this thread is not even ABOUT this cool evacuation scene of the Killing Fields? Its due to people like you. Back to the movie.......

Just curious but what's a 'pax'? And I think you're right that big budget Hollywood is remiss in not getting it right when they ought to, but this was originally a relatively small budget UK production company, Goldcrest films, adopted for distribution by Warner Bros., who I think did what they could to make it as true to the record as possible. From what I understand from accounts of the filming of that scene, they took as few liberties as possible.
