December 1966.
"Dead End Street" is number 14 on the charts and the Kinks are back in the studio recording again. The Kinks have problems, though. Ray Davies is thinking about leaving the band. "I hate everyone in this business," he says. Where have all the good times gone?

Of the 'Big Four' of the British Invasion I've always admired The Kinks for maintaining their Britishness. Yes The Beatles, Stones, and Who showed their British colors time to time. I always felt The Kinks were strictly a British band who keep their sound and lyrics more pointed towards England then their contemporaries. The Beatles are pretty timeless and almost international in their sounds. The Stones always pointed towards America in their sound. The Who was always shifting between a American sound but with British sensibilities (if that makes any sense). But the Kinks always felt like a British band for the British Man.

I think that their distinct British qualities are one of the reasons they've struggled at times to make an impact on the charts in the United States -- although they are certainly still well known and appreciated here. But they don't get the same love here in the states as the other 3 bands you mentioned. Of the big 4 British Invasion bands, the Kinks were the last I got into -- I don't think the younger version of me related to the English themes and music hall style sounds. But once I was in the right place mentally to appreciate it, I became absolutely obsessed with the Kinks. And, really, for all the talk about Ray Davies songs being so England-centric, his lyrics have much more universal appeal than they are given credit for. Outside of maybe Thom Yorke, I can't think of a song writer who so perfectly encapsulates feelings of loneliness and despair within their lyrics.

Alot of people are unaware that " Village Green" song was recorded in 1966 but released in 1968. Either way it's Timeless. Davies played this in 1997 on his " Storyteller " tour. I have that color photo with yellow background and had the article.

The Kinks, like a lot of estab groups of that era, were under enormous pressure to come up with hits all the time and were constantly working (recording, tours,tv shows, press, etc) with little time off--Ray as songwriter was pressured constantly by his rec co to "provide" (singles, album's)until he suffered--like Brian Wilson-a breakdown

Pete at that time was recovering from being in a car accident and had taken several months off. He was never quite the same after the accident, if you look at pictures of him it's like his personality had changed. 😢 Love you PQ 💖🇬🇧☮️

Interesting look at the struggles of the creative process and evolution of the music promotion. The pressure to produce a hit in a very short time and maintain media presence in a very competitve field would have driven anyone a bit loony, not to mention resentful of the industry. The article's existence alone while insightful to the Kinks band members' mindset at the time comes off as an intrusive, unsavory and something the band was forced to do by the record company's promotion/ legal departments. I'm familiar was the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones and Monkees feature length and short form media of the time, but didnt know the Kinks produced one for Dead End Street and it was a treat to watch, it's like something out of a Monty Python sketch.

Most of the interspersed clips of studio gear are from _at least_ a decade after this interview - the mixing boards/desks/consoles of that era were pretty simplistic, while the ones shown are from well into the '70s or later.

Honestly a lot of those looked even older. I wouldn’t say that most are from at least a decade later. There were loads of tape machines that looked like classic 40s and 50s ones. Looked like the ones Delia Derbyshire worked with.

It is factual. Keith Altham visited the Kinks in the studio in 1966 and wrote this article for the New Musical Express about his visit. Dave could indeed play the sax. According to Dave himself, tenor sax was the first instrument he took up.

This was right after the Beatles last tour in August ‘66 and they took two months off, which doesn’t seem like anything now, but at the time there was much speculation that they were breaking up. Of course now we know they were starting to work on Sgt. Pepper.

I remember when Quaife left for good in '69 . The band were never the same again and pooled all their recources in cracking the U.S. , never mind how mediocre their output had to become. So much for Ray at "hating this business". Besides their early 60's albums ,all you need of the Kinks is a "Greatest (60s) Hits" compilation including singles' B-sides.
