The famous Lachrimae Pavan performed here on the instrument for which it was written, the Renaissance Lute. First published around 1595 in England. Here I'm playing from the Jane Pickering manuscript but have added some nice ideas from other English manuscripts. Composer: John Dowland (1563-1626).

@@K-Viz Its so much sweeter of a sound than a guitar, in my mind. Lutes should have a revival. Banjos are also popular these days, but they sound twangier and harsher than a lute. So much music today is so loud and about making noise.

@Veronica_needssleep
@Veronica_needssleep 3 жыл бұрын
Well, you don’t have to quit your job or anything. Just get the instrument you can afford (did you hear the guitar version? you can get a guitar for almost nothing these days) and put in the time you can spare. Sure, to become a professional you need to spend endless hours, but you can enjoy playing music from a very basic level. The start may be frustrating, but let me tell you a secret: the frustration stays, you will always want to be better. But the joy is there from the beginning and it also stays, especially once you start playing with other people.
@scurryfudge
@scurryfudge 3 жыл бұрын
@@Veronica_needssleep Well, thanks for taking my comment way too seriously by not getting the humour behind it and also telling a really old "secret", I guess. I just wanted to celebrate Brandon's performance. Nothing more. Nothing less. I'm a musician myself but not at all familiar with playing the lute, which is quite a delicate instrument to learn and let alone master. That's all. If I started to learn another instrument besides working, there would be zero progress in that (given the time I want to spend on my other instruments, too). It's nothing new that to become a real professional in whatever there is you need to really focus on that (better still, from as early as possible) which I just can't, because I don't have 72 hours a day - also a life, obligations and bills to pay (besides, I guess a lot of other people also can't do that just because, like me, they lack confidence in their skill or they, just never had the opportunity to earn their living with music (which is hard enough - even for the masters - these days). Some people have this lucky opportunity, some don't. And my heart is full of joy for those who can not just play but live through music. But yes, I do agree that the joy of playing music always overshadows the frustration. Just like enjoying others play. (But I personally don't enjoy commenting strangers commenting comments by other strangers they don't even know.)

Beautiful piece, beautifully played. I have an 8-course renaissance lute at home, but unfortunately never got really proficient with it. I would like to learn the instrument - I know about Sarge Gerbode's lute page, so it's not for a lack of material, but rather a lack of direction. Brandon, could you maybe suggest a progression of pieces to learn that could be taken up by a beginner on the instrument, and maybe allow a path to a more intermediate level?

I also play the 8-course Renaissance lute (alas, the level is not where I want it to be...) but if you want to get better I think that Pascale Boquet's method (in French, but not really a problem as it's more a progression of pieces than an in-depth method) Méthode de Luth Renaissance, by Pascale Boquet. Paris, 1985. 224 pages. Price : 30 € / 35 € (FR + 5 €) (EU + 9 €) - you can get that at the Societé francaise de luth here www.sf-luth.org/eng/?Musical_Publications/Le_Secret_des_Muses

Er, ditto, from first to last word! I also have an 8-course renaissance lute, albeit mine is currently and to my shame sitting in the roof for someone to play it.
