And now, we've come to the last game in the Orochi Saga, KOF '97. Here, gameplay now has two distinct modes, Advanced (where you build your super meter by fighting normally and are able to spend built stocks on either MAX mode [more damage overall] or Desperation Moves) or Extra (which is similar to KOF '95 where you build up your meter by holding buttons manually, and have infinite Desperation Moves when at low health). Each side has other nuances too, like different dashes and evasion. As for Athena herself, this is the game that introduces her aerial Desperation Move: Phoenix Fang Arrow.
For this game, I'm planning on doing two runs, one for both Advanced and Extra moves (as each mode, similar to Street Fighter Alpha 3, has it's own color selection). Also because the fact that '97 is probably the shortest game in the saga. The game doesn't really start having real storytelling until after the tournament is over, plus, it's lack of music save for very specific characters and the bosses. It's certainly an odd way to close out this arc, but hey, I don't make the rules. Also, for all honesty, the only tough roadblock in the game is Orochi Yashiro (nevermind the struggling against Orochi Iori and Orochi himself... I just suck, but they're not controller-throwing inducing). O. Yashiro is basically the Saisyu of '97: blocking all incoming attacks and making DAMN sure to throw you like he's some sord of instant death radius character.
Also, this is the outfit that most fans (myself included) love, for Athena, and is obviously the one my Profile Picture is based off of. I still find '96 to be the most fun game in the Orochi saga, but '97 is quite alright in on itself. Next on Athena's journey (besides an Extra style run in '97): KOF '98.
