Probably the only straw hats that know about Kong's existence are Brook and Jinbe. Brook because when he was still not dead and a member of the Rumbar Pirates, Kong was very active as a marine and so very known by the public, so it's likely that the Rumbar Pirates had heard stories about Kong. And Jinbe because Kong was the fleet admiral during the days of Fisher Tiger and then years later Jinbe became a warlord technically working under Kong's direct command. Maybe Robin knows about him too

There’s also a reference to him in the live action that’s interesting! The map in the end credits says (not verbatim, off of memory) “made by the order of commander and chief Kong”. Which seemingly implies that he has some sort of overarching logistical responsibility for the world government. Obviously this is the live action, and in no way confirms anything canonically, but I just thought it was interesting given he’s a character we know so little about.

I was genuinely shocked he didn’t appear at any point during the Reverie or the Egghead Reverie flashback tbh. It seems odd to me that such a presumably still powerful individual in the segments solely dedicated to politics didn’t get any time to shine there. Realistically I also find it weird we never get a scene between him and Sakazuki as I imagine they’d definitely clash on how things are handled. I wouldn’t say he’s necessarily a failure in world building but I would say he’s certainly had chances of showing up organically that weren’t taken. Personally I hope that there is a plan for the character since conceptually Kong is really interesting. He even could give us some insight into the days of characters like Kureha or Brook’s first life.

I quite liked how in the Netflix adaptation of one piece all the official map of the seas and island have “created for the marines of east blue by order of commander-and-chief Kong” in the top corner. Makes them seem official and him seem super important

If Kong is supposed to draw inspiration from Sun Wukong, I feel that it is only fitting that he has climbed the ranks of the Marines, defeated countless pirates, and is now living amongst the World Nobles, which loosely mirrors the Monkey King’s efforts to achieve godhood.

Bogard's Marine rank remains unknown and I hope Oda reveals it on the SBS.

So what do we think was Kong's codename? I've long thought Sengoku’s admiral codename was White Goat or Shiroyagi. If you look at the jacket cuffs of all the admirals, they have cuffs the same color as the color in their codename. Aokiji’s cuffs were blue, Akainu’s cuffs were red, Kizaru’s cuffs were yellow, etc. When he is promoted to fleet admiral, Sakazuki is still seen wearing the coat with the red cuffs. This establishes that an admiral doesn’t necessarily get a new coat when promoted. Sengoku wears a coat with white cuffs, not the maroon that lower-ranked officers wear. He also has that pet goat.

It is interesting to think about the world pre-Roger. We know piracy kind of existed but it feels like a lot of places were either directly changed by the influx of pirates or became reliant on pirates for their economy.

Kong is a weird anomaly among characters in One Piece. Not only was he a former Fleet Admiral, he's now the Commander-in-Chief of the World Government's entire military. Not to mention he's bound to be powerful, since he used to be a Fleet Admiral, who is at least an equal to the Admirals (plus those massive muscly arms have to mean something). And yet, for the vast majority of the story he's done next to nothing in the actual story, which honestly kind of makes sense; if the Fleet Admiral is basically tied to a desk to the point where they can't actually do any field work, that must also apply for the Commander-in-Chief. Still, it must be pretty easy for people to forget he's even there for the most part, which is a shame, I'd honestly like to know more about him (and how his forearms are somehow bigger than his head).

I still believe Kong's full name is Monkey D. Kong and he's Garp's dad for so long we know very little of him and his accomplishments in battle and I think it's for a reason

I think Kong had a fruit. Pretty much every person that served/serves as an Admiral that we know of has a Devil Fruit. As for what his fruit is, I’d wager the Mythical Zoan Monkey Monkey Fruit; Model: Son Goku. This would have been the trend with Admirals back then, to have Mythical Zoan fruits, just as the trend nowadays is Logia. The WG probably takes the fruits of deceased Admirals, and uses them on a rotation basis.

My head canon is that the monkey family line is supposed to serve in the marines in some capacity as some sort of 800 year long punishment / settlement with the celestial dragons for losing in the war. All members of the family line are genetically superior to average people and clearly lineage factor / family plays a big role in one piece.

You missed an important thing here. 6:06, He is mentioning that they led during Garp and Rogers time, because it is something that admirals do on the feild. Fleet Admirals DO NOT leave the office. Hence what happened when sengoku was on the fleet admiral position and currently with Akainu. The fleet admiral stays at the main base. In this case Marineford. It's not because they were LEAGUES above him or anything like that, just that they were the ones actively on the field literally leading the navy when they were away from base.
