The fact that you’re sitting there and don’t know what it means, means the painter should have explained exactly what it means and as the king I would have said get someone else to do another one and stipulate the type of background to use. I think the painter doesn’t like the king and my initial thought was a tampon being used at the appropriate time for which it is intended.

I think it is a brilliant representation of how the man is camouflaged by the “job”. The red to me represents england and all the blood spilled in the name of the crown. The red evoking blood and fire does have an ominous feel to it. It certainly doesn't convey a sense of stability about the monarchy. When I saw it, I thought of the Hunger Games and the quote "if we burn, you burn with us." Typically a butterfly is symbolic of change and rebirth. To me the portrait feels like it's signaling the end of the monarchy.

The artist/painter knew what he was doing. It's quite a shocking portrait. Red surrounding Charles like flames. His face for all to see stood out. The butterfly on his shoulder reminding him of what he done to Diana. 😏 Oh yes!
