Another comedy of mistaken identity with Gordon Harker as a recently released ex-convict who goes on the trail of an emerald necklace, but is mistaken for a detective. This film (like The Private Secretary) was produced by Julius Hagen at Twickenham Studios in the UK in 1935 and has been unseen since this showing on BBC2 nearly 30 years ago. The film has never been released for purchase on any format and it may now be an orphan work under the meaning of UK copyright law.

It is really interesting sometimes to look at the life stories of these actors. Here are something I found out about some of this cast... Gordon Harker The chacter of John Harker in Dracular was based on his father Jane Carr was one of the first faces to be broadcast by the BBC. Her husband was a partner in Logie Baird Company Michael Shepley was also a reknown cricketeer Geraldine Fitzgerald Out-lived them all. She died in 2005 aged 91 Sebastian Shaw Was Luke Skywalker's father in the Return of the Jedi

Geraldine Fitzgerald was also in an acclaimed NY production of "Long Day's Journey Into Night" with Robert Ryan. It was recorded by Caedmon LP's.

What a delightful movie! Tommy "The Lad" (Gordon Harker♥︎) gets mistaken for a detective, and for one day's "work" gets paid enough to start a whole new life, as long as he doesn't give away anyone's secrets! AND he finds the love of his life after so many years! How could you not love this character? Thanks eh44 for posting this movie! This really cheered me up! 😃- M.

What a delight! A lovely complicated and surprisingly saucy plot, some excellent gags, and the amazing talent of Gordon Harker with his hilarious faux posh act. If he had been borne a generation later, he might have been a major sitcom or Ealing comedy star, but he seems largely forgotten now. And Jimmy (Sebastian Shaw) was of course Darth Vader after they took off his helmet!!

Thank you, you never disappoint with your offerings. I could not stop from beginning to the end. I've read others thought this a bore with too much dialog, but I know what I like and I like this.

I'm sure the continuity announcer at the start of the film introduces Gordon Harker as George Harker. Whatever, it was an excellent movie short with the always dependable Gordon - or is it George???

edgar wallace the famous writer wrotetheplay this was based on .he was great friends and adored gordon harker who played in the stage version .wallace in collaberation with gordon changed a lot of lines and added scenes to show off gordons cockney wit and mannerisms . gordon when they met wallace said was his vision come to life of his racing tipster character educated evans who spouts garbled history in a posh voice hence his name .wallace intended a series of his evans stories starring gordon .alas he died un hollywood unexpectedly in 1931 when weiting king kong .a film was made but gordon was under contract to another studio so the role went to comic max miller .he was exceptionally good they say but sadly the movie is now one of the great lost films.

Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window ? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..." Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!" Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky." Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction." Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment ?
