I'm on an end-of-year fuzz journey, so I thought I'd invite you all along with me! Today, I'm pitting the King Tone Mini Fuzz Germanium against its Silicon counterpart - both are absolutely stellar and for my money, these are two of the very best modern-day fuzz pedals you can find.
Let me know what you think in the comments below! Are you team Germanium or team Silicon?

They’re both highly adjustable, a feature not necessarily found on many other gain units. Fuzz isn’t my thing, but these do a wide variety of sounds and I feel like they both would accommodate my classic rock tone chasing. Nice sounds today Jack! You’re spoiling us! -Jim

Superb demo and playing, think I'll go with the germanium for my British voiced amps along with humbuckers. Thanks for the help deciding! Also helped me pull the trigger on one of Gibson's newly crafted Nashville 335s, love that sound you were getting with the GE, cheers mate!

You are one of my favorite demonstrators, and this is one of my favorite Fuzz. I have the Mini Ge on my board. You cannot go wrong with either? The Zonk, and Fat Full EQ are great settings! The bias control is killer! I have a Fuzz pedal obsession, and could easily see picking up the Si, for all reasons you said. I’m REALLY happy with the Ge! Note: you really have to work at dialing Fuzz in, in general. The subtle differences of rolling off guitar volume, pickup selection, how much gain on the amp, how much gain on the fuzz, volume on the fuzz, bias...too much, or not enough means struggling with the tone vs. 1000 shades of AWESOME!

That’s the two pedals I’ve been looking at for a year now... just couldn’t decide between the two... glad I can actually hear👂 them to compare now. I think I’ve decided. Great demo video Jack. Thanks. Germanium it is. :)

Stellar playing and chops. Really enjoyed the in depth video. I think your base tone was fairly clean however. These pedals really seem to shine more on an already dirty or slightly broke up amp. They seem to take on a completely different character that way. I'm usually a big fan of Germanium first, but after hearing several videos of the mini fuzz, I'm leaning more towards the silicone version.

Very interesting Jack. I’ve always dismissed Fuzz as being a bit too over-the-top for my needs. But some of those lower volume tones, particularly with the germanium, were right on the money. Hmm, plenty to think about there.

I had the Ge and it was really unstable in Northern California Summer heat. Could never dial in the same sound twice it seemed. When it DID sound good, (probably before the amps/room heat up) it was HUGE- as big as my Pigdog Tonebender.

I use a Route 66 myself, and I think the Silicon works very good with it. I also thought it did a fine job when you turned the guitar volume down. Initially I was thinking the Germanium all the way...changed my mind.

That opening track was very Satriani-esque! Great demo. Can I just ask, how is it that you have a seemingly bottomless bag of riffs and licks? Do you have a good handle on music theory, or is it from songs? Or both? You are the best guitar demonstrator on KZfaq, IMO. Fantastic playing.

Both sound great but to my ear the germanium has that more traditional snarl/splat and clean up sparkle that the vintage fuzz were known for. Question for anyone, right on the kingtone sight it mentions the issue with germanium transistors and their sensitivity to heat. I live in Phoenix (but don't gig outside in the heat (avg temp in most rooms I'd play, on a bad day might get up to 80 on the floor). Is the external ability bias sufficient enough to mitigate this issue? Prefer the Germanium but concerned about the heat issue

@@jackgriffithsmusic PHEW! Relief. I’ve watched. Yes, you’re right, they’re both wonderful. If the Ge has a tonal or feel advantage, for me, it didn’t seem worth the worry if it’s temperature sensitivity, or having to find a center positive power supply. But, honestly, the sound of the Si is closer to the sound in my head. And, I love it’s glassy rasp when it cleans up. And found, like you, that simply from 10 to 9 on the guitar is like disengaging a switch. It’s almost like it’s a clean tone, a heavy OD, and a massive messy fuzz bomb all in one. Thanks for this one!

I have both and you really can't go wrong with either. The bias has a much wider range than most other FF style pedals including the Analogman Sun Face, letting you get some really spitty gated sounds bordering on a kind of Zonk/Mk1 Tone Bender. To my ears the Ge is grittier, and the Si has more gain and that singing Eric Johnson sustain going on (uses the BC183 like the EJ signature FF). They both clean up great but the Ge sounds a bit fuller with cleanup, while the Si sounds a bit sharper. I like the full on fuzz sound better on the Si, but the cleanup better on the Ge. Of course...😭

Is the Ge temperature temperament?
@bobilly
@bobilly 3 жыл бұрын
@@stanislavmigra to some degree, yes. They have NKT275 transistors, which are known to sound great but be a bit finicky. The bias knob helps considerably, especially with the light that tells you when it's in the proper range. I've heard that he is considering using Japanese 2SB transistors which sound almost identical but are less temperamental. Analogman offers these transistors with his Sun Face as well and generally describes them as pretty warm.

They both sounds beyond good. I mean, how much they are? Those are GODLY sounds ... I will go (considering tones in this video) with Silicon. As I dont hear enough difference, to justify the unstable nature of Germanium transistors. I have couple Ge pedals and they sound and behave differently in summer and in winter.
