This is not just a song - it’s a work of art.

As a Londoner, I've been to Waterloo station many times. It really adds to the appreciation of a song when you can vividly picture the location in which the lyrical story takes place.

Nick, putting the music you listen to, to one side you deserve huge, huge credit for your thoughtful & genuine reactions, you actually have something to say of note. So many other reactors could learn a thing or two from you. keep them coming.

It sure is a beautiful song - great break down and reaction. It’s the one song that’s always in my head whenever I take the two hour train journey from my home on the south coast, up to London and arrive into Waterloo Station.❤

Ray was knighted a few years ago-pretty impressive!! While other groups go up, then down, the Kinks have held steady for over 40 years. 👍🎸😎

Such a great song. I did the dorkiest thing back in the day... I was in London when iPods first came out... I took the underground to Waterloo Station and walked around listening to this song. "But I don't feel afraid As long as I gaze on Waterloo sunset I am in paradise"

For something 20 odd years after this one, `Living on a thin Line’, a Dave Davies masterpiece. Shows another side of the Kinks.

As always, a great reaction, Nick! Occasionally there will be one of those list of "Greatest British Songs" or suchlike in the press or a TV programme or whatever and this song is always, always in the top five (and rightfully so). I tend to think there's some lineage between this track and Blur's "The Universal". Rightly or wrongly, for me, it was Damon's "Waterloo Sunset"

Truly one of the most beautiful songs ever written. It belongs on the top shelf with others like "God Only Knows"... Another Kinks' song I would put on this level would be "Days"... glorious. Another great 60s and beyond band: Simon & Garfunkel... Paul Simon is one of the truly great songwriters... and his early work was amazing in beauty, lyrical content and emotional resonance. There's so many hits (all worthy) but also check out "Poem On The Underground Wall," "A Simple Desultory Philippic" "Patterns" ... and so many more. Cheers!

Greatest pop song ever written. Even McCartney went up to Dave Davies in a bar upon it's release and said ''I should have written that" and Dave replied " Yeah, but you didn't."

Backing vocals also include an uncredited Rasa Davies (Ray's first wife), who was in all those early songs, notably in Sunny Afternoon and Death of a Clown... Late bassist Peter Quaife lived in Belleville, Ontario for a number of years...Ray's ode to his other sister Rene can be heard in Come Dancing.

You really need to listen to them more. Village Green Preservation Society and Muswell Hillbillies is one of the best album sequences. They influenced pretty much everyone. Phenomenal Cat would make a good reaction video. I'm subscribing to see some more kinks videos.

Other musicians have called this song the unofficial national anthem. Andy Partridge of XTC has said Ray Davies is a better songwriter than Lennon & McCartney, his music can move the listener. The Kinks got screwed over when they weren't allowed to tour the US at the height of the British Invasion which is why they aren't as well known as they ought to be. Definitely do a deep dive of their early hit singles and their albums from the mid '60s to the mid '70s. You won't regret it. They didn't follow trends or have a slick producer.

Other beautiful Kinks songs - Days, Celluloid Heroes, Sitting in my Hotel, Animal Farm, Autumn Almanac, Shangri-la, A Rock and Roll Fantasy, Face in the Crowd, This Time Tomorrow, Get Back in Line, Misfits. Harder rocking songs include End of the Day, I Need You, I'm Not Like Everybody Else, 20th Century Man. Check out on YT - 'Waterloo Sunset-bowie, geldof, weller'

This song is #14 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 most beautiful songs of all time. Of course such lists are very questionable but to get that high in the rankings must mean a lot of people think it's pretty good. It reached #2 in the UK but failed to move the Beatles All You Need is Love out of the top spot.

Nick, Can you do me a favor? Can you at some stage in the future listen to “Boy Child” by Scott Walker? It’s right up your street. His first 5 solo albums from ‘67 to ‘70 are wonderful. “Boy Child” is from the album Scott 4 and I can’t recommend it highly enough. You will like him. All the best to you.

I’m always torn between Waterloo Sunset and Village Green Preservation Society. I love how Ray Davies wrote lyrics about his views on English day to day in that time. Values and etiquette. The good the bad and the queen. While other bands went on about their drug dealers or trippy Dylan/Beatles word puzzles and hippie love banality. Ray came from a completely different POV and I respect him for that. Don’t know why, but I think of another song that came out a few years later that I also see as a timeless classic. Rod Stewart and “Maggie May”. It’s a good one if you haven’t reacted. I think because I hold the Small Faces and Kinks in the same part of my heart. Rod joined them when they morphed into The Faces “Ooh La La” omg…a classic. And as The Small Faces, “Itchycoo Park” or “Tin Soldier” are great entry level tracks to a fantastic band like the Kinks. Cheers, boo.
