Ray Davies is one of the greatest front men who ever took the stage. I've seen the Kinks and Bob Dylan live at different times. Bob doesn't hold a candle to Ray when it comes to working the crowd into an absolute frenzy. Dylan just stands there -- the crowd didn't get into him.

then again, while being a fantastic songwriter, dylan really isnt a good Benchmark for a frontman. try Ian Anderson or Phil Collins instead. but yes, ray mastered the craft

'He thinks he is a flower to be looked at and, when he pulls his frilly nylon panties right up tight, he feels a dedicated follower of fashion.' It always amuses me that a lot of people think that their 1970 song 'Lola' was the first time they referenced transvestism. Oh, no, it wasn't!!

@fenderstratguy You're not being clear. The fact he's playing to 50,000 speaks volumes. He's not 'angry Bob' anymore, he goes out and plays a vast catalogue of songs, usually different arrangements each night. I love these two fine songwriters in equal measure. The Kinks got ridiculously banned from touring the US around 1965, so Ray changed musical direction and retreated into the old England of his youth (Village Green PS) and the London scene of the late 60s ( a fine example being this).

Jesus wept, this was out in the 60s not 1973 >:( Wish people uploading would get the years right. Not even one year out but almost a whole decade
@KateJayR5 жыл бұрын
The thing is though @Michele Alba, they should say that when uploading it to KZfaq e.g. live performance from 1973. Otherwise people not in the know think the year is when it was first released. This happens a lot in KZfaq uploads i.e. uploading songs with the wrong year attached.
@KateJayR5 жыл бұрын
@Michele I'm glad you decided to delete your other message but it came through my email anyway. Some of us just think it's important to have the correct year for the song. I am unashamedly nerdy about it. Most people just look at the song and the year at the top so yes, if the year is inaccurate, explain it was from a live performance. In this instance, it then would have been correct. But too many people upload songs with the wrong year attached and it's highly annoying
@kopthelotklopp15235 жыл бұрын
@@KateJayR I for one didn't assume that 1973 was the realease date. I knew it was the year of the performance. If Paul McCartney sang Get Back at a performance today I wouldn't expect the KZfaq video that followed to say '1968'.
@KateJayR5 жыл бұрын
@@kopthelotklopp1523 I wouldn't assume that at all and neither do many people who are sharing such links on other sites. People share these links on Facebook all the time and the information says The Kinks - Dedicated Follower of Fashion, 1973. This is all most people will see - the title/ headline.
@kopthelotklopp15235 жыл бұрын
@@KateJayR this video is precisely what it says in the title. The Kinks performing dedicated follower of fashion in 1973. If people want to assume that means the song was written in that year then that's their problem. IMO.

And I might say, Dylan is very incoherent too. Most of his lyrics are nonsense "Don't wear sandals, cause the Vandals took the handles." Gee, how deep can you get. (That's what I thought when I was 14) Hollies Brown, Oh gosh , it takes the cake!

@Dukegrievousangel Lyrics are only part of the song. Comparing the Beatles and the Kinks is apples and oranges. Different messages; Ray Davies was more in tune with the day to day absurdities in life, while the Beatles, in particular George, invoked awareness of a much bigger picture. And the Kinks couldn't come close to the melodies the Beatles created.
@syddavies25307 жыл бұрын
You're obviously a bigger Beatles fan and entitled to your opinion. But it is only that, an opinion.
@Shellback4114 жыл бұрын
@fenderstratguy OK so it's 100x better, but it's a Dylan song...so? Dylan's songs have been covered by innumerable bands and have also given longevity to certain bands careers, The Byrds, Manfred Man to name some. He was and remains arguably the most influential songwriter of the last 50 years. You may say his voice is fucked...maybe but he's 70 years old, but more importantly, like many of the old blues singers that influenced Bob himself, it's got shitloads of soul. Take it easy fella :-)
